We arrived five minutes late and the party was over. Uncle John Dreymiller baked a cake and picked a bouquet of flowers for the occasion and all the gang stood round to sing Happy Birthday. Very touching. Sports fans like to talk about our American Legion baseball team and the great job Tom Bolger has done through the years in bringing the boys along the right trail. The boys have learned a lot of baseball and many other good lessons that will help them in future years. They lost a couple of close games in tournament play, but that's the way the ball bounces. That Ed Doyle won't believe what we tell him after we have seen things with our own two eyes. We watched the Sox beat Baltimore, then saw Milwaukee lose to Philadelphia. We concluded that you could put those two National {League infields on the diamond at the same time and they couldn't cover the ground the Sox infield covers. The daily bag and possession limit has been increased from 8 to 10 for this coming season. The Fish and Wildlife Service reports, "The recently completed dove survey indicates that the 1957 dove breeding population continues in a very favorable condition, the Service has concluded that a further slight liberalization in the length^of the season may be permitted." We do not see how this will help the Illinois dove hunters much because shortly after the season opens large numbers of doves start migrating to their southern wintering grounds . The increased limit may help some, but it is a good shot who can knock down ten doves a day. We are going to have a deer season here in Illinois this year. It will be the first one in 57 years. Dates for the open season will be October 1 to 15 inclusive for bow and arrow hunters, and November 1, 2 and 3 for shotgun and slug. Thirty-three counties have been declared open for deer hunting and about 15,000 permits will be available. Bow hunters will be ^permitted to hunt in any of the open counties, but shotgun hunters are asked to list a first and second choice county when filing their applications. They will be restricted to single counties. For application write to Permit Office, Illinois Department of Conservation, State Office Building, Springfield. We will list counties to be open for deer hunting next week.. Mrs. Mary E. Rose will begin her duties, officially, as McHenry county home adviser today, Aug. 1. She has been approved by the county home economics extension council and by the University of Illinois home economics extension staff. PROGRAM PROVIDES FOR EQUALIZATION OF TAX ASSESSMENT The 70th General Assembly, in a three-part packaged program; has set up the machinery foif the equalization:property tax assessments witHln a county. Since 1946, the state has equalized between counties by issuing county m u l t i p l i e r s . H p w e v e r , b e c a u s e townships assess at various ratios of so-called IdO per cent value, a single courfty multiplier does not cure internal, inequities. For instance., if {he assessor in township" v,A" assessed property at 10 per cent of Male value, the assessor in township "B" at 15 per cent, and the assessor in township "C" at 20 per cent, a county multiplier of 4 applied to1 the assessments of the three townships would not bring them up to thp same level. To correct such ills within a county, Senators W. Russell Arrington of EVariston and Merritt A. Little of Aurora and Rep. Louis E. Beckman of Kankakee sponsored remedial legislation at the 70th General Assembly. The first part of the program makes it the mandatory duty 6f the county board of review to equalize assessments at the township level in the same manner in which the state equalizes at the county level. To protect both taxpayer and taxing body. Rep. G. William IHorsley of Springfield sponsored an amendment to the bill to provide that assessments of a township may not go up or down by more than 25 per cent of the previous year's equalized valuation, additions and depletions excluded. Part two of the Arrington-Little program was legislation to strengthen the board of review. The two members appointed by the county judge ,must in the future have experience or training in real estate values and property tax administration. In addition, full time plerk is provided for the board Jtfi counties over 25,000 population to collect and analyze property transfers and properly appraisals. The board of review may meet earlier than the third Monday in June to direct the clerk and go over the data collected by him. This will insure that the board will gain "back-ground" before it performs its equalizing duties. The third part of the program extends the permissive supervisor of assessment law to all counties over 150,000 population, except Cook and St. Qlair. If this office is established, 'the state will pay half of the supervisor's salary. CARD OF THANKS May we take this opportunity Aug. 14 Orioles vs Larks^ 6:80^"thank the many people Qf the. The boys seemed to enjoy it as there was a new record set for home runs. Morenz, of the Cards, hit three home runs in one game. I just wonder if that will ever be tied? * We are going to have a tent at the V.F.W. Carnival and have the boys selling tickets. This week the signs will start to appear on our home run fence and we hope this will help the sale of spaces that are left. Tony Pintozzi of the International Painters, is donating all the painting on the fence, as well as the back stops and bleachers. Many thanks, Tony. Last week we forgot to thank our neighbor and friend, Frank Gende, for the nigrits that he spent at the field helping us put up the fence. He put in a good many hours for which we are very thankful.
