Take any twenty cards and Shuffle them. Lay them out on a table, two at a time, until you have ten pairs of cards. Now ask someone to select any one of the pairs, fixing the two "cards i n h i s mind. He does not tell you which pair he has selected. After he has made his choice, gather up the cards, pair by pair, into a single pack and place it face doym in your left hand: Be careful not to separate any of the pairs. The trick is, of course, to identify the two selected cards. Imagine that on the table there is this arrangement of words: . • BIBLE ATLAS GOOSE THIGH Note that there are ten pairs of letters altogether: 2 B*s, 2 Ts, 2 L's, 2 E's, etc. Begin turning up the 20 cards, one by one. Use the first card to cover the space where the first B would be, the second card to cover the second B of Bible. The third card should cover the I of Bible, and the fourth card the I of Thigh. The fifth card then covers the L of BIBLE, so that the sixth card must also cover an L which is in ATLAS. Continue turning up the remainder of the 20 cards in like fashion, always 'covering a pair-of letteih. Now have your subjqct point out the horizontal rows in which the two cards are that he originally selected. If he indicates that his two eards are in the first row you know that they must be the two B'9 (or the Ace of Clubs and 2 of Diamonds as in the illustration). If he indicates tbe third artd fourth row you-remember that G is the only letter repeated in Goose and Thigh; so you point to the first card in the third row and the fourth card In the fourth row. After • little practice it's very simple. One of the beauties of this trick is that it can be worked on a number of people simultaneously. Each of them selects his own pair mentally and then indicates the rows when you are through laying out your word pattern. The only dlificult part of the trick is memorizing the key words. Try out the trick several times on yourself before working it on an audience so that you are sure of correct procedure. If you enjoy card tricks, a copy of "Take a Card" which contains this and nine other tricks fully described and diagrammed may be obtained by sending ten cents to cover mailing and handling to Dept.
