Now we want action. This getting out one day, then having the props knocked out from under you for the next ten is no good. But, one of these days! Haven't seen a basketball game, but note that Cliff Fulton and Jack Thomas have the big and little Warriors off to a great start others who see thru you without looking at you. ' Anonymous. FR0SH350PHS HOLD FAST PACE IN TWO WEEK-END VICTORIES WARRIORS WIN HOME OPENER OYER WARREN .-a From all reports. Coach pulton lis getting scoring from all positions and has some big boys who can get possession off the boards. Enjoyed having Father Frank Miller drop in for a visit. Says he had to give up bowling. That's progress. We become too busy. The Woodstock Blue Streaks come to town this (Wednesday) evening for a conference battle with the Warriors. With many college students home the local gym should be packed to capacity. Quite sure we won't be able to see thjs game. Haven't heard how our old sparring partner, Doc Edinger. is getting along but doubt if he will be over for the game. We usually "encouraged" each other when Woodstock and McHenry met. But. in sports or any other walk of life "Doc" Edinger must rate as one of McHenry County's best sports. Knew there was something missing. After that Oklahoma game, our Boss Man, Bill Burfeindt, didn't phone with the query, "What's the matter w°ith Notre Dame?" The Warrior Frosh-Soph cage team continued their winning ways over the past week-end as the boys extended their unbeaten skein to three gabies, whining 41-29 at Grant Friday night, and subduing Warren here, at home Saturday night by a 52-%2 count. The-, pattern at Grant Friday evening was much the same as in the season opener at Wauconda. The first quarter saw the local lads build up a 13 to 7 lead with some exceptional play making. The second quarter saw each team post six points which put the half time count at 19 to 13. After a Warrior surge in the 3rd quarter, led by Jini Hester's five baskets, the game seemed to be under control. The boys were outscored in the final period, by the never say die Grant squad, but the damage done by the Warriors in the 3rd quarter was too much of a handicap. Beside Hester, a good game was turned in by Steinbach, Olson, and the Creighton brothers. In the Saturday attraction at the M.C.H.S. gym the Frosh-Soph squad, after a somewhat ragged first half, seemed to play their best ball of the young season. The Warrior squad totaled 34 points in an exciting second half while the defense only allowed 16 in the same span. Eight of the twelve man squad added to the scoring, with every squad member seeing active service. The local lads shot at a .533 clip in the second half, ending up the evening with a percentage of .374 for the entire game. It was a nigh scoring, interesting ball game all the way. McHenry jumped off to a 19-9 first quarter lead. The home fans really went Wild .as they saw their favorites begin to hit the baskets at a good clig. Warren outscored us in the second quarter but we still held a convincing 31-23 halftime lead. The Warriors scored 16 points, in the third quarter as djd Warren and the score stood at 47-39. In the final quarter. Warren got hot and hit for 24 points. However, McHenry also hit for 19 and won by 3 points. A late period full court press by Warren brought them within reach of Fulton's boys, but the advantage of McHenry was too much for Warren to overcome in the closing minutes. ^ All five of Warren's starters were returning regulars from last year so this victory was won against fine competition. Eleven violations were committed by the Warriors. (Violations are bad passes, held balls, fumbles. steps, aand double dribbles). The Warriors shot a respectable 42.6 percentage from the floor. Individual leaders were Bentz with 21 rebounds and Justen with 13. Denny Conway and Matt Eichinger led in assists with 6 and 5 respectively. Mark Vycital stole the ball 3 times from opposing players. Hie scoring was well spread out &s is illustrated in the box score. Eichinger led with 16 points. This was entirely a team victory and it prepared the Warriors and Coach Fulton for their first conference game against Woodstock on Wednesday, Nov. 27. A large turnout is expected for this second home game of the year. The team now is undefeated in 3 games. Score by Quarter* McHenry Grant McHenry 13 7 15 4 14 7--41 12--29 F.G. F.T. P.F. T. We rarely stop to think how lucky we are to be able to hunt for sport instead of just to fill the larder for ourselves and our families. Think it over. You may be surprised at your own conclusions. Two of our local archers. Ken Hamm of Lake Villa' and Vince Adams of McHenry, just returned from a successful hunt north of Iron River Michigan. They each bagged a deer. Personally, we would prefer a rifle for deer hunting, but it takes much more skill "and patience to get a deer with fi bow and arrow. Wriile we are on the subject of deer Shunting we would like to mention a small miracle that took place, .during our Ilinpis deer season this year. MCHSVARSITY EDGES GRANT IM OVERTIME Large Following Sees Fulton Five Win 41-39 Thriller ! by Ron Smith The McHenry Warriors traveled to Grant Friday night and returned home with their second consecutive victory, 41-39 in overtime. The boys gave "the fans and Coach Fulton a scare, however, as the game went into overtime. The Grant Bulldogs, after losing their six top men of last year, put up an unexpected, strong battle. Grant had our offense thoroughly scouted and played a terrific defensive game. Besides this, the Warriors were not ^hitting as well as they should have. They shot only 31.5 percent. ! The team violations also increased after the first game. At Grant the Warriors had 14 violations . as compared to 6 in their first game against Wauconda. McHenry started out goocf sinking 3 straight buckets. The first quarter score was 14 to 7, in favor of the Warriors. TTie second quarter was played at an even pace, each team scoring 8 points. Halftime score was McHenry, 22, Grant, 15. The third quarter was again even, each team scoring 14. The turning point for Grant occurred in the final quarter when they outscored us, 9 to 2. McHenry controlled the ball in the overtime and Mark Vycital scored the winning basket and Matt Eichinger added a free throw. Individual honors fell on Don Bentz and Matt Eichinger. Bentz led in rebounds with a total of 29, which is excellent. Eichinger led in three categories. He scored 17 points, had 4 assists, and recpvered the ball 5 times. A big factor in this victory however was the all-around depth of our ball club. Coach Fulton poured in substitutes by alternating 8 players, usually a certain player for a specific job, rebounds for rebounding, ball handlers for dribbling, and defensive players for defense.
