Never a /dull moment In McHenry's sports whirl. , We find that some, though interested in the .welfare of our young people, have never seen the Little League field at the V.F.W. park. It would do your heart good to go over and watch a game. The boys are enthusiastic, the officers continue to do a tremendous job', managers and coaches give many hours of their time. It is all a part of a plan to guide good boys along the path that will make them good men. ' y You will see a story .on this page by Kelly Brown, Pony League reporter, telling about the new diamond for their group. It adjoins the- Little League field and, as Fred Meyer stated, the young fellows can move right over when they reach the new age group. SHAMROCKS ROCK ALGONQUIN AND STOP ELGIN VFW Nolan, Sianek And Becknell Lead Way -- In Team Victories The Pony League " needs your help right now. Sponsors, advertisers and all interested parties play a big part. Please read Kelly's article if you haven't done so. Over at the city diamond we found Bob McCulla's 1957 Shamrocks in high gear. They- walloped Elgin's VJF.W. team in a pace that is gaining recognition for the McHenry entry in county league baseball. The county league schedule tells us that Crystal Lake will appear ©n the Johnsburg diamond Sunday. That should be a one to watch. McHenry has an open date, but we hear they will pick up a rained out contest. We have nothing official Seemed like old times to see Art Jackson stroll in with the Tiger box score, ^e used to have some good visits when Art managed the team and brought them through to top honors. POMiTLEAGUE BUILDING MEW BALL DIAMOND AT V.F.W. PARK; FINANCE COMMITTEE SKKS ASSISTANCE A note fwpi W. JiiQker down Texas 'way said nothing* about their storms, but let us know our former McHenry resident is still following baseball. We found him a keen student of the game. He is following Billy Klaus with interest. Never a Memorial Day rolls around that we don't think of Simon Stoffel and R. I. Overton. They never missed a patriotic service.. Solid citizens of earlier McHenry. The Little League« group is bustin' at the seams. Believe it or not, there are now 278 boys enrolled. Many towns have major teams only,"but our group wants to take care of as many as possible. Bill Bolger tells us the minor league schedule will be ready for publication next week. How about cutting out those schedules when the whole family has had a chance to read the paper? Pin them up as remniders. THE GREAT OUTDOORS By Jack Walsh Fishing is at a high point and the bluegills, crappies and' bass are really hitting surface lures. Red, white or tan poppers seem to be best for pan fish. A slow retrieve variated with a slight twitch of the fly seems to be one of the" best ways of getting the fish to strike. For evening fishing, "the fish stay close to shore and' we caught a good sized bass the other night not two feet from shore oh a tiny bluegill popper. When fly casting or still fishing from a boat, most of the fish are caught within fifteen feet of the shore. Of course, this does not always hold true because there are many spawn beds which are located far out from shore. They really murdered the crappies at Fox Lake over the weekend. As far as we know they are still biting like mad. Lake Geneva has been pretty p r o d u c t i v e l a t e l y . N u m e r o u s catches of bass, northerns and panfish have been reported. In a lake that size one must know the spots to have good luck consistently. The only, way to find them is to fish long and hard. It is work, but it often pays big dividends. The McHenry Shamrocks blasted two opponents in. the county league last we&k to remain in second place with 3 wins any one loss. The Shamrocks traveled to Algonquin on Memorial Day and had a hitters holiday by^blasting three Algonquin hurlers for 13 rujis and 23 hits. Gene Jascott was the winning pitcher. Madden, McHenry's snappy little short-stop, fanned to start the first inning. Stanek followed with a single, his first of four hits, and was promptly belted home by a double off the bat of Becknell. Jascott scored Becknell with a double and scored himself when H. Knox hit a three and two pitch intb right field for a single. McCulla forced Knox at second, Mc- Culla stole second and went to third on Bol^. Nolan's sharp hit to left. J. Knox forced Nolan at second to end the innings Algonquin solved Bob Kulin's curve ball in the first inning and, after four runs had scored, Manager McCulla replaced Kulin with Gene Jascott. McHenry scored 1 run in the second when Madden was safe on an error and came home on Becknell's double to right. Algonquin scored 3 runs in their half on the inning with two hits and two walks. In the third McHenry got 3 runs when McCulla led off with a single to center and scored on Bob Nolan's towering triple to left. Knox and Hink grounded out and Madden followed with a single, Stanek doubled, scoring Madden. Becknell fanned to end the inning. In the fifth the Shamrocks got two when Nolan singled and was driven home by John Knox's hit to right. Knox stole second and scored on a double by Madden. McHenry scored their last three runs of the game in the sixth when Jascott singled and Howard Knox followed with a double to right field moving Jascott to third. McCulla then smashed a two and two pitch over short to score Jascott and Knox. McCulla scored on Bob Nolan's hard hit double to center. Elgin Game On Sunday the Shamrocks met a strong Elgin V.F.W. team and battered two hurlers for 12. hits and ten runs. Big Tom Nolan was the winning pitcher. The righthanded fire-baller walked 5, struck out 12 and allowed 2 hits in gaining his first decision of the year. Chuck Pierce relieved Nolan in the ninth and pitched hitless ball. The game was highlighted by Gene Jascott's 400 foot homerun to left and Bill Becknell's triple, double and two singles in five trips. A footnote from Bob McCulla: ^^don't want to be acpiised of overoptimism by predicting the Shamrocks will win the cpunty league this year. I am sure all you sports fans know the difficulty of bringing a last place team to first. But I'd like to say we're all trying to give this town a better brand of baseball and we need your help and support. After all, the kids playing pony, little league and Legion will graduate to a bigger and better class of ball someday and that place should be the home team. It's a shame when some of our best ball-players have to go out of -town to play on a winning club. It isn't any fun losing and sometimes the phycological effect of a good crowd and some car horns does a lot to bolster spirits. So I am inviting you fans to come down and watch the Shamrocks win some ball games. We start home games at two o'clock. Space On Home Run Fence Is Now Available by Kelly Brown Well, I suppose you have noticed that at last worl^ has started on our Pony League, diamond. Chuck Miller really moved a lot of dir^in a few days time. If we can only get a break in the weather, it can be finished in a short time. Then the backstop and fencing can be put up and the dug-outs made and' it will -be ready for the cali "Play Bcfll!". But, you will have to realize that the building of the field willbe the easiest part of the project. The hard part and the part that makes you lose sleep' is paying for it. Chuck Miller is really giving us a big break in the grading and laying out of the diamond and we owe him many thanks. It still is going to cost a lot of money, but we have faith in the businessmen of McHenry and know it will all come out in the end. What better use could you put your money to than to help a bunch of our future young, men of McHenry. In order to cover the cost of adding the backstop and dug-outs and fencing, we will have to sell advertising on the home run fence which will run a total of $55.00 for a 4' x 8' space for a period of two years. This includes the lettering of the advertisement. We have about 15 businessmen that have come forward already to take space, but we have about 35 more to go. So we would ask every business firm to give it a lot of thought and if you can see your way clear to help a "nice group of boys have a field of their own, get in touch with one of the officers or call me at 445-R and I will be glad to explain it to you in detail. If one of the officers or managers contact you, please do not say no until you have given it a lot of thought and you will always have this great bunch of boys pulling for you and thank-, ing you. Mr. Schoenholtz wanted the field built behind the Junior High, when the diamond was in question, as he is very interested in getting a diamond for his boys to play on. This was a very nice gesture on his part in trying to help us as well as his boys so we wish to returi\ the favor and .tell him that when his baseball season rolls around next year he is welcome to use the Pony League diamond as his own. Lyle Anderson made us a wonderful proposition regarding the backstop and fence, that if we pay for the fencing he will donate the labor for putting it up. What finer men can you meet up with than those in our community. I have no doubt that in two weeks time we can have the field all finished and paid for. So please, please, pleasje. Dor^t forget us. ' JUNIOR LEGION The McHenry Junior Legion baseball team opened its season with a 5-2 win over Hebron on the Johnsburg field Sunday. The Hebron and Richmond areas have combined to form one team. # McHenry jumped 'off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with the aid of four walks. and an error. Hebrorf tied the score in the third on a hit, an error and a fielder's choice. Don Bentz's double and Denny Litwin's single put McHenry in front in the last of the third. Two walks and two hit batsmen led to McHenry's final runs in the fifth. Gene Freund pitched five innings to get the win with Denny Lit win hurling the final two innings. JUNE 16-17-18 CHAIHUAKES WATER PATROL HOLIDAY REPORT Shows Memorial Day Safest In History For Water Sports The Chain O'Lakes Water Patrol would like to thank all the water sport enthusiasts who enjoyed the - Fox River Chain O'Lakes for their fine cooperation in making this Memorial Day the safest on record. The reception that the patrol received from the public was surely a sign that the patrol has now been accepted and is recognized for its fine work. Chief of the Patrol Ralph Buikema reports'that the patrol did not receive one- report of a1 mishap, which indicated full cooperation of the public. There were emails for information regarding safety rules, directions and" requests for assistance due to motor failures. Dangers Pointed Out There was a report that fishermen were dropping lines from the bridge on route 120 at McHenry, interfering with the speedboats and causing a serious hazard to boaters using the passagtways under the bridge. Lt. Charles Hermann §r., who was on duty at Headquarters, dispatched a patrol boat with Lts. Jim Lishamer and Paul Smith, and Patrolman John Shay to the scene. The, dangers were pointed out to the fishermen and they'obligingly cooperated. Captain Marchetti reported that the wakes through the channels were at the lowest rate in all his years with the patrol. He also pointed out that fishermen seemed to enjoy a more troublefree holiday this year with speedboats keeping their distance, and the fishermen cooperating fully. Sgt. Peter Manno and Patrolman Patrick Auriemno reported one case of a skier being towed too close to the piers along the shore at Fox Lake. New Patrol Boat Assistant Chief Drohnner was proud of the new patrol boat as he kept answering inquiries as to size, speed and type of safety equipment aboard. The new members, who Were on their first day of duty with the patrol, were encouraged by the acceptance and were impressed by the fine operating procedures. Thy said that they never realized that their work was so important and are proud to be part of the organization which is performing such a great public service. The Patrol agaih thanks all those who helped make this holiday such a safe and happy day.
