But Solitaire is being pushed for popularity by a relative newcomer, Canasta, which blossoms out with a new variation nearly every day. Six of the more popular Canaita variations (Samba, Chile, Vrugvpijr. Bolivia, Italian Canasta, Cut-ThrtiSit Canasta) have been put together In a booklet, called "Some Variations of Canasta." ROLE OF HOSPITALS INCREASING. SAYS RESEARCH GROUP Almost three times as many Americans are admitted to hospitals now as were twenty years ago, with each hospital bed in the Uhited States serving an average of thirteen patients every year. Health Information Foundation has reported. In the October issue of its monthly statistical bulletin, Progress in Health Services, the Foundation traces the growth of American hospitals and reports that, the rate of admission to all types of hospitals has more than doubled since 1935. Twenty years ago, six but of every 100 Americans were hospitalized for varying periods during the course of a year. Today, the rate is 13 per 100. Tne bulletin Cites the American Hospital association as its chief source of such 'data. How have American hospitals managed to keep up with such increased utilization? While the construction of new hospitals and additions to existing units have greatly increased the number of available beds, these additions have barely kept pace with population increases, the bulletin reports. However, hospitals have been able to handle the greatly-increased number of patients because such medical advances as Improved surgical procedures and new drugs have decreased the average length of stay in a hospital. The problem of providing adequate hospital are in the U.S. is resolved partly through a basic division of responsibility, according to Progress in Health Services. Federal and state governments, for example, have assumed the major role in the care of such longterm diseases as tuberculosis and mental illness, whereas voluntary hospitals, which number about 50 nercent of the present total of 6,956 U.S. hospitals, provide the general care needed for shortterm illnesses, surgery, maternity and emergency cases. Of the 21 million Americans hos pitalized during 1955, the Founda tion reports, 95 percent were admitted to general hospitals; approximately 2 percent were admitted to mental and psychiatric institutions and the remaining 3 percent entered other specialized treatment and care centers.
