The toll of tJ»e school bell always lets us know that summer is a memory. Then, we have other reminders of picnic plans, short trips and various forms of recre- " ation that were pushed aside. Too much work. TIGERS SCORE 5-4 WIN OVER CRYSTAL LAKE But, when illness takes a crack at you, work must wait. You learn that "All of us are useful, but none of us necessary." The world moves right along. ' Come Friday night and MCHS football gets underway. While our school does not have as large a turnout for football as it should have, the coaches are very high in their praise of the boys on the squad. They sfee goad spirit and cooperation. We hope to see a large crowd at the game Friday night. Had a note from "Tommy" Thomas, former MCHS star, and will surely see him at Homecoming time. Series Shifts To Algonquin Diamond For Second Game Guess there is n6 need of reminding that nights are cool and the ground is damp at these football games. Each year we see people hunched up with the cold. Last year some young gals explained to us that it was so nice and warm in the afternoon that they had no idea it would be cold that night. Half dressed! Two things we are going to promote when McHenry gets a new athletic field. First a press coop. Next a refreshment stand large enough to accomodate a crowd. And coffee for the old folk§. All we can say about our White Sox is that we are building for next year. v DAILY PINUPS: All the king's horses and all the king's men, are hot near as mighty as the stroke of a pen. Politics are no problenV~among the cannibals; they have but one party line - pot luck! A cry and a laugh are the same in any tongue. The Johnsburg Tigers and Crys tal Lake battled right down to the last -of the ninth inning last Sunday at Johnsburg before" the Tigers put across the clincher for a 5-4 victory. This was the first game of the final play-offs for the - McHenry County League championship. Due to the Crystal Lake diamond being under repairs, the game next Sunday will be played at Algonquin. The veteran Willie Klapperich had youthful Terry Britz as his mound opponent last Sunday. Klapperich held quite an edge, allowing only, four hits, but ran into one bad inning when control gave him trouble. After two were out* in the fourth, Wally Frett drew a pass and scored the first run of the game on Butch Nowak's triple. Tom Huemann was hit by a pitched ball, then Klapperich hit safely to send Nowak home. In the fifth Lloyd Freund opened with a hit and stole second base. Art Jackson followed the same pattern and Sonny Miller hit safely. That gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead. An error and a wild pitch helped Crystal Lake to a run in the fifth without benefit of a base hit. Then in the eighth they put together a couple of base hits with a couple of bases on balls and scored three runs to tie up the ball game. We told you about Frett and Nowak combining for the first run. In the ninth this same pair reversed the order, but combined for the winning run. Wally hit the three-bagger this time and Butch provided the single. Howard, coach, "Chip" "H" Stinespring, Gary Ralph Bennett, sponsor; The above picture shows the nett. RICHMOND NINE WINS THIRD PLACE OVER SHAMROCKS. 7-3 Richmond's baseball nine defeated the McHenry Shamrocks last Sunday 7 to 3 at the Miller's Corner diamond to earn third place in the McHenry COiihty League. McHenry reached into the Junior Legion graduates last.Sunday and found some good young hall players to watch in the future. The Shamrocks will now hang up their spikes until another season rolls around. A.B. R. II. R. Freund--LF 3 0 1 L.. Freund--SS 5 1 2 R: Hiller--2B ' 5 ' 0 0 A. Jackson--CF 5 1 2 S. Miller--3B 5 0 2 W. The MCHS football season will open tomorrow (Friday) night on the McHenry Field as Wauconda High comes to town for a nonconference game. Fans who saw these two schools clash last season are looking for a real tough battle. Coach Paul Manli will be trotting out a McHenry team for the first time under his direction. After many nights of hard work with the boys, he will have a good chance to get a line on their ability under fire. A tour down to the field any afternoon will assure you that McHenry fans are eager for the kick-off. Cars line the field each practice session as anxious wellwishers watch the boys go through their paces. And, brother, you can see some spirited practicfe! Those Warriors are out there working. They realize that .superb condition and thoroughness in fundamentals are the secret to success. Wham! You could close your eyes and know all about those tackles. Coach Manli has only five lettermen on a squad that lacks depth. Some of .the boys will have^ to be brought along, Cast and it is evident that our line coach. Cliff Fulton, is getting them ready for action. Returning lettermen are Ed Caron, Denny Conway, Bob Hauser, Mark Vycital, and Carl Walker. We hate to report that injuries may keep Hauser and Vycital out of the opening game. Your reporter discussed a starting lineup with Coach Manli this week and found that he will not name the starters until game time Friday night. We also learned that just because a boy doesn't start it doesn't mean that he won't see plenty of action if he has team spirit. Modern football calls for frequent substitutions and many a boy comes off the bench to spark his team on the way to victory. McHenry fans can expect to see a rugged line with confidence in their ability to handle the situation. Injuries will cause some revamping in the backfield and different combinations will probably be tried in this first game. 1957 M.C.H.S. A field of 12 started and only two were unable to finish. Earl Seepe's total score of 296 was three shots ahead of Ralph Bennett, who was never at anytime more than two strokes off the pace until the 18th hole. In the final 18 holes, Seepe and Bennett were only off the fairways twice each and each one visited only one trap. Bennett suffered a three putt green on the 5th hole and a ball out of bounds in the sixth. This victory makes the third time Earle Seepe has been club champion. We hope to have a good turnout. This year the club will charge three dollars a couple. Members and their families have always had a wonderful time at . this picnic other years and we are sure that you can't find charcoal-broiled steaks with the trimmings for such a low price anywhere else. There will be a prize trap shoot after dinner. We have had a couple of hunters ask us about the shooting hours on doves and squirrels. Dove shooting starts one half hour before sunrise and ends at sunset. Squirrels may be shot from sunrise to sunset. Quite a few ducks have been seen going over lately. We saw about 50 or 60 black mallards one night last week. There ought to be some good shooting near potholes and ponds this fall. All the rain we had earlier in the season left a good number of small ponds in many low areas.
