'AO- 9tecRfl Skating party-- Mrs. Qepulis, operator' of Mc- Henry's Just For Fun Roller Rink, tells us the McHenry Dance and Figure Skating Club is sponsoring a Valentine party February 14 between the hours of 7:30 and 10:30 p.m. These young people are clever ' and graceful on skates. We can tell you this, but the young folks would love to have you go to see them perform. We have talked to some of them and find them almost pleading for you to take a little time to watch their progress and accomplishments. ~ A special delivery mailman will be. on hand to deliver valentines throughout the evening. Funds from the party will be used to send skaters to the nation* al meet. . The young folks report, that many new members from our McHenry area have joined their club and are doing real well with their lessons. -- "And please ask the Moms i and Dads to give us their support. We think we are doing things they want young people to do." Nuff said. POOR LITTLE ROBIN-- Betty O'Brien saw one lonely little robin in her yard Monday, January 21. Please .try to tide him over with a few bread crumbs, Betty, until our cherries are ripe. Epitaph on tombstone of the hypoch'ondriac: "I Told You I Was Sick." WARRIORS WING WOODSTOCK WITH 62-52 WALLOe Excitement Makes Gvfm Rafters Ring Through Fast Game A noisy,, official-baiting crowd whooped and hollered through an action - packed basketball game here last Friday night as the McHenry Varsity defeated the Blue Streaks of Woodstock 62 to 52. Woodstock went into a 4-0 lead before a revised McHenry lineup adjusted itself to run up a 13-4 lead. The game went into race horse speed at this point and Woodstock closed the gap to 13-10. Woodstock's plan to get the ball into the hands of towering Tom Mer\vin were upset by the Warriors' press. Then when the rebound situation looked bad for the home boys, Coach Fulton sent Ed Caron in to strengthen the play under the nets. t McHenry led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and each team had scored only one point from the free throw line. Huemann started to click in the second quarter and Denny Conway came into the game to score two baskets and a free throw. The half ended with McHenry holding a 36 to 27 lead. Everybody seemed to foul Curt Schacht in the "third quarter when he missed three free throws then made five out of six attempts. The Streaks outscored McHenry 15-14 in this quarter, picking up eleven points on free throws. Tom McMahon came through in great style to save the Warriors in the last quarter. Getting in close for shots and showing his best coordination of the season. Tom led the scoring with 15 points. When things begin to bother you, it must be time for a vacation. But, our newspaper has never fallen for the idea of sending a sports reporter to the sunny south to cover events and report on the climate. Fortunately most players show good sportsmanship and are only aroused when they absorb some of the goings-on in the crowd. Often times the losing crowd blames the referee for defeat. All of us have seen bad calls and have seen officials who are not tops. But, have any of us ever squawked when the call was on the other team? We dislike those patty-cake fouls, but most officials are calling them according to present day rules. We saw one deliberate foul by a visiting player this year that in our estimation would justify ex cusing the boy from the game to . reflect on how the game should be played--hard, but not with intent to cause serious injury. Perhaps we should not say intent because a boy is sometimes carried away in the excitement of the game. Registration will be from 10 o'clock until 1 o'clock. Warm food will be available and visitors are welcome to participate. If the temperature, is under 20 degrees the shoot will be cancelled. •;' - K i . 1 McHENRY CAGERS BEAT YOUNG STREAKS 39-33 HERE S Led by Mark Vycital's 19 points,1 McHenry's Frosh-Soph basketball team won a close 39-33 game from Woodstock in the preliminary game here Friday night. Leading fey only one point at half time, the home team pranced to a good lead in the third quarter by outscoring the young Streaks 16 to 4. Fox Lake was pretty good Sunday. The main catch has been mostly bluegills, with a few crappies mixed in. Lake Marie is still producing quite & few fish. Every once in a while a tip-up flag springs up and if the right methods are used a northern is caught. Some good sized northerns have been caught in Lake Marie this year. There hasn't been much activity on bluegills in Meyers Bay lately, but toward spring the action should be fast and furious ^ere. We heard from severalydifferent people "that sofme iQcky fisherman" caught a 5 pound trout in Lake Geneva last Saturday. This lunker is supposed to have been caught in the "narrows." Most of the trout fishermen use salmon eggs or wigglers. Minnows and other baits are also used. Perch fishing in Lake Geneva was also good last week-end. They seemed to hit ih streaks. Early in the morning wag pretty good, we were told. Some bluegills and northerns were caught in Lake Geneva Saturday. Neither kind ran very big, in fact the bluegills were very small. We have four farms lined up for the fox hunt. If anyone is interested, call McHenry 953. The hunt will take place the first Sunday the weather conditions are right. Call the number mentioned above and leave your phone number. You "will be-notified in plenty of time. ACREAGE RESERVE PROGRAM SIGN-UP BEGINS FEBRUARY 1 News As long as we can remember, there has been an unwritten law of conduct while a player is attempting to make a free throw. But, as we were saying, many a fellow needs a vacation when those things begin to bother. We can dream, can't we? Bob Conway tells us the Ameri- i can Legion Post is sponsoring ^a 1 party this (Thursday) evening to benefit the March of Dimes. All proceeds of the entire building will be turned over to the Polio Fund. Eveybody is welcome^ and urged to' attend. by Charlotte Houda On Feb. 2 and 3, there will be a mid-winter institute at Woodstock. Registration will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, with a small fee. There is a special price offered for attending both the meeting and dinner. Please bring a sack lunch for Saturday noon meal, or lunch can be obtained at local restaurants. Saturday night, there will be swimming, and all attending are asked to bring their own suits. Rumors say the banquet will . be quite interesting. Don't miss ; the fun. Charlotte Houda, reporter. Join the March of:0imes Bowling * m j|P|§ -- McHENRY RECREATION -- Business Men-- D. Friday, Feb. 8 Lake Forest at McHenry. It is a fact that the people of the nation, as a whole, have lost much of their former admiration for the professions as a whole. f ~~ Sign-up for the 1957 corn acreage reserve program will begin on Feb. 1st at the McHenry county ASC office, llOVfe E. Jackson street, Woodstock, Bert Bridges, chairman of the local ASC committee, has announced. Under the acreage reserve phase of the soil bank program, payment will be made to farmers for reducing the 195? corn acreage below the farm allotment. A specific acreage equal to the reduction from the allotment must be designated and set aside from production in 1957, Corn producers were recently advised of the per acre payment rate established for their farm under the acreage reserve program. \ Personnel will be available in the county office on Feb. 1 to fully explain details of the program or to assist farmers in signing agreements. The deadline for signing a corn acreage reserve agreement under the 1957 program is March 8. SHOP AT HOME At their Feb. 12 meeting, the county board is expected to be presented with petitions asking that the matter of T.B. patients' care be brought before the voters June 3. Following action taken at a meeting of the McHenry County Tuberculosis association, held last week, county voters will probably have another opportunity to vote on the proposition at the judicial election in June. Guest speaker at the association meeting was Ed. Grosse, assistant executive director of the Illinois. State Tuberculosis association. It will be remembered that the proposal was defeated in the county at the Nov. 6 election, this being the -only one of twenty-nine counties voting on the proposition in which it was defeated. For many years, tuberculosis care has been financed from thej general funds of McHenry couh-' ty, but recently it has been the opinion of the county board of supervisors that such care has been a heavy drain on the general funds. Thus, they expressed the belief that action should be taken to create a separate tax for such care. With this in mind, the proposal was brought before voters in the fall. It was the general opinion that the entire matter had been misunderstood, resulting in its defeat. There will be two ballots voted on in June, one approving the setting up of the levy and the other giving the county power for raising funds. The next meeting of the association will be held Friday ^evening, Feb. 8, at the court house annex for further planning. At present there are eighteen county residents; in the tuberculosis sanatorium and five of these were discovered during the recent x-ray survey by the state mobile unit. To date, $15,009.76 has been contributed to the Christmas seal sale fund and more money is still being accepted. YOUR INCOME TAX Most taxpayers who find that they are due refunds on federal income taxes withheld in the preceding year will make every effort to prepare and file returns as soon as the filing season starts, in hopes of an early check from Uncle Sam to reimburse the excess tax i*ayments. Between 40 and 50 percent of 2,706,000 taxpayers fall in this category annually, according to district director H. Alan Long of the Chicago office of the internal revenue service. Refunds last year to this sizeable group Of taxpayes totalled $141,000,000 and this'year's figures should be about the same, he estimates. "We're glad to receive returns," Mr. Long declared. But we'd also like to get some of that same cooperation from two other classes of taxpayers--those who owe nothing, and thfise who owe a few dollars. "We suggest that every taxpayer, and especially those who spent during 1956 large sums that might be deductible, compute his tax both ways, by taking the standard deduction and by itemizing deductions -- -ihen file in under the method which is to his advantage. The taxpayer who does that now, even if he finds he owes a few dollars, will be putting behind him a task which he must find easier to look back on thar. forward to.
