McHENBY PLAINDEALER i McHenry didn't win the reional basketball tournament, ut you would have thought $he boys were uncrowned jphamps if you had heard the jpvaiion given them in the Crystal Lake gym after throwing a real scare into a highly ffted Elgin five. '% With some real fancy shoots mg, the Warriors either led •,§he Elgin Maroons or stayed fight close until the final three - Tninutes of the game. By that iime the Warriors were wear- , uig down under the; terrific v Strain of battling a big team. J1 Trying to control rebounds :t) .against a 6*9" .center and some jDther shorties of about 6*5" ftature can make a srtn&ller team a bit weary. FINAL NEXT SUNDAY IK C.O.F. BASKETBALL TOURNEY; EXPECT FULL HOUSE FOR EVENING SHOW Battle Will Be On For Honors In All Divisions We were very proud of the $4am in this final game of the Mason. They showed real class. You can see this same t£am on the home floor next Sunday, playing under the local Forester banner in the state tournament. It will probably be the last time this group will be together as a unit. '* Better get your tickets for the Rotary-sponsored athletic banquet right away. This invades basketball and wrestling squads of MCHS. And the main decoration will be our nice litt! e cheerleaders. We thought Joe Frett would be President some day! At a recent meeting of the county baseball league, Joe was chosen to lead the group for the Coming year. Joe Feffer will be the new secretary-treasurer of the county league, a post held so efficiently by Jess Armstrong Of Algonquin for many years. Jess is stepping out of baseball this year, but you can bet he will drift around to watch the games. We hear that Eddie Jackson is busy getting a team together in Woodstock for entry in . . _ . , 'the county league. Woodstock W1*h 7 baskets and 16 out of Good crowds turned out last Sunday to see the second round of the Forrester basketball tournament in the local gym. There was action galore. In the first game of the day St. Peter's of Virgil pulled away to an early ' lead and went on to win from Aurora (O.L.G.C.) 51 to 35, Everybody got into thie scoring act, but Busch hit the nets for a 21- point total to lead the way. The second game brought the Juniors into action and this found Johnsburg taking St. Gregory of Chicago 38 to 28. It was Johnsburg 10 to 3 in the first period, then came a reversal of form as Hinterberger brought his mates to a 17-15 half time lead by sinking six field goals. The Johnsburg boys gained their edge in the third period, outscoring the opposition 15 to 3. May again led the point-making department with 18 points. The third game was plain murder. The St. Anne heavies of Moline used six men with equal scoring ability to bury St. Michael's of Aurora 80 to 34. Just a breeze. Next the spot light switched to the Ranger division where McHenry had too: many good shots for St. Benedicts of Peru. Paul Steffan's 16 points led the way to a 58-32 victory that saw a flock of players get into action. The Heavies were back on the^floor and some high scoring went into the records. Hampshire beat St. Nickolas of Aurora 72-61 as free throws made the difference. Such shooting you hardly^ see "no more" except in westerns. McHenry trotted out a strong Senior team, made up of the '58 high school varsity, to breeze along to a 77-44 victory over St. John's of Johnsburg. Jim Huemann, star of the '57 high school squad, gave it a good try witjfi 17 points for Johnsburg, but the odds were too great. Bentz hit the nets for 19 points. After a close first half in the final game of the day, St. Peter's of Virgil pulled away to a 73-48 win over the St. Anne five from Moline. One new member was voted into the club. He was Frank Gregory. In order to become a member of this club, a person must first attend three consecutive meetings to make sure he wants to be a member and in order for the club to be sure he is a desireable person. Then the Board of Directors votes ,on whether or not he is accepted. The new member must pay a $5.00 initiation fee and he must also join the National Hot Rod Association, a nation-wide organization of which our club is becoming a chartered member. A committee is being formed to find out information OIL how our club can join the Civil Defense. Our club is interested in running a safety check in the near future in McHenry. Elgin and the Warriors each scored 12 points in the third period. With 4 minutes gone, Elgin pulled a very surprising thing as theyf, stalled away about 3 minutes of the third period.
