We watched the Tigers beat the Shamrocks last Sunday in a .practice game that was properly billed. Of course, none of the boys have had a chance to get in enough practice, but some bright spots did loom up throughout the game. Lack of practice even showed up with Hank Hiller and yours truly in trying to keep score. Wc plan a training trip to the southland next year to get in shape. Tom Nolan, a big fellow, started on the mound for the Shamrocks and showed everything but control. If that comes later, Tom is going to be a real hurler. Si Meyer, who now rates as an old timer, came over to Watch Tom's stuff and agreed with us that his fast ball was really taking off. We were sorry to learn that an <1 old injury may keep Howie ' Freund out of the game this year. He always rated with the best in our book. * Howie Katz has also decided to hang up his spikes unless the old urge strikes him along the way. He was in the game all the way and will certainly be missed. The Shamrocks had a new third baseman named Salerno who looked like he has played ball before. . The game gave Managers Bob McCulla and Joe Frett a chance to look over prospects and get ready for the opening next .Sunday. Hebron comes to McHenry-next Sunday for the first league game. Johnsburg travels to Elgin to meet the VFW entry. Coach McCracken is bringing his varsity baseball team along in good shape at MCHS with recent wins over Crystal Lake (6-1), Woodstock (4-1) and Warren (5- 1). The Johnsburg Tigers motored down to McHenry last Sunday afternoon and defeated the McHenry Shamrock baseball team by a 12 to 7 score in what you can term either as an exhibition or practice game. Manager Frett didn't have the usual spares on the bench so used only ten men Wally Frett and Willie Klapperich sharing the pitching. Manager McCulla had a full bench so used sixteen players in an attempt to get a look at all the boys who hope to break into the lineup when the bell rings, next Sunday for the opening of the county league season.
