|^§f' >•• j S lill ISllK SltS •9IWnH,"i THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER An old schoolmate, Joe Buch, wrote a letter the past week with some serious thoughts pertaining to the Boy Scout wound up with some humorous recollections that we will follow up later. We see so much good in the following that it seems it should reach beyond those actively engaged in Scout work: :' k - -i; McHenry Scouters:| The announcement' in the McHenry Plaindealer relative /to the annual Boy Scout banquet reminds me of the happy days I spent as a Boy Scout in McHenry. I do not remember the exact date our troop was organized but 1 well remember Our summer camps and our contribution during World War I of spotting walnut trees, eradicating Japanese Barberry and assisting with the sale of Liberty Bonds. Scouting is mainly responsible for my vocation through life. I particularly liked signalling and easily mastered semaphore and continental codes. As a result I became interested in the development of radio and have been an active radio amateur since 1922. This led to employment in the electronic field which continues to be my vocation. My return to Scouting after a long absence was no accident. Throuj^f^the intervening years some impelling force seemed to remind me to fulfill an obligation to Scouting. I never forgot the Scout Law- Through many years of instability I know my course was directed along the right road because I remembered them. For the past ten years I have served as Scoutmaster of Troop 45 in Dallas. I earned my Scoutmaster Key and for the past few years have been co-chairman of the Scouter training committee. If possible, it would please me intensely if you would pay tribute to my Scoutmasters of thirtyriirie years ago during your annual banquet program. They were, Arthur (Babe) Hunter and Prof. A. E. Nye. I do not kndw the whereabouts of Babe but for good old Prof, it will have to be post-humous. 'Since I am familiar with the problems of a Scoutmaster, may I join your appeal for McHenry Citizens to actively participate in the support of^<^r:S'couting pro? gram. There is no reward so great as the respect of a boy: Yours in Scouting, Joe G. Buch 5234 Vickery Blvd. Dallas, Texas a birthday party and would you please gift wrap them for me." It took quite a bit of time to get the story and it took a bit more time to gift wrap, but Sam (always considerate) saw to it thatwhile much bigger girls .milled around to complete their purchases. It happened in McHenry! DAILY PINUPS: The more you sing, the less you'll sigh; the more you chirp, the less you'll cry; the more you dance, the less you'll groan; the more you grin the less you'll moan. Courtesies can't be borrowed so you must carry your own. The charm of a good deed depends largely on how it is done. -- McHenry Recreation -- Business Men-- Won Los$ 1. Tonyan Constr. Co. 57 27 2. Friday night as they shot their way to a rousing 80 to 64 victory over the visiting Lake Forest varsity. Perhaps the Warrior trick of stopping Tommy Wells without a point in the first quarter was the tip-off that victory was waiting just around three more corners. Wells has been the Lake Forest hot-shot, but was held far below his usual performance on this occasion. Matt Eichinger scored 8 of his 19 points in the first quarter as McHenry went into a 21 to 14 lead. Jim Huemann sank 5 baskets in the second quarter to lead the way to a 44 to 30 half time lead. Jim had 21 points for the game. Lake Forest came to life in the third quarter to play the Warriors on an even basis, but the 14- point cushion stood up for the final round when everybody helped in some way to come through with the fifth straight win for the team. Team play again won for the Warriors. Willingness to pass the ball around and feed the open man was in evidence. And players came off the bench to give the teatti,^ lift In spibts wh^T0Mich Furtoii saw a need. r . Ed Caron was the boy who brought the score to 80 as the crowd hollered for that mark. Caron was fouled with the score at 78 and no danger of losing. But, the crowd wanted 80~pdints. Ed got 'em! Most of us feel the Warriors can turn the victory trick. And don't sell those Frosh-Soph Warriors short, either. They have been brought along nicely. Looking through bowling scores this week, you will bump into a beautiful 656 series rolled by J. Cristy, Sr. And along the line you will see a 258 game that gave A1 Mullere a 600 series on the nose. That is when bowling is a pleasure. A drunk was last seen ambling up to a subway excavation in New York City. He leaned over the rail and shouted to the workmen: "Shay, how long-zit goona take to finish it?" "Two years, bud," someone yelled back up. "Two yearszh." the drunk cried. "Sh'too long. I'll take a cab." Take a look at the report on our high school wrestling team this week'. "Coach Jerome Kalk has done a routing job with the team and woufcjl like nothing better than to wrn the conference tournament at Crystal Lake this week. McHenry has room for some first place trophies. to be the best defense, a dogged defense played a big part in setting up this fifth straight win for i the fighting Warriors. McH. Zion-Benton's team fell to the Warriors last week and the next thoroughly beaten foe was Harrington. The last victory was a sweet one for the team and coach. These teams play only 7-minute quarters so one can see they packed a lot of punch in this game. Gdod' passing and ball' handling was1 shown by the team as they moved out in front in the third quarter then widened the lead in the final quarter when Lake Forest put on a hard press. Coach Cuda got a good balance of scoring from his .team, led by A1 Cajthaml's 22 points.
