This work was done under the direction of our Child Welfare Chairman Harold Vycital, with >11 necessary funds being furnished by the post. This citation was the only one presented in the entire eleventh district and was given for "an outstanding and complete job". So many times people have wondered just wfiat the American Legion did with its income. This seems to be a good time to give a few figures. First of all; the Legion has many projects that take a good deal of money. AH of them concern the Welfare, of our community in sbfne way. On- this one project, which by the way goes on year after year, a total of $2847.50 was given by Post 491, with the money being spent in the following manner: Dipect aid to ne#dy local children, $643.06; contributions to local youth groups and homes, $411.50: contributions to local youth activities, $1732.44;' and donations of flags and school awards of $61.v A total of 496 children and youths were helped, or enjoyed, the largest portion of our donations. In All, it has been figured that 'a total of 2,023 children received some benefit fropi this project; either directly or because they participated in some sponsored group activity. In addition to the child welfare Work, Post 491 contributes heavily to many other projects, all of them concerned with our own local people. f * In order for the post to be able to do this work it needs, first of all, a large active membership. We are happy to announce that we already have more members signed up in advance for 1958 than our final 1957 membership total. It is very possible that Post 491 will soon be the largest post in the county. We are not very far from it how. Post 491 received another citation that will be of interest to the. community. That is the Americanism citation. Chairman of Americanism and largely responsible for our receiving this award is Mike Schoenholtz. It is a well known Wet that the largest organization in the world actively engaged in fighting communism is your American Legion. Each post has its Americanism committee and the sum of all these committees is a staggering force fighting for the American way of life. If you are an eligible veteran looking for a satisfactory social and community life, membership in the American Legion is your answer. 1 Pays to Advertise Thanksgiving Day Service There will be a celebration: # the Holy Eucharist at Paul'# Episcopal Mission at 11 a.m. On Thanksgiving day.
