DUNDEE WARRIORS 72-64 IN FINAL GAME ^•The old urge crept over us #j%we .toiired down to Crystal take Tuesday night to watch Qpr Warriors in the regional basketball tournament. iQwas a pleasant ride1 home after watching the boys beat take Park. While most of us experience changed moods during a game, we like to remember this one-|or the team work shown at certain stages! It is a great sight to watch fast, accurate passing that leads to scoring. V i' ILwas a pleasant evening all thelpway. As we neared the school and faced heavy traffic l' \vnich was clearing out after the Elgin-Harvard game, a policeman walked up to our car. Instead of the "Where tJie H- do you think you're going?" approach, he suggested that we drive around the block and come back - - - there would be room by that tiira. It worked. And we liked tteWman. Showing our press card to an, old acquaintance, Mr. Met- <5alf, brought the most courteous treatment one could be accorded. With our better half, We have attended many tournaments, but none where jve have been more favorably. impressed with the welcome accorded. FOKSTER TOURtCY GOES MTO SECOND ROUND NEXT SUNDAY WITH FAST GAMES LOOMING UP Entertainment Is Sure To Give You Some Good Laug ' Now comes a game with Elkin on Thursday night. That's a big order, but the mighty have been known to fall. We like to talk about the Tournament game 'cause that Dundee game left us not too team take a 42 to 19 trimming The twelfth annual C.O.F state . basketball tournament got off to a flying start last Sunday in the local high school gymnasium with seven winners and, seven others who must wait for another year to get a crack at the coveted first place trophies. In the fi^st game the Hampshire Heavies built up a steady lead, but . found themselves hanging on the ropes in. the last quarter. to stave • off the St. Joseph five from Elgin. Hampshire won it 44 to 38. The second game was an overtime battle as St. John's cf Johnsburg edged out the St Benedict Juniors of Peru 32 to 30. May had 20 points for Johns$>urg while Fuchs got two of his five baskets in the overtime St. Michael's Aurora Heavies served notice that (they pack a scoring punch as they clobbered St. Mary's of West Brooklyn 72 to 41. E. Dieser's 29 points were tops In the Ranger division, Sobieski Court of LaSalle had too many guns for West Brooklyn in a decisive 51 to 30 decision. McHenry fans were disappointed to see their Junior happy. The game got out of hand. Joe Etten had, reason to be both proud and gay last week after bowling a 286 game with the Foresters at McHenry Recreation. Congratulations, Joe. fWe'll give you a vote for the Hall of Fame. Edith Rand Is a great one for noting and giving credit to bowlers who pick up hard spues. This week she is real ha™y to report a "Big Four" 4-7-6-10 pickup by Marge Larson. Try it some time. Newspaper reports indicated that Barrington "stopped" Denny Freund when they beat - Wauconda in regional play. Yeah. They did all right! They held him to five field goals, but he picked up 15 free throws jfo^a 25 point total. That's stopping 'em! Read all about it! See separate" stories about the Forester tournament and special enter- . tainment. Games will get tougher as the tourney moves along and next Sunday night , should bring out some good ones. We have always found it grift sport to watch the grade school basketball tournament in the local high school. Coaches give a lot of time in the development of young players. Plan to look 'em over next Tuesday and Thursday mights. We must have forgotten something just know it. See you. next week. j SISTER DIES Mi's. John (Valeska) Budd, 48, sister, of Mrs. Howard Lockwood of McHenry, died • unexpectedly last Thursday, Feb. 27, in Bloomingdale. Services were held Monday from St. John's Lutheran church in Hebron. from the St. Gregory boys. Keenan's 20 points shoved the way. Next came ianother setback for a local team. St. Mary's Heavies were taken out of the running by St. Peter's of Virgil 53 to 41. Field goals were even, but the home team outtouled the visitors 22 to 12 and lost thegameat the free "throw line. In the final game of the evening, the St. Nicholas Heavies of Aurora pulled away gradually to a 72-60 win over Johns burg. Morrisse had 23 points, followed by Phillips with 22 for the winners a pretty good one-two punch. The crowd was well pleased with the entertainment features and look forward to another big time next Sunday night. Warriors traveled to Dundee last Friday to meet defeat 72-64 at the hands, of the Cardunals. The loss dropped the Warriors into third place tie with Dundee. It was our third straight conference defeat and left us with a 7-5 conference record. Crystal Lake and Barrington tied for the championship with identical 10-2 records. Our overall record is 18-7. Dundee juihped into an early 16-6 lead, but the boys bounced back to trail at the quarter 18- 17. In the second quarter, they outscored us 21 to 14. This was the turning point and decisive quarter of the game. In the second half each team scored 31 points, but Dundee had built up an 8 point lead at the half. The Warriors outshot the Cards 45.6-per cent to 43.1 percent from the floor. As far as individual battles go, a big one was expected between Hendricks and Eicljinger. Going into the c6ritest, Hendricks was second in the conference and Matt was fifth ranked in scoring. He trailed the big center from Dundee by 17 points (unofficial). Matt completely outshone Hendricks as he scored 22 points to Hendrick's 6. This puts Eichinger behind him by 1 point in the final tabulation, Matt also contributed 5 assists and 4 recoveries to the Warrior cause. Jim Justen contributed 15 points and Mark Vycital had 11. Don Bentz was the leading rebounder as he pulled down 11 off the boards. This game also marked the varsity debut of sophomore John Steinbach. Dundee's scoring was evenly divided among threfe men. Young had 21, Schuring had 19. and Struck (4th in conference scoring) had 14 points. The Cardunals controlled the offensive boards with their three big men, Hendricks, Struck, and Young, (two are 6' 4", and Hendricks is 6'3"). This game closed out a very fine conference season for Coach Fulton's boys. The goftlg got a little rugged in the last" few weeks, but the Warriors were always right in the game and never down. The regionals started at Move Into Semi- Finals Tonight Vs. Elgin High Flashing some of the best teamwork of the season, the Warrior basketball team defeated Lake Park 75 to 67 in the regional tournament at Crystal Lake Tuesday night..r Lake Park started off with a terrific shooting percentage in the first quarter, then faded in the second period when McHenry sailed ahead for a 38-28 lead at half time. The Warriors came out at the start of the second half and gave further evidence that intermission is not their dish. Their lead was cut in half right pronto, but some effective substitutions corrected the let-down. Mat Eichinger again led the way, scoring 26 points, and found a worthy running mate in John Steinbach. This was John's second appearance in varsity togs and the adjustment was remarkable. He contributed 20 points besides turning in a fine team effort. Lake Park had a big whopper named Christianson who led their scoring with 21 points besides proving quite a blockade in McHenry efforts under the boards. And they had a boy named Reeves with a jump shot that kept the Warriors hustling right up to the final minute. --McHenry Recreation-- - Tuesday Nite 39ers: L. Cairns, 451; J. Freund, 438; L.
