LEO M. YOUNG AUCTION McHenry State Bank, Clerking Jan. 20, the auxiliary of McHenry Post 491 held thetr regular monthly meeting, president Lauretta Homo presiding. Guest speakers for the evening were Harold Vycital, chairman Ernie Zimny, *bugle instructor, and John Zimny', drum instructor for the SAL Drum and Bugle Corp. They reported on the progress being made by the corp and what they hope to accomplish in the coming year. Their aim is to participate in as many parades as possible, including the National convention parade in Chicago. Also to enter the corp in competition when advisable. The auxiliary gave them a sizeable donation towards the purchase of new uniforms needed if they are to look their best when representing our post in parade. A marionette show is being sponsored by the SAL Drum and Bugle Corp to also help defray the expense of new uniforms. "Pinocchio" performed by the Reed Marionettes, will be presented Saturday, Feb. 8 at the McHenry high school auditorium ait 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, be sure to do so. It promises to be worthwhile entertainment for both adults and children. Dorothy Weichmann, junior activities chairman, gave a report on their meeting held Jan. 18. The girls made eightytwo tray favors for Downey hospital. At their next meeting, Feb. 22, Bonnie Wirfs will give a talk about George Washington and Janet Homo, will report on Abraham Lincoln. Ann Kane volunteered to write an essay to enter in the contest for the seniors, and Bonnie Einspar will write an entry for the juniors. Also a doll dressing contest for the juniors will be held. Any junior who would like to enter a doll in this contest, contact Dorothy Weichmann, 1137, A book on our Pan American country for this year, Honduras, will be presented to the public library. Ruth Mrachek, rehabilitation chairman, reported a bowling party was held at Downey hospital on Jan. 16 and the following members participated, Marie Howe, Ruth and George Mrachek, Skip Wirfs, Lillian Jensen, Dorothy Diedrich, Don Freund, I)ick Schmitt, and Delia and Nick Freund. " Donations were made to Care, the March of Dimes, and the Nine Point Program sponsored by the American Legion auxiliary. The average hired farm laborer in Illinois, without room and board, received $1.07 per hour during '57. Director Stfllman J. Stanard of the Illinois Department of Agriculture said workers averaged $1.06 per hour in 1956 and are now making almost as much money for one hour's work as they did for a day's labor in the midst of the depression. In April, 1933, the wage rate dipped to $1.15 per day, less than that of 1898. TOiLjCE PROMOTIONS Chief William H. Morris Announced creation of the new grade of corporal in the Illinois State Highway Police and the promotion of -39 members of the force, effective Jan. 16. The new grade of corporal, Morris said, will facilitate administrative work made necessary by enlargement of the force to 1100 men. Twentyseven .troopers were appointed corporals and 11 were elevated from trooper to Sergeant. One was promoted from sergeant io lieutenant. FLUORIDATED WATER Steelville recently' became the 100th community to begin using fluoridated water; Some five million Illinois residents are now drinking water, containing fluorides.
