Arthritis is also known as rheumatism, the general term covering a group of symptomatically related conditions for which no other name has yet been found appropriate. Approximately seven million people are afflicted -with some form of arthritis or rheumatism in the United States, it is reported by the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society in Health Talk. One type of arthritis is called atrophic. In its later stages that type is characterized by an appearance of shrinkage of the affected parts. The atrophic form usually is seen in-persons who are slender, with flat chests, rather weak backs and prominent abdomens. The other type, hypertrophic arthritis, is identified by obvious swelling due to overgrowth of bone. Hypertrophic arthritis affects older people principally and may begin with bony swellings at the ends of the fingers; the most serious form involves the knees and hips. The general health is not so likely to be severely impaired. While early manifestations of the hypertrophic type of arthritis are noticed after an illness such as influenza or a cold, nevertheless an infected tooth, diseased tonsils, or diseases of the genitourinary tract may sometimes be associated. Fatigue, bad posture at work, mental worry, exposure to cold and dampness as well as a general lowered resistance, all may play a role in the development of arthritis. Constipation may be a symptom. * Persons who suffer from arthritis in one of its forms are nearly always tired. Rest is therefore important in treatment. Physical therapy is usually advantageous in arthritis and nearly all patients 1 find relief in the Application of heat to the affected joints. In some types, however, physical therapy may aggravate the con* dition. Diet is also important. The mind should be kept calm and free of worry, and particular care given to prevent deformity of joints. Research is still going on to determine the actual cause and cure of the many painful diseases affecting the joints. Some types affect the younger person, while others are painful manifestation^ of the process of growing old- Drugs have been developed that have been beneficial in certain types of arthritis, and research is constantly going forward to find the specific answer for the Ultimate alleviation of this oftentimes painful condition.
