J$y UJafaii. •"AXX- 9HeaHJ'% V Long time now we figured that •tone in January story a myth, but we saw Halloween in July. Drove down Green Street Sunday night and.saw a building in the street. Yep. In the street. When we arrived, Officers Weichmann and Espey were standing guard while Ernie Useman, Sr. was inspecting the Chic Sale masterpiece. The structure had been moved to the curb near Gus Unti's. awaiting Wally Aevermann and the city truck. Witness reported that some boys in a truck (description withheld in this report) had placed the little old outhouse smack in the center of the Green and Elm corner and taken off laughing like all get out. This was a summerized job. No door. Just a curtain. We do not know what action the police have taken, but we trust that the masterpeiece has been returned to its rightful owner and the boys instructed to secure a moving permit before engaging in further activities. Saw our White Sox beat Baltimore 3 to 1 last week and, thought we had them straightened out. The next day they blew one in the ninth. Oh, well--we can't be with them every day. Met a couple of real baseball fans at the state tournament at Elgin Saturday night. First we met John Schreiner, then looked up* to see John Aylward. They never miss. The Johnsburg Tigers gave it a great try, but lost a 5 to 0 game to the Chicago Vets. Another year is coming. See separate reports turned in on Little League and Pony League for activities. In the County League, the schedule for next Sunday is this way: Hebron at Johnsburg McHenry at Elgin V.F.W. Mandy's at Crystal Lake Algonquin at Richmond/ \ Little League Frids^V^July 19th,--tournament play in all areas -in the United States and Canada started for Little League. McHenry, of Area 4, District 13, was matched against Tri-City on Saturday, July 20. Tri-City was a heavy pre-tournament favorite to win area 4 and a good choice to win the district. In , a well. deserved, well played game, McHenry was victorious 4-1. The team played heads-up ball ar»d special recognition should be given to the whole of the good team. This gives the Shamrocks their first win after four defeats in a row. Tom Nolan showed the form capable of winning the close ones as he held the Indians to 6 scattered hits and allowed only one unearned run. The big right hander also displayed real competitive spirit when after being struck in the head by one of Kreeger's pitches he refused to be taken out for another pitcher, Nolan went on tq rack up his fourth win in the county league by displaying a be given to the pitching done by j sharp breaking hook and aspirin Vern Peterson which could not have been matched by any in any tablet fast ball. On the hitting side, Charley Olson, McHeriry's big league. Just to mention a spirited catcher, got .two hits, few, the base running of Hachmeister, (the hitting of Dennis Freund and the good, all around hitting and playing of the team was some of the best. Anyone that had the opportunity to see the game could not deny that it was some of the best playing they had seen in a long time. An interesting sidelight to Denny' Freund's hitting was that he hit his first home run, driving in 3 runs and just missed a drove in one rtin apd scored the winning tally in the fourth inning. McHenry scored both of their runs in the fourth when Jaskot led off with a single and w&s erased when Bob Nolan hit into a sacrifice. On the next play Nolan showed blazing speed as he stole second to put himself in scoring position. McCulla bounced out to short as Nolan held. Then, with two out, Olson sent a sharp hit to center scoring Nolan. On the second. Denny wore his glasses, throw to the late olson slid into and a visor cap which he should second safeiy. Woodstock Protect ;j#; Our ;••• •• •' A -J Nation's Youth Ef by Charley Brown Well pur dreams of a Pony League diamond have just about come true. If you want to see something that sprang lip over night take a look at the V;f\W: and see the Diamond coming to life. I told Bill Klapperich to-night that you would not believe thsit so much could be i done in a few days. . In two days time the home run fence was started and finished. It seemed impossible, but it happened. I guess when you get b few of the men together that are interested in a project of this kind they just If.eep going and the first thing you know it is' done. . It would be impossible to' thank these managers of ours, and ..the. boys who came out and put in the hours working in the mud for the first few days to make this field possible. , .$ Many thanks to Ernie Falsetti for pitching in and pounding nails in the home run fence. If., we had more men like him and our own men like Bart Yegge, Louis, Swedo, Pete DeCico, Don Johnson, A1 Baur, Lawrence Klapperich and the slave driver, Bill Klapperich, we would not have a worry in the world. Lyle Anderson deserves a special mention all by himself. I never saw a man that is willing to give so much and ask for nothing in return. He came over and spent a whole evening drilling holes for the "home run fence and saved us so much work and was willing to do this just out of the bigness of his heart. We will never be able to repay him, blit we will never forget his kindness to us. Next Sunday the games will all be played on „ the new diamond and will continue there from now on. Denny Swedo has come up with the batting averages of the top ten boys, so here they are. Too much work waiting, but a fellow is twisting our arm to go up to Milwaukee to seethe Braves and Philadelphia. Won't take much more twisting. A fellow can stand only so.much. Chief of Police, Joe Grobel, will pick up a number of tickets for the All-Star football game from Chief "Tiny" Hansman at Woodstock one of these days and turn them over to us for distribution. Please send in your request early in order that we can make a list. Bart Yegge will line up the boys in the various leagues and determine the number of tickets needed. Any of you athletes who are interested, please contact us soon. And we won't neglect you young girls who are interested in sports activities. Dick Perez, Illinois' senior football guard from Aurora (Marmion Military Academy), might well be rated the "toughest player in the nation." Perez was struck by an automobile while crossing a campus street last spring, and bounced into the" path of another vehicle, which also hit him. Net result? A short stay in the hospital for Perez, who received only minor injuries, and trips to body shops for two damaged automobiles. 1959 in the U.S., with the exception of Williamsport. The Saturday and Sunday July 27, 28, District Finals will be here. On Saturday at 2:00 P.M. Woodstock will meet Freeport. At 4:00 P.M. Crystal Lake plays Elgin. Sons of Legion will perform between games. Sunday at 3:00 p.m. the winners will meet. From here the winners go to Libertyville, then to Ottawa, then to Crystal Lake, then to Williamsport. It is only fair and right to say that the kind and generous people of McHenry helped make the field and the tournament a success. The Little League thanks them and ask for their continued help. Master of Ceremonies, Fred Meyer, introduced the following at the program last Sunday: Presented--George P. Freund, Mayor George Sullivian, Sentinel Earl Walsh, Plaindealer Harvey Nagel, Tourney Director William Pries, VFW Commander McHenry V.F.W. Drum and ^ugle Corps ^performed in their usual snappy manner, adding greatly to the success of the program. DAILY PINUPS: A successful man needs landing gear as well as wings. When a woman stares pensive, her thoughts run expensive. Some folks put two and two together and somehow have your number. The Fox River still has quite a few fish in it. These seem to be mainly bullheads and catfish, although some panfish are also being caught. Some fishermen have been doling quite well on catfish with-setlines. V The biggest - problem of those who fish the Fox is to find a place that is not all churned up by boats. One fisherman at Pistakee Bay complained, "Those speedboats have the whole lake to tear up, but they all seem to have to pass, by me first." Our sympathies, are with Win. Some nice bluegills were, caught by Vern Freund in Lily Lake last Sunday. Fifty-tWo to be exact. We "seldom hear of many sizeable catches in that lake. Maybe it is starting to pick up a bit; We tried the notorious "Spoonplug" and liad no results. We must be losing our grip because it is "guaranteed to catch fish." We have • had some discussions with other fishermen who have tried it. Some are for it and some against it- We think that confidence in your bait of plug is an important factor. That is why some anglers use only one or two "favorite plugs." The new hunting licenses are here. They will be distributed to resorts, sports stores jand other locations where they were previously sold. At present the '57 hunting license may be purchased at the city clerk's office here in McHenry. JUNIOR LEGION OVER CRYSTAL LAKE IN COUNTY TOURNEY The c McHenry Junior Legion baseball team beat Crystal Lake Sunday 14-10 in the first round of the county tournament. The home team took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but McHenry came back in the second to score all of its- runs. The reserves took over thereafter and barely managed to hold on to the lead. Litwin was the winning pitcher but Tom Clay baugh" and Gene Freund also worked on the mound. The big second inning started with Jim Justen being hit with a pitched ball. Rem Smith beat out a bunt and John Gates walked. John Moss singled home one run and, after Roger Benson walked, Jack Schaefer cleared the bases with a triple. Freund was hit with a pitched ball and stole second. Litwin's hit scored two runs. Bentz hit safely and Justen and Smith walked. Gates drove in a run With an infield out. That's when he will find out why we wanted him for treasurer. Aren't they -supposed to do the worrying? He should be used to it by now. Louis McPherson, 36, of Wonder Lake was placed in county jail under $5,000 bond last Saturday for allegedly impersonating the man who put him there, Justice of the Peace Joe Ritter. The story started several weeks ago when McPherson, in jail on a, traffic violation, met Joseph Ramsey, 19, of Spring Grove. Both were released and Ramsey went to work for a Wonder Lake family. In the meantime, according to .the charge, McPherson went to the Wonder Lake, home, and representing himself as Justice Ritter, collected from, the employer. When county deputies arrested Ramsey Thursday for not paying the fines, he produced the receipts McPherson had given. The case will be heard Saturday July 27.
