FREUND Mayor THREE CHURCHES IN AREA SERVED BY TWO NEW PASTORS Eighty-three Methodist^churches in northern piinoisAdll have new pastors in their pulpits on Sunday, June 30, including three in this area. Two are' the Greenwood- Ringwood churches, which have been served by Rev. Roland J. Reid, who "has been transferred to the Humboldt Park church at 1709 N. Fairfield. His place will be taken by Rev. Arthur J. Bell, who comes here from Minnesota. The second local church is at Spring Grove, where Rev. (Hugh Gilliam will act as pastor, replacing Rev. Ronald Colton, who has been transferred to Hebron. Rev. Gilliam is from North East Ohio. More than 300 ministers were appointed to 378 Methodist churches at this 118th annual session by Bishop Charles W. Brashares, conducted between June 17 and 21. Rev. J. SENATOR'S WIDOW SENDS LETTERS TO LOCAL RESIDENTS A number of local residents have received interesting letters from Mrs. Jean McCarthy of Wisconsin, widow of the late Senator Joseph McCarthy, in answer to messages of condolence sent to her after his passing. One of these persons was Mrs. Eva Ritter Wells. We quote in part from the letter she received: "I cannot help but feel that his sacrifice of personal comfort, his aioneness at times --along with that of many unknown and unheralded men-- will have been for nought unless we see the purpose of the/immense drive that wa shis. Joe once said in answer to the question, 'What can I do to help?' Look to your schools, search behind the printed word, give purpose to and demand a contract from the men you send to man the watchtowers in Washington. If everyone of Joe's friends took that suggestion to heart, I would then know God's purpose had been done. "May I add an afterthought I know Joe would share. That is, never underestimate your power as a citizen." mmmmmmmmmmmmmrnrntmrn PUBLIC PULSEf We should change the slogan on Illinois license plates to read, "Land of Special Interest Groups" As you read of the legislature passing all kinds of bills, it makes ; it look like the taxpayers be darned full speed ahead. If AJ; _ Lincoln was alive I believe he would throw the state of Illinois out of the Union. And we, the people, are to blame, we lack the - courage to speak up in our own defense. To save ourselves, we must organize some association to represent us and protect us in Spring- " field. There is . lobbying going on by special interests groups all the time. Let's get together, citizens and taxpayers of all sorts, on . personal property tax and real estate tax. In a recent issue of the Sun- Times in Springfield, the follow? ing article appeared: "One person who got a break, on his tax bill was Orville E. Hodge, the imprisoned former state auditor. Mayor Nelson O. Howartli of Springfield revealed Wednesday that the total 1956 tax bill on- Hodge's luxurious Lake Springfield home was only $67.04. Hodge said the house was worth $50,000, and it sold recently for $30,130. But Ball Township, even after applying the county equalizer, assessed it at $2,610." A Taxpayer Eugene Piotrowski SALES TAX COLLECTION McHenry received $4,628.73 as the result of city sales tax collections duri&g April, covering March tax liability. In all of the state. $3,922,827 was distributed to the various municipalities. OVERHEATED OVEN Members of the Johnsburg sta- * tion were called to extinguish a fire caused by an overheated oveh at the Skysweeper plant last week. Little damage was reported. MINE OUTPUT The sapping mines of Illinois produced 3,749,045 tons of coal during April, 132,396 tons less than in March, according to the Department of Mines and Minerals.
