Congratulations, Mr. Whiting. You have covered a lot of ground. We are told that the Mc* Henry Shamrocks will "need more players to put a contending team oA the field when the season opens. If you are a ball player, get.out there and find a place on the team. Did you clip out that County League schedule? The season starts a week from next Sunday with McHenry at Algoh quin and the Elgin V.F.W. at Johnsburg. Richmond will be at home to welcome Woodstock back into the league. It will make no difference who is first to the moon. The United States will be there first with Foreign Aid. --Ott Shewmaker Gulf Breeze Bart Yegge tells us the McHenry Pony League managers iriet this week and selected players for the coming season He promises a complete report next week. FROSH-SOPH NINE BEATS WOODSTOCK 8-1 IN CONFERENCE ^[MiHiiiiiiiiiiiiiaiuuwtMaiminiiiuM t Outdoors By Jack Walsh Last week Meyers Bay was a hot-spot for largemouth bass. The largest of the bass taken weighed approximately four and one-half pounds. Many more bass of the two and three pound class were also taken. The "bait of the week" was the Midget Cisco Kid. Many other small plugs were used with equal results. Crappie fishing has been pretty good in some' 'parts of Fox Lake. We have found through experimenting and plain old stubbornness that one of the best crappie lures for a fly rod is a small silver ice fishing spoon with a red, and white underside. Attach a tiny strip of white pork rind or a piece of chamois cut to a tiny wedge to the hook. Fish it just fast enough to make the strip flutter a , bit. This is a surefir0 cranoie killer. The bluegill situation is fair, but picking up steadily. Red worms, weedworms. waxworhis. co,rn borers and other ice fishing baits should be fished slowly and close to the bottom for best results at this particular time of the year. Black gnats and other dark colored wet flies are a good bet now. For an additional inducement for the fish, try adding a small worm tq the hook of your fly. This sometimes works when everything else fails. Grass Lake is producing j quite a few bullheads and cat-1 fish. They are good scrappers \ and not too hard to catch. At this time of year a nice mess of bullheads can taste pretty good if they are fixed properly Fishing in general is getting ijetter--every--day--so-^don-t--bo- McHenry Tie Rods ~ The McHenry Tie-Rods, hot rod clQb held its regular weekly meeting on April 8, -at 8:15 at the club garage. Due to a peculiar arrangement of this year's schedule, the game was not considered a conference battle. Because of an unusual number of postponements in recent years, the conference directors have set up a different type of schedule. The Warriors will play each conference team twice during the regular season (12 games) but only 6 of these games will be considered league contests. One game with each team will be counted and each team will have 3 home games and 3 away games. The other games will simply be exhibitions, just as non-conference games are. Roger Benson led the hitting as he had 2 for 3, including a double. Bill Thorp, Barrington's hitting star, had 2 hits to lead the Bronchos. ' Paul Lahti, their pitcher, had excellent control as he walked none and struck out 4 batters. NURSERY INSPECTORS Inspectors from the Illinois^ Agriculture Department are cracking down one sale of il-. legal nursery stock and unl i c e n s e d d e a l e r s . D i r e c t o r Stillman J. Stanard said some dealers are ignoring the state law requiring-state certificates to operate. The certificates are issued free by the department. Eight inspectors are visiting dealers,' grocers, department store and garden center operators through the state to letermine whether they are operating within the law. The approaching • spring planting season increases the chance of diseased plants being shipped into the state and transported from one area of Illinois to another, Stanard said. Purchasers are urged to, be sure that each shrub, tree, evergreen, rosebush, perennial or other nursery stock they receive from an Illinois dealer carries a department inspection certificate. Plants shipped in interstate commerce must bear an inspection tag from the state of origin.
