"AJUWe celebrated our birthday one night last week and' who should come to our door but our deai friend, John Dreymiller. He presented us with a cigar box that contained some of pur favorite brand. The rest of the box contained evenly cylLstrandi of rope. ri:. But, you should have seen the card! From the signatures on the card, we are indebted to Frank Kempfer, "Muggs" and "The Girls." It was a sweet thought. And, brother, you can't 'find a card like that one every day! , Glad to hear that our town? basketball teams got off to a good start with victories in their opener. An invitation to attend the horse show at ihe International Livestock Show was too good to pass up, so the game had to be missed. Being an old cowhand and pony rider in our younger days, we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of that horse show. TOWN TEAMS IN TWIN TRIUMPHS OVER RICHMOND Kenosha Sporis To Appear Here Next Sunday Evening McHenry's new town teams, sponsored by the local American Legion Post, stepped off to a flying start Sunday night in tie MCHS gym with a twin victory over Richmond. The firSt team came through With a thrilling 54 rto 51 victory, showing good team balance in scoring, floor work and rebounding. The Richmond team out scored McHenry in the last quar ter' to narrow down the 41-34 lead held after three quarters of play. . Chuck Hiller, after scoring 20 points for the second squad, came back to spark the first team with 9 points in the fourth period. In the preliminary game, the home team romped to a 37 to 15 win as Richmond failed to show a scoring punch. With limited practice, this newly organized^ group showed real promise of developing into a high-scoring aggregation as the season rolls along. Coach Thomas has now had the chance of' §eeing players in competition and son a success. The football banquet, Monday night, sponsored by Kiwanis clubs, was well attended and enjoyed by all. Coach Jack Pheanis, a credit to any school, was. very happy and very gracious in crediting players, coaches on his: can arrange his lineups accordstaff and all who made" the sea- | ingly. Next Sunday evening the Kenosha Sports will appear on the local floor bringing a good record of performances in their area. The players were pleased with the following of fans at the opening game and will strive to merit support in the way of large crowds each game. Mel Stuessy and Chuck Cuda officiated the games in good style and it is hoped they will be available for future games. The toastmastering by Rev Maxwell was real good and the speaker, Tim Lowry, packed a punch in every line. Lowry must be a great speaker 'cause every body thought his speech was too short. Our high schpbl varsity basketball team has' won three in i row from non-conference teams and appear to be off to a good start for the opening of North Suburban play starting this week On Friday night McHenry travels to Woodstock and we expect to see a large crowd travel with the team. Tony Roskie, Woodstock coach, attended the game here Tuesday night. When we told him it wis an honor to have him scout the Warriors, Tony was quick to explain that he was on another mission. You can be sure he gave our team a good look. . Talk got around to officiating and we recalled that Tony never failed to explain a foul or mistake ,to a boy who tried to make thi ref look bad. Tony went beyond the call of duty and the whistle toot to help the boys and lol them with a smile. Wally Schimke was chosen Ali- Conference tackle, Chuck Olson at center and Phil Schneider at one of the half back posts. Tom IvIcMahon was picked as second team guard and Mark Zimmerman at tackle. Both teams were ice cold on shots for the first two minutes, but finally found the way to a 10-7 McHenry lead at the quarter. Hie Warriors did some substituting in the second quarter nnd wound up with a 26-19 half time lead. Back came the starting lineup in the second half and plays were clicking to beat the band. Players were feeding off to men in better positions to shoot ar.d plays around Jim Justen in tiie pivot were v/orking fine. It was McHenry 48 and Wauconda 31 going into the stretch. That last quarter saw Wauconda in a never-say-die mood that made the game exciting^ The Warriors missed a flock of shots and had to get serious about controlling the ball as the visitors closed in to lead the scoring 17 to 12 in the period. This was a game in which the home team looked sharp at times and ragged in other moments. They brought the ball in for shots, but missed too many layups. All agreed that this was a good time to get those mistakes out of their systems. Matt Eichinger was the leading point man with 7 baskets and 4 free throws. 9 DAILY PINUPS: Every today was once a tomorrow. Time is to ase, but no one can borrow. Coach Chuck Cuda came up with a scoring balance through his line-up that speaks well for future development. Led by Hester's 3 for 3, the McHenry boys made 10 out of 16 free throw tries. McHenry J.V. (52) Pheasant and rabbit hunters had a good time the early part of the week. The little snow we had helped a great deal and quite a bit of tracking was done. While checking our traps Thanksgiving Day we heard the Ranking of geese. We lodged up and saw about 300 Canadian honkers above us. They were not hiore than 80 yards up and were bucking the wind. They seemed to be barely moving. We had crouched down in some tall weeds to set a trap and the geese didn't even see us. The happy ending to the story is that being in. a hurry that particular morning, we had not taken our shotguns. One should always try to be prepared for the unexpected. Jack McCarroli and Ray Rode just returned^ from hunting* in Southern XUig&s. • They say the rabbit population tnere is quite different from this part of the state. Instead of kickine up one rabbit a time, you kick up groups of vljiree or four at a time. That really must be some fun. We sTiould have it so good here. MCHS Varsity On the eve of Thanksgiving in the year of '56 the McHenry Warriors, Varsity and Ffosh-Soph, won a cpuple 6f basketball games that gave a gym-packed crowd jumpy hearts. The games were played in McHenry, non-conference battles with teams ably representing Grant Township High School. The tune-up for final Anxious moments of the evening came vfith a 30-28 Frosh-Soph victory for the Cuda boys. This game saw two heavy scoring boys. Cajthamel dropped through 23 points for McHenry while Rasmussen hit for a total of 19. Varsity Game . In the varsity game there was early indication of a real tussle. The score was tied at 16-all at the end of one quarter. The second period saw Grant move ahead when their two big fellows controlled rebounds. The Warriors were handicapped at this point when it behooved Coach Fulton to withdraw Jim Huemann with three fouls. Then it was Jim Austen who had to sit out. The Warriors moved ahead by one point in the third quarter, outscoring Grant 21 to 15. Huemann was back in the line-up. Tom Mc- Mahon went on a 10-ROint scoring spree and Denny Conway caught five. The last quarter found McHenry moving ahead 60 to 52 and Cliff Fulton leaned back, apparently relaxed with thoughts of turkey on the 'morrow. One minute and 55 seconds remained. Then came four quick points for Grant and a tiifieout for McHenry. Oh, well! Let's just think of the final score. Jim Justen, normally a good man at the freethrow line, made only one out of six tries, but that was a big one in the final scramble. Cpnway had another big one in the last aitch fight and Huemann scored tour straight to give him a record of 10 out of 12 tries for the game.
