Art Martin was telling us that one hot night Harvey Nye counted the days 'till Christmas Eve. -A - few people have asked, "When do you start your vacation?" That's a good question. Manager Bob McCuila and his Shamrocks are all pepped up over a chance to enter the state tournament at Elgin this year. Johnsburg wound up in first place at the end of the first round of play in the county league so is a definite entry. The Shamrocks have to play off a game .with Crystal Lake next Sunday to settle second place and the right to play in the • tournament. Each team has lost one game. The Shamrocks really have a Little League As you may have noticed by the Little League standings, this year we have the best balance in our league, since we started. And as we -had hoped, interest is good. McHenry's Little League has gained recognition far and wide for their fine ball park, for their player participation and sportsmanship. In fact, the officers of the Northern Illinois Umpires Association have told us that our league is the finest they have seen, anywhere. There are a number of, people in this vicinity who have read about Little League and think it is a fine thing --- but they have never g6tten around to seeing a ball game. So, we are proclaiming Sunday July 6th as Little League Parents Day. Talk about beautiful Wrigley Field. McHenry's diamond looks like a million bucks. Everything but vines on the walls, if we had walls. The boys play a double-header tomorrow (ITie Fourth). Mandy's of Elgin come here for the first game. Crystal Lake follows. Joe Frett takes his Tigers, to Richmond to meet Ray Miller's team in the holiday game. Next Sunday McHenry travels to Crystal Lake while Dundee comes to Johnsburg. Small boy to father: "There's a special PTA meeting tonight-- just you, my teacher, and the principal." There seems to be an epidemic of sports cars and those little gobuggies these days. One attracks the girls. The other cuts down on travel cost. Take your pick. Just thinking about a Fourth of July long ago when we received a quarter for our early summer labor. Went to a carnival in the old. driving park (Now Wattle's Subdivision) and held on to that two bits for dear life. Once you crack those big coins they go like wildfire. If you think the young sprouts are in too gay a mood, just remember--"You are getting older when you feel your corns more than your oats". is plenty of shade and a playground for the little children. Now for a word about the Little League managers and coaches. We have six major teams and ten minor teams. Each team has a manager and one or two coaches. These men are among the finest group of adultsj that can be found. Many of them give their time year after year and that, I believe, is the reason McHenry's Little League has gained such a high place in the mhid's of the National Headquarters and the umpires association. To the sponsors of these teams goes much of the credit for the league's success. It has cost money to outfit these teams witn uniforms, equipment and insurance. It didn't cost a little--it cost a lot--but these sponsors stayed with the league since the start. The following business places have sponsored teams: Hester Oil Co.; Tonyan Construction Co.; McHenry State Bank; Buss Motor Sales; McHenry Sand and Gravel; and Oyerton Motors. Also, I believe, some credit must go to those who bought ads on the home run fence. Without their support, it would not be possible to have the beautiful ball park that we have at the V.F.W. grounds. Now. just one more thing. We have the players. We have the managers. We "have the sponsors. But we want more fans, especially parents of these Little League boys. SHAMROCKS WIN OYER GIANTS OF HEBRON 11 TO 3 DAILY PINUPS: Your funny-bone is always an ace up your sleeve. They who never alter their opinion are finished products. Little boys learn to walk, talk and balk; bigger boys learn to dance, prance and glance. The Nolan brothers, using their combined talents brought the Shamrocks home with a victory. Tom pitched the complete game, allowing only five scattered hits. Bob Nolan banged out five hits for five tries, including a home run, two triples and h double. Ron Madden, McHenry's shortstop, triggered two double, plays while the team as a whole played errorless ball behind the fireballing Nolan. Madden has been selected by Illinois coaches to play in the National High School baseball tournament in New York in August. He will be out of the Shamrock line-up for one game. The Shamrocks remain in the thick of the - state ' toumy rate. Sunday's win gives the McHenry entry a 6 won 1 loss record. On the 4th of July the Shamrocks battle Elgin and Crystal Lake (who also have a 6-1 record) to determine who goes to the state tournament in EFgm on July 17. The bays have promised this writer to really be "up" for these two. Your support is needed, fans! A footnote from McCuila: I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the City Council for installing a new fence, new benches and score board (special thanks to McHenry Lumber Co., Tonyan Construction Co. ind Alexander Lumber Co.); also for widening our diamond. As far as I'm concerned, no diamond in the county is better. Councilmen, take a bow! The JShfisburg Tigers had to work like all get out and work they did to come through with a 7 to 6 over the visiting Elgin .V.F.W. baseball team last Sunday. Klapperich breezed along with a 7-1 lead at the end of six innings, having allowed only two hits, then came events that made the game an exciting thriller right to the final out. Elgin scored an unearned run in the first inning, but that looked harmless when the Tigers bounced back with three runs when their turn came to pick up their bats. Lloyd-Freund drove in one run and Dick Hiller two as production got underway. Richard Freund walked, stole second and scored on Sonny Miller's hit to right in the second. In the third, Dick Hiller boomed a "home run beyond the score board and was around thjrd base before the ball found nts final resting place in high weeds. At the request of the man in blue, Lloyd Freund left the1 lineup in the fifth after an argument on whether Leach had stolen second or was tagged out. That took strength out of the lineup. Suffice to say the man in blue won. Play of the Game The play of the . game came in the sixth when Hiller (Dick-- not Hank) raced far down the right field line to haul in a foul off. the bat of Young. Hahn attempted to score after the catch, but Dick whirled and fired the ball to Tom Huemann for a double play. Johnsburg's last run came in the sixth. Pilcher had two out and Richard Freund at bat when a return from his catcher caught him on the end of a finger. Pilcher had to retire and turn the job over to Daucksabage. Freund walked. Miller hit to left. Brennan walked. So did Art Jackson to force in what proved to be the winning run. •1 It was in the seventh that the complexion of the game changed. With two out and two on, Hiller failed to come up with Mitchell's grounder. Three more- hits and four runs followed. Klassen drove a home run past Art Jackson in the eighth for Elgin's final run. There was tenseness in the: ninth when, with one out, Mitchell drove a double down the left! field line. Hahn then lifted to1 Nowak and Hiller was in thr> right spot for a sinking liner by Mattison.
