Pig# Four! THE 5 McHTOmf^PLAIWDBU^-TlgiiiiiiiliilElSS 20, 1957 "Ag- a Kcn)t"^ A circus in town this week brings back majiy memories. In the years BJ (before television), we didn't see many fancy acts. Of course, we saw a tent show called Uncle Tom's Cabin, but a circus was something real and something great When the circus came in freight cars and later by trucks, it wasn't uncommon for people . to arise iearly to watch the unloading. The elephants, trained to push* a freight car or lift a heavy pole, were usually our choice. A few lucky kids had jobs carrying water to the elephants and that earned a free ticket to the main show. . Then, as jnow, the clowns pleased young and old with their makeup^ and cutups. Ah--and that circus music! They-, held a "Father and Son Jamboree" at the Johnsburg Bowling resort last Saturday and Sunday and had a great time. Boys, 14 years and under, bowled with their dads in one bracket while 15 year olds joined their dads in another group. * In the first group, Vernon and Dennis Freund took first place with 1283 pins. Vernon and Richard Baker of Round Lake were close on . the winner's heels with 1261 for second place. In the seconB bracket a tie resulted for first place with 1218 pins. Frank and Donald Dabarsky of McHenry tied with Harold and Bill Weber of Woodstock. Leonard Ryden Sr. and Leonard Jr. of McHenry were third, with 1209. J. and A1 Hyland of Ringland took fourth with 1189. It was a nice chance for fathers and sons to pal on Fathers' Day. ..... Valparaiso University tells us that Lyle Davidson received a major award for his play with the tennis squad this year. Nice going, Lyle. The fellow they call "Rugged Paul Petitclair" in the newspapers Is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Freund. Paul drew a lot of fine publicity in the state high school baseball tournament held in Peoria as he came mighty close to pitching Waukegan high into the championship. Paul was only a junior this year, but a big fellow. He pitched a 2-hitter to beat Alleman high of Rock Island, then lost a heart, breaker to Proviso (1-0) in the championship 'game, allowing only one hit. Should hear more about that boy in future years. For a long time we have watched batters take too many good balls, then go for the ones with too much stuff on them to get more than cNloUd fouL We would like to see a trial game some day in which both managers would give the batters a free hand' to Swing at the good ones no matter What the count. It would be interesting to see the results. ' Albert was taking part in a local concert. He was only 7 yrs. old, but recited so well that he was encouraged. "Well, Albert, and how did you get on?" asked the proud father when he returned home. "Why, I thought I did all right," replied the youngster, "but they made medo it again." Had a short chat with Ray Miller this week and learned that he is going to try some Saturday ball games and maybe some twilight contests. On Saturday of this week the Johnson Motors nine from Waukegan will appear at Miller's Corners to play the Richmond team. If you aren't working Saturday, Ray invites you to go up and see the ball game. Mandy's of Elgin will appear On the Johnsburg diamond next Sunday as the undefeated Tigers fight to keep their slate clean. CHAIN O'LAXES WATER PATROL GIVES ANSWERS , Explain Functions ^ And Authority In Protecting Boaters The Chain O'Lakes Water Patrol takes this opportunity to answer a few of the sample questions that have been directed to the Chain O'Lakes Water Patrol during its season of operations. These questions, naturally, request only a fraction of the many that are asked to members of the Patrol, as Well as those received via U.S. Mail at Patrol Headquarters, located in Fox Lake, Illinois. Chief Ralph Buikema of the Patrol said that this will be the first of a series of questions and answer sessions to the publicized to acquaint the public of the operations and functions of the Patrol itself. If, according to Buikema, the answers stated for the questions thus far asked are not sufficient to clear any wonders of our fellow sportsmen, we ask that they1 send any boating questions to: Chain O'Lakes Water Patrol Fox Lake, Illinois. ' Q. Does your patrol have police authority? A. Absolutely! Police powers being the power of arrest, have been endowed on the membership of the Chain O'Lakes Water Patrol by the Sheriff's Office. Q. Is reckless operation of a boat limited to speeding? A. It certainly is not! Reckless operation also includes boat overloading, creating waves capable of creating damage, operating in areas frequented by swimmers, pulling skiiers in areas where there are swimmers or fishermen, as well as causing any type of collision. ^ Q. Last, summer, our-bo^ fOrcibly was boarded by members of your patrol for a safety inspection for which was received a windshiel decal. In the process of inspecting our boat, the patrolmen were rude, discourteous and used bullying tactics. If this was an example of ypur patrol's duties, why do you permit them to use these distasteful measures? A. First of all, it is imperative to remember that our organization does not encourage or practice safety inspections of ANY vessel by any members of our patrol, except at the sole request of the boat owner, who desires to know if his boat is properly equipped so as to pass the Coast Guard inspection. (All Patrol boats are inspected by <the Coast Guard, of whom the Patrol has' the highest regard and respect). It may answer your question by saying that our organization was chartered March - 30, 1955 and since then there NEVER has been a complaint such as yours that was directed to our attention. Besides, our men are instructed- to be courteous in every way and to assist all persons using the Fox River Chain-O-Lakes. Any abuse or misconduct toward the public would subject the members to a hearing before „ the executive board. If found guilty, it would lead to his or their immediate discharge from the Patrol. Q. Do all members wear a badge signifying that they are a member of the Patrol? A. Yes! Each member can be identified by his cap badge that bears the name of the Chain O'Lakes Water Patrol and his assigned patrol number. Official Uniform Described Chief Buikema, who urged that the public become thoroughly acquainted with the official prescribed uniform of the Chain-OLakes Water Patrol, gives this description: Hat: White, topped police styled regulation hat. Shirt: Regulation blue police shirt with black tie. Trousers: Dark blue. Chief Buikema states that our men can always be distinguished from others by their friendly attitudes and willingness to help those in trouble; also, by their smile, their neatness and their courteous mannerisms. Watch for all'of the men in blue who answer these characteristics and you will come to know them as your Chain-OLakes Water Patrol members. The Water Patrol is your patrol, organized for you, the water sport enthusiasts. The patrol'^ function is to promote safety and to protect the public from those who operate boats in a reckless manner causing hazards to life and property. These dangerous "hot-rod" boaters are subject to arrest according to Chief Buikema. Lt. Jim Lishamer SHAMROCKS STAY IN SECOND PLACE WITH WIN OVER RICHMOND The Shamrocks continued ^ their pleasing habit of winning ball games by batting Richmond 6 to 3 here last Sunday in a county league game. Richmond came to town with a ball club that looks like a winner, but one that has been leaving a flock of runners strandied on the base paths. Their defensive play was not up to previous performances. The Shamrocks were not especially ferocious with their bats, but played heads-up baseball and made their hits count. Topn Nolan had a rough time with his control, four batters being hit by pitched balls. However, Tom stayed in there and gained credit for the victory. The Shamrocks are in second place in the league with a 4-1 record, having lost only to the first place Tigers of Johnsburg. Next Sunday the home team travels to Dundee for the final game in the first round of play. McHenry <6) A*B. R. H.
