Wgnder Lake News by Jane Dncey Nativity Evangelical Lutiuian * Church News • The Rev. Burton Schroeder has chosen the topic "A Child Shall Lead Them" for his sermon Sunday,, Jan. 12. Everyone is welcome to the church "where you are a stranger only once." The Luther League of the church will meet'at 7:30 p.m. Jan. for an important business fleeting, at which plans will be made to attend the winter rally of the Fox Valley District Luther League at Elgin on Sunday, Jan. 19. Hie • teachers and officers of the Sunday School will meet Tuesday evening, Jan. 14, at 7:30. This meeting will be the first in a series on the study of the new Sunday School material, arid £ethods for its teaching; The Altar guild of the church will meet Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 8. The program for the evening will be the showing of the pastor's latest addition to his col lection of religious pictures. All ladies are welcome to attend these meetings. The senior choir of the church meets every Thursday evening at 7:30 and anyone who enjoys sing- Wg is welcome to attend and help to lead the congregation in song. Christ The King Church News The first meeting of the Altar and Rosary sodality in the new year was held Thursday evening with the tentative schedule of the coming activities read by Rita Rice, president. A discussion followed of the initiation and break- /gst to be held Sunday, Feb. 2. at illillie's Pizza at the north end of the lake. It was decided that for the Sunday of Feb. 2 only, the sodality would receive Holy Communion at the 10 a.m. Mass, and then proceed to the breakfast. All the ladies who wish to attend are asked to make their reservations early. Also the monthly bake sale at the church will be discontinued during the winter £onths. Subscriptions to the Observer, the Catholic pub- ' lication of the Rockford diocese were stressed. The next Deanery tneeting will be held sometime in March. Father Vanderpool encouraged frnembership in the DCCW and reported on the progress of the building program. He also thanked %jrs. Nemsick, past president, and all the officers and chairmen of last year for the wonderful work they had accomplished. : "The buisness meeting was closed with a prayer, followed by a -fast and enjoyable game of "What's my Saint?" The ladies plan to have their Christmas party at this meeting. Cub Pack January Meeting There will be a pack meeting Tuesday. Jan. 21. at 8 p.m. at Harrison school. The theme of * the meeting is "Movie Makers" and original skits will be presented by Dens 2, 4, 6 and 8 pertaining to historical and present day movie np.king. Dens 3. 5, 7 and 9 will nave a display of articles which they have made relative to the making of movies. Awards will also be made at this meeting and the family and friends of the cubbers are invited to attend. Meeting Following'rtoie business meeting which will begini promptly at 8 p.m. a color niovie entitled "Midwest Holiday" will be shown at the PTA meeting at» Harrison school Tuesday, Jai||v 14. Mrs. Roy Swanson will talk about the scholarship fund, explaining what ft 1s and how it operates. The nominating committee will also be appointed at this meeting. Hostesses will be the mothers of • Mrs. Seeman's first grade. A tea towel shower for the kitchen at Harrison will be on th£ agenda Tuesday night. The "hotdog" program has put a greater burden on the kitchen supplies, which are running out. Each member is asked to bring a tea towel or accessory, such as sponges, dish cloths, soap etc. County Council Meets There will be a P.T.A. county council meeting at the grade school in Cary Thursday, Jan. 16, at 8 p.m. A car will be going from Wonder Lake and any one interested in attending is welcome to join, The meeting is not limited to officers or even P.T.A. members, but is open to any interested person. ' Audrey Batrjf^pnes of Wonderview subdiv||tjpn died unexpectedly in Chic%J^^|urday at the age of 43. He ws born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Sept. 27, 1914, and had lived in the Wonder Lake area for two and one half years. Surviving, ere'the widow, Clara; and five children, Mrs. Paul Dye, Of Wonder Lake^ and David, Mary, Audrey C Mhd Nicholas, all at home. Itepublic&n Women To Have Party The board of directors of the McHenry township . Republican Women's club had a luncheon meeting in McHenry Monday to make final plans for the card and bunco party which they will be hostesses at the American Legion hall in McHenry Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. Due to the fact that this is election year, quite a number of candidates will be present and will be introduced, but no speeches will be made by anyone. Hie evening will be completely social and represents the fund raising endeavor which the club puts on once a year in order to. carry the cost of the program. Refreshments of hors d'oeuvres and coffee will be served; prizes will be awarded at each table in addition to door prizes.' Th? entire community is welcome to participate. Advance ticket sales are progressing nicely,-according to Mrs. Wallace Carder, president Tickets may be obtained from Mrs. Carde in Hickory Falls or Mrs. B. R. Redman in Deep Spring Woods. The board also decided to have a dinner meeting for club members at the March meeting, place to be decided upon later. News Briefs Mrs. Walter Dean is recuperating nicely following surgery performed Jan. 2_ at the Memorial hospital for McHenry county. She will be coming home this weekend. Daughter Donna suffered internal injuries as the result of a sharp blow she presumably received while sledding. This unusual injury is helaing by itself and ual injury is healing by itself and Donna is on the restricted activity Mrs. Oscar Kongsgaard of Wonder Woods underwent surgery at the Memorial hospital for McHenry county Monday. She is the mother of Mrs. Edward O'Brien of White Oaks Bay. The community at Wonder Lake wishes her a speedy recovery. George Pilgrim, former resident of Deep Spring Woods No. 2, paid a visit at the Lake last Thursday from his home in Rocky River, Ohio. He reports the family fine, the baby girl walking. Christmas greetings from the Ted Rietesel family in Massachusetts tell of a prospective move to Jacksonville, Fla. for business reasons. So they must sell the Jiouse^they^buiit-and moved into only last June in Massachusetts. The Charles Cranes and the T. P. Mathews honored Dr. and Mrs. S. L. Ruggero with a party on their eleventh anniversary last Saturday night, .They had dinner at LaGreca's, complete with whipped cream anniversary sake, a corsage lor M^i-y^ggd a buttanniere for the doctor. The party went dancing at the Moose lodge in Woodstock afterwards. Master Gregory pickrum celebrated his third birthday Monday afternoon with a party for his friends in the neighborhood. Invited to partake-of the ice cream and cake were Mikie, Susie and Debbie Kremer, Larry and Jimmy Lennon, and Tommy and Leo Burns. Also present was Greg's sister, Karen Ann. Gail Wrede was surprised by a group of old friends invited to celebrate his birthday, Sunday. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Yates of Buckley, who are "tent neighbors" of the Wredes each summer on the Upper Peninsula, the Roy Norens, the Chase Koches, • formerly \ of Wooded Shores, Betty Selsdorf, the Shuji Kimuras of Crysl al. Play Cards for Memorial Hospital Mrs. Oiris Rasmussen was hostesss to the canasta group which plays for the benefit of the Memorial hospital for McHenry county at her Shore Hills home last Thursday. High score was held by Mrs. Victor Milbrandt. Four dollars was collected for the hospital building fund. Other ladies present were Mrs. Carl Jaeschke, Mrs. Robert Kiddell and Mrs. Anthony Weretka. The group will meet next at the Borne of Mrs. Kiddell,on Feb. 6. The Wooded .shores canasta group met at the home of Mrs. Clemence Grabovy last month. The ladies had a holiday gift exchange after the card party in which five dollars was collected for the Memorial hospital building fund. Mrs. Robert Behler and Mrs. Donald Michels had the high scores. Other players were Mrs. Richard Blarti/ Mrs. Fritz Grasser, Mrs. Walter Peterson, and Mrs. Victor Ddjliijrandt. Hie next meeting of the group will be Jan. 22, at the home of Mrs. Behler in Woodstock. Polio Benefit There will be a polio benefit card party Monday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. _ at Millie's Pizza place. There will be table prizes and refreshments. A highly successful benefit was held last year about this time, with a good turnout despite winter weather. Biting Dog Located The Jack Moores of Wonder Woods are breathing freely, again since the dog which bit daughter Sharon last Monday has been located and can be observed. 1"he veterinarian assumes the dog to be in good health, and anyway "Cookie" wiH not have to take the series of injections or anti rabies shots since the animal is identified. Dorothea Moore said the neighbors were so solicitous and helpful and she is grateful for their concern. Constable Elmer Murphy was most helpful in having the dog checked. are pastor Andersoh, who was 'formerly with the Bible church here, and Rev. Charles Svoboda, a young evangelist and bible teacher, who is the home missionary for the State of Illinois. Pastor Wright will start a teachers' class in the near future which will be held after prayer meeting each Wednesday night. This will be a regular course of study designed to help anyone interested in teaching Sunday School. Some Vandalism In Indian Ridge Children broke into a summer home on Mohawk Drive in Indian Ridge and had a snowball fight which caused minor damage to property. It has been asked that the parents observe their children more closely in order to avoid recurrence of these acts of vandalism, for which the culprits can be prosecuted. C of C To Elect Directors , At the Jan. 30 meeting of the Chamber of Commerce there will be an election of directors to fill the vacancies of the three retiring directors. Retiring are Dr. S. L. Ruggero, Allan Schimke and John VanKanegon having served a two year, term of office. The January meeting will mark the completion of two years of organization of the Wonder Lake Chamber of Commerce. A compiittee has been appointed to produce a slate of nominees for the election. Wonder Lake Bible Church News A dedication of the church has been scheduled for February 16. It is hoped by this time that the final work on the remodelling and f i n i s h i n g w i l l be c o m p l e t e d . Among the guests who will take part in the dedication ceremonies ' Deep Spring Woods No. 2 To Meet There will be a meeting of the board of directors of Deep Spring Woods No. 2 Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Jan. 12, in the office of T. P. Mathews in the Center. Plans for the coming year will be reviewed. Plans for letting work to be done this spring will be gotten underway. Harrison Basketball Harrison school will play its second conference game of basketball Friday, Jan. 10, in the school gym. Hie game which will be with Channel Lake of Antioch will start at 6:30 p.m. Admission is nominal and the public is invited to come and cheer. Happy birthday, too, to Linda Mills who celebrated her eighth with a party for twelve of her friends at her home in Wonder Woods last Saturday. The guests enjoyed games and dancing to recorded music. The Paul Vaculas had a wonderful surprise with the visit of son, Ronnie, who was home for the holidays. * Mrs. Henrietta Schau of Indian Ridge is home from the hospital again and she gives credit to the friends who sent cards and good wishes with playing a large part in her recovery.
