Let it te recorded here and now that we were the last person in Mc- Henjry to see a robin this spring. • \ A heck of a lot more people turned out for Easter than election day,; but the weather man seemed to favor the politicians. -r-John Dreymillgr thinks he -and his • partner in potatoes (Frank Kempfer) are getting too much credit. Little did we know of the talents of "Muggs" and Vaughn Jones in the delicate art of flower growing. Watch for their entries in the next flower and garden show. John says the boys have a certain /touch that sets them apart.' * Suppose you remember the dinner and program' being Sponsored by the Loyal Order of Moose for the grade school basketball teams. It's tonight (l^hursday)! ^e have tlje county baseball league schedule set up in a fashion and space this week fco.jnake it handy for iyou fans to clip it out' for future reference. . •This is the time of the year trhen if somebody tells you to go,, fly a kite .you might give i<f a try. • "Torchy" Krause was telling that after having some teeth pulled he couldn't talk. Now, that's not funny! Saw Gus Moritz the other day and found him ready for another baseball season. Gus Made jigreat comeback after a serious injury. If his favorite Milwaukee. Braves can come back with the same old fight, you can expect to see them facing the White Sox next fall. - Jimmy Lennon has worried since last fall that the Braves may let down after winning the World Series. Not that they would slow down purposely. It's just that they aren't quite as hungry after teaching the heights. A hunger for victory and top honors fin^..athletes on to greater efforts.' We dunno. The Braves are still the team to beat in the National League. Richard and Elsie Kaeser, who also hang their hats in a home in Huemann's Subdivision, added a note that they get together quite often with Mr. and Mrs. Math Laures. A c o l u m n c a l l e dv " T h e R e e l Sfory" had this to say: "Biggest blue taken at; the pier was an 8-pound, 6-ounce speciman that was whipped by Betty Laures on 15-pound test line. The lunker struck a feather lure and strip." * Outdoors By J»ck Walsh Fishing, in general, has been pretty good. Last week's rain seems to have helped the situation considerably. * Meyer's Bay has beeft producing some big bluegills and a few nice bass. Many of the other lakes were pretty good last week. Crappie fishing has started in some of the channels, but it will be a while before they move in in great =. numbers. The smelt are starting to run in Waukegan. Things are still pretty slow and the biggest catch known to us so far was seventy-five. Your best bet for up to the minute information concerning the smelt run is to contact one ; of the Waukegan sport stores or listen to the news on W.K.R.S. We think the .smelt fishing will reach its peak about the middle or end of next week. Well, it doesn't take long for news to travel. The banks of Boone Creek are getting to be Well-trod by trout fishermen. A few nice trout were caught this week, but - we heard of nothing spectacular. The most popular bait Is worms and you have a hard time keeping the suckers and chubs off your hook. Lake Region Shorts Car Club • Manager Larry Stilling asks jthat we let you baseball players know that the Shamrocks will start practice next Sunday at 1 P.M. Get out your spikes and glove. f Our high school baseball team will travel to Woodstock on Friday afternoon of this week, then go to Zion next Tuesday. Friday, April 18, Crystal Lake will be here. These meetings are still being held at club Lilymoor on Wednesday nights at 7:30 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 9.15. LHrte I^aguera in ?«tir family or neighborhood are excellent pie- ' ' lore subject material. The clej^iVsharp whack as wood meets, leather--is there any Other |<rabd that's a surer sign of smng? It's baseball time aroUjfflpthe country and nb picture-taker has to wait for the big stadium game to get exciting action shots. There's plenty of picture material awaiting you on the Little League circuit at any neighborhood park, playground or empty lot. -jf If your'household boasts a young mSrt in a visored cap wearing a baseball mitt, just follow Ihim almost /my Saturday morning. Otherwise, amble over to the nearest park or school playground and follow the sound of high-pitched voices until you're right in the midst of a game in action. There it is---every bit as good for snapshooting as what you see on a large stadium diamond --the pitcher winding up and exploding into a pitch, the stance of the batter, the swipe at the ball, the quick movement of the players, the roar of the spectators, the grim-faced referee, the bench filled with eager young "replacements." A word about camera equipment first: it isn't even necessary to have a camera with a fast shutter unless you're planning to. concentrate on the running action of the game. Your trusty box camera can actually do wonders with the material at hand, for a speed of l/25th of a second is all you need to catch the dramatic highlights of the play. Witli a simple camera, how* ever, you'll do well to use your1 flash equipment even if there's a bright sun in the sky* Flash will increase the effective speed of your shutter to the point where it's about the equivalent of 1/100th of a 'second-- or fast enotigh to catch all the action of your subjects The way you handle your camera can make a world of difference to- the Anal prints. This is no time to have to fuss with adjustments -- so haVe fresh film in your camera, exposure and distance pre-set for the general prevailing conditions. Try to shoot from waist level, if you can. That way, you won't miss any of the fast action which may be over by the time you raise the'camera to your eye. --John Van Guilder W.C.O.F.
