Not the Asiatic flu mind you, just'plain old flu. No fancy name. If we have to feel like this, why can't he' call it something -with a long name or tell us that we have a very unusual case. It WOuld give us more to talk about •In sewing circles, committee meetings and social gatherings? ' ... But no, we have to take the regular two kinds of medicine every three hours and ride out the storm. We feel that a little liquid stimulant might make this bout more pleasant, but pills and capsules with water are all. we can promote. Can't even enjoy a smoke. Tried a good one and it tasted like one of those dried out numbers that "Muggs" dug up and tried to pawn off on us as a gotid will gesture some time ago. Clever girl -- that Mary Ann Noonan. She won a prize at a recent carnival ancT chose a basket. Real handy for lugging future winnings. The honeymoon is over when he phones that he'll be late for supper-- and she has already left a note that it's in the refrigerator. We recently heard of a man so wealthy he has three swimming pools -- one with hot water, one with cold water, and one empty pool for his friends who can't swim. The following paragraph makes us realize that summer is slipping away. Any sophomore boy interested in playing football, report to the high school,'Saturday, August 24 at 1 p.m. to pick up a uniform. Practice will start Monday, August 26 at 6:00 p.m. \ Sorry that flu bug blocked us out of keeping an appointment at the high school this week to get a line on athletics. We'll be there soon and plan to line up some help rin reporting games. "Torchy" Krause asks that you contact him if you would like to bowl in the Thursday 9 o'clock league at McHenry Recreation. You must have an average of 150 or better. A couple oF spots are still open. The county league play-offs start next Sunday with the McHenry Shamrocks at Johnsburg and Richmond at Crystal Lake. This should turn into a real battle down to the wire for the championship. Protect Nation's y outh E by Charley Brown We had a wonderful start Sunday for the dedication of the field, when the weather man took a hand in the affair and that was it. Boy, it really came down. Up to this time though, it was a very nice ceremony, with the Sons of the Legion band starting things off for us, raising the flag and playing it few numbers. They certainly do a wonderful job and'the men responsible for them, and who have put in the hours in practicing with them, should be very proud. The Mayor, George P. Freund, vas kind enough to come over ..nd make Ihe dedication speech, which was in his usual good manner. The mayar has always been interested >n any project that involves the younger citizens of McHenry or surrounding territory. Many thanks, Mayor George P. Freund. Earl WaVi'i, our Master of Ceremonies kept things going, with his good Irish wit and you might say, gift of gab; many of us wish we had half of his speaking ability. The first game was somewhat of an upset. The Braves losing a very important game, but I think Lou Swedo will have the boys all keyed up for the next one. The second game only went about 4 innings so will have to be continued at some later date. There will be games every night this week including Saturday, to make up the schedule. So we can have our All-Star Game Sunday at 1 p.m. The AIl-Stt>.rs better be on their toes for this one as Bart Yegge is losing a lot of sleep worrying about this game and figuring out a new line of strategy. HELP - HELP - FATHERS WANTED. The second game Sunday, the Fathers against the 14 year old boy's, shoul.1 be the game of the year; at 3 p.m. All Fathers of boys in Pony League interested in playing should contact Bill Klapperich who is the manager of the Fathers teapi or AJ. Bauer who is coaching the team. The more Fathers the better because from what bragging the boys are doing we wiJl need a lot of help. Due to the' rain last Sunday, we will have the drawing for the electric stove next Sunday, August 25, between games. Let's all turn out and enjoy an afternoon of baseball. The daily limit is five and the possession limit is ten. We are allowed a 70 day duck season in Illinois again this year. It will open October 19 and close December 27. The goose season in the Northern zone will be the same for ducks. In the Southern we have a little different story. The goose season opens Nov. 8 and closes Dec. 27. This is a 50 day season, by the way, 10 more days longer than last .year. We heard that some fellows from Aurora have been taking quite a few good-sized channel 'Cats near the "new bridge." A1 Bauer said they had a string of about 30 catfish within the space Of 3 or 4 hours. They really must have had some excitement. The Johnsburg Tigers rolled along to a lop-sided 18 to 1 victory over Mandy's of Elgin last Sunday in the final game of the county league regular schedule. Dick Hiller was on base all day, scoring 6 runs and hitting a double, triple and home run. Gene Freund shared the pitching and had a three-bagger and single in three trips. The play-offs next Sunday will find McHenry at Johnsburg and Richmond at Crystal Lake. Johnsburg (8) AB R H Frett, lb 3 3 1 L. Freund, ss 6 12 Hiller, 2b 5 6 3 Jackson, cf 5 0 3 J. The McHenry Junior Legion baseball team wound up its season with a 5-2 win over a good Wauconda team. It was McHenry's 17th win in twenty starts. Gene Freund won his sixth in six decisions. Dennis Freund pitched for Wauconda and except for some well placed McHenry bunts and some shaky support could have fared better. McHenry opened the scoring in the second when Don Bentz singled. Ron Smith and Bob Meyer beat out bunts and Bentz scored on a throwing error. Bob Meyer beat out bunts and Bentz scored on a throwing error. Jim Justen was hit by a pitched ball and Ray Bujak singled two runs across. The locals took a 4-0 lead in the sixth when Meyer Singled, stole second, moved to third on Justen's sacrifice and. scored on John Moss' squeeze bunt. Wauconda scored its two runs in the fourth on a walk, two hits and a couple of errors. The visitors threatened again in the fifth and Denny Li twin came in to save Freund's win by retiring three men after loading the bases with no out. The middle three in McHenry batting order, Bentz, Smith and Meyer, divided six of the teams eight hits while Bujak and Justen each contributed a timely single. McHenry (5) A.B. R. H. The village was incorporated in 1907 and has had the usual experience of mixing growth with progress and difficulty. The growth ahd progress have, of .course, been far greater than the unpleasant aspects and the many organizations in the community have united to put on a nine-day celebration beginning Aug. 24 and ertding, Sept. 1. All activities in connection with celebration are under the direction of the Fox Lake Golden Jubilee commission, which is made up of representatives of all the organizations such as the Fire department, the Legion, the various churches, the garden clubs, the subdivision' associations, P.T.A.S. and the Chamber of Commerce. Many events are planned starting with a large parade on Saturday afternoon on Aug. 24 at 1:30 p.m. Musical organizations, marchers and floats depicting the Past Present and Future will be in- i eluded in the parade. Beginning on Monday, the twenty-sixth, [ there will be water fights every . evening between various neighboring departments. Carnival rides, ; amateur performances and* other ; forms of entertainment will make each evening interesting. | No golden jubilee or centennial would be complete without beards j and old fashioned clothes. They | are already much in evidence, and a stockade fully manned by Key- • stone Cops and Kangaroo court' judges already is in operation on -Grand avenue. The people of Fox Lake invite all readers of the McHenry Plaindealer to visit Fox Lake during the jubilee period and enjoy themselves, just looking around and noting the obvious changes from pioneer days.
