No matter who wins the nomination for each party, the voting public will soon know practically everything about the candidate including his card playing preferences. Many Bridge fans will probably be delighted if President Eisenhower ^decides to seek another term in the White House. Ike's love for Bridge, which traces all the way back. to his cadet days at West Point, has probably done more to stimulate interest in the game than any other recent event since Contract Bridge was invented in 1925. But Mr. Eisenhower is not eloiMt in his Presidential penchant for relaxing over a friendly card game*. Actually, Presidential interest in card playing traces all the way back to George Washington who kept a detailed record of card, games won and lost and even of the cost of new cards. What Eisenhower has been t# Bridge, Harry Truman was to Poleer. On long presidential trips, Truman often played Poker with news correspondents and members of his staff. On the other hand, his predecessor, Franklin D. Roosevelt, whiled away many hours in relaxation over a -two-deck Solitaire. game called Spider. FDR always laughed off all- questions asking U he eve^ won. Herbert HoOver played Gin Rummy iri the White House and, at eighty still finds pleasure in this and other popular card games. Averell Harriman, New York Governor and faivorite son, is known as an avid Poker player but so far his fellow- Democratic aspirants, Kefauver and Stevenson, haven't revealed their favorite card games, if nny. In the days ahe»'J . it will be interesting--to the c... players at least--to see what card games their favorite sons favor.
