I • , SATELLITES and RISING STABS ' On this, the 10th Annual presentation of the Football t Banquet, the two sponsoring clubs, the Kiwanis Club of Me- Henry Township and the McHenry Kiwanis Club wish to express their appreciation of the enduring support given by the entire community in paying tribute to the football team of the McHenry Community High School. The boy chosen the most outstanding player will be. honored especially this evening. The banquet also affords an opportunity to express gratitude to the coaches, teachers and other members of the faculty. All have had a hand in making good citizens as well as fine athletes of these boys. They have been taught that winning the game is not the only commendable result of the sport--the manner in which victory is won is more important than the victory itself. Attitude toward defeat. Credit for effort, the spirit of cooperation-- all are-indications of the development of an aduit approach to life. The cheerleaders, too, gain in understanding and charac- • ter as they lend their enthusiasm in success and their encouragement in defeat. They, too, are moving steadily toward adulthood.- In thiS""atomic age, when we are called upon to -try to understand rockets and satellites, jet propulsion and sound barriers, supersonic speed and spate travel-- within the space of a few short years, it is imperative for youth to see the world through adult eyes very early in life. Probably, never * before, has the young adult been catapulted right out of school into a world that seems to change by the hour. If sometimes, they seem to lose their perspective, be tolerant. Try to understand that the ability to meet drastic, sudden, changes with equanimity, is a quality that develops with experience. Trust their parents, their teachers, their^ heroes to keep their zest for living, their enthusiasm for fun within th bounds of normal behavior. Kiwanis says thank you to every.one present and to so many others who have made this banquet possible. This year the Kiwanis Trophy will have inscribed upon it the name of the tenth boy to be accorded this honor. Kiwanis established this custom to encourage, not only the boy so honored, but all of youth, to play a fair game on the football field and on the far wider field of the world which he is entering. , The "most valuable" player is chosen by those who knowx him best-- his own team-mates. His football prowess is not the only consideration. He is chosen for his sportsmanship, courage, congeniality and other qualities that will stand in his favor when he is beyond the control of his teachers. It is on boys like this that our future world depends.
