Sunday, Dec. 9, the Stewarts extend an invitation <o their many friends and neighbors to call on them at home. They will have open house from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7. tp 9 p.m. Junior Red Cross The Junior Red Cross drive is. on now. Mrs. Edwin Witt- " ttidyer is in charge of the drive. All school children are invited to contribute to help the Red Cross in time of need. Mrs. Wittmayer has explained the program to both St Joseph's and Richmond gfade schools. This week she will be at the high school. Last year, St. Joseph's school children had a 100 per cent record for giving to the Junior Red Cross. Richmond grade school had a record of giving in the high 90 percent. Sunday evening the Senior Youth Fellowship group will meet at Grace church to hear Dr. Hans Jaeger speak. Dr. and Mrs. Ja»;- ger will be the guests of the Senior Youth Fellowship group frtr the evening. Shooting Accident Saturday there was a hunting accident near Richinond. The sirens blew and the rescue squad rushed °ut and back into town again. A young man fiom Chifcago was shot in the leg by a gun that went offl^ccidentally. Basketball The basketball season i* in full swing once again. On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the Richmond team lost two games to Walworth. On Wednesday they lost two to Antioch. The grade school team played Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Walworth and lost also. The season is still young and perhaps tlv? teams will do better in the future. Here and There The Kruses spent Friday Chicago. The Vernon Harrises went Chicago Thanksgiving day and spent a few days there, returning home Saturday. The H. Carlsons spent Thanksgiving day in Chicago with Pastor Carlson's sister and family. Sunday dinner guests at the Carlsons' were Mr. and Mrs. 'H Shaw of Chicago, Mrs. Carlson's parents and Mr. and Mrs. E. N. James and family of DeKalb, Mrs. Carlson's sister,' brother-inlaw and family. CARPENTIER S e c r e t a r y of S t a t e Mechanical advances have naturally done much in recent years to add to the safety as well as the comfort of late model automobiles. One safety device added to the newer cars is the automatic turn signal. The importance of this mechanical aid is well known. Before the advent of the automatic turn signal many motorists neglected to give a hand signal before turning their vehicles. With some of these drivers it was sheer carelessness, while others neglected to give the proper hand signal if the weather was inclement. The driver of" a vehicle equipped with the automatic devises has no excuse for not giving the proper signal flfhen turning. ILLINOIS FIRST TO.; . CONVERT LICENSING TO ELECTRONIC Alt) Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier has announced that plans have been completed ff>f the installation of electronic machines in the ^ Driver License department to process the information on all license applications, driver control records and to issue driver licenses. In calling attention to the electronic development, Secretary Carpentier said, '^Illinois will be the first state in the nation to convert its driver licensing operation to the modern methods utilized by large industry." Secretary Carpentier explained that the electronic machines, utilize punch cards on which all of the desired information is recorded by various symbols. The information contained on the punch card is then fed into a magnetic drum data processing machine. The machine can scan thousands of application records m a few seconds and can be adjusted tcgive specific information relative to large groups of drivers. Part of the equipment includes a magnetic {tape recording unit on which aproximately 60,000 complete driver license registration records can be recorded on *i single 2400 foot reel of magnetic tape. This machine not only re-» cords the information on the tape but will also check it for accuracy. It is capable of reading tape at- a speed of' 900,000 digits per minute. Included in the system is a data selector which will enable the Driver License department to refer to the information stored on the magnetic tapes, select the information desired and feed it into another machine which will automatically tabulate the results and print them on any desired type of form. Secretary Carpentier also pointed out that more than 4,000,000 Illinois driver licenses will begin to expire in May, 1957. Su6h expirations will extend over a period of three years. Along with the electronic system, Secretary Carpentier said, Illinois will fdso introduce a permanent driver license number which will establish a single master file for all drivers. This permanent driver license number will eliminate the possibility of any. person obtaining more than one driver license.
