\ L R~] •:, A TOE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER Lest we forget. Last week we told you that the Johnsburg "Hgers would be at home to the Elgin1 V.F.W. for the league opener next Sunday. Hold the phone! There has been a change. The Tigers will travel to Elgin next Sunday. L£. ;^The above change has been w inade to provide the additional attraction of a ball game when carnival time rolls around at Johnsburg. Larry Stilling will lead the Shamrocks down to Algonquin next Sunday for their first test under fire in the 1958 season. The first games will show the weak spots in the league, but we hope to see some balance in power. Close games bring out better crowds and good crowds are needed to keep the wheels in motion. After many years of commendable efforts in managing American Legion baseball in McHenry. Thomas F. Bolger has turned the job over to Jack Thomas. Tom has placed Legion baseball on a high standard and is turning the job over to a man whom he feels has the ability to teach .the boys and command their J respect. Jack Vick. another member of the MCHS staff, has promised to assist in the program. Another good man. Sure, we wanted rain! Now on this gloomy, rainy Wednesday we feel like headin' for the hay mow for an all-day snooze. But, the sun will shine one day and the humidity will hang heavy over our heads and we will complain some more about the weather. On one recent sunny morning we came down town and greeted the first person we met with, "Well, this is a beautiful ihorning." The old tra-la in our voice. But, we met with the reply, "Yeah, but what ,good does the sun do us? It stays awful cold." V •• .• After a couple- of - more approaches to tffld*'agreement on the day, we switched and greeted a fellow with, "It stays awful cool, doesn't it?" That did It! "Whadya expect this time ' of the year?", came the swift reply. Schaefer walked and advanced to second wh&n the Zion, catcher and pitcher collided attempting to catch Justen's sacrifice bunt. Both runners advanced on Smith's sacrifice bunt. Jim Hester wasnt in his usual form in the strikeout department, but with' consistent low and tantalizing pitches to his battery mate, he pitched his second one-hitter of the season. Jim's teammates backed him up beautifully with two doubly plays at the right times and missed two more 'by inches to keep Crystal Lake scoreless for six innings. - McHenry began its scoring in the first inning with Bob Gates getting to base on an ->rror. After stealing second, a 'ine drive single by Danny Sompel put men on first and second. A well executed drag bunt by John Gates caused pandemonium in the infield, permitting Bob Gates arijd Somple to score. Jim Hester and Harry Hettermann • both got bases on balls loading the bases. On a 3-2 pitch Jack Yegge slammed a triple deep into center field driving in Hester, Gates and Hettermann. With two out, Mike Ganert beat out a slow roller to first, after which a line drive triple to right field by Bob Gates, drove in Yegge and Ganert to conclude a seven run first inning. McHenry scored again in the second inning when an error gave Danny Sompel a free base, and a sharp 'drive over second by Bill Oefflirtg put men on both second and third. A deep high fly to center off the bat. of John Gates was dropped, bringing in Somoel and Oeffling for the two final McHenry runs for the afternoon. Batting honors went to Bob Gates with 2 for 3 times at bat which included a single and a triple. Crystal Lake's lone run came in the seventh inning on an error which had the makings of a sensational double' play only_ to, be b^pkeit up by the. bright sun. Secohd Straight f ^ , Conference Win. \Iff&ibMac's Nine 'W by Ron Smith S. fii . » ' ; Coach McCracken's boys seem to have a knaack of winning the games that count in the conference race. They proved this theory by shipping (Crystal ; Lake ; 10-3 at/ home last Friday. Their record is now 2-2 but it is 2-0 in conference play. The win knocked the Lakers out of a first place tie with us. ; The Warriors agaifi jumped out in front/in the first inning a; they hawf in all of their games, but on this occasion held the lead throughout the contest. „ Crystal Lake took the lead as Anderson reached first on an error, Reinert walked, and big Gilbert lined a triple oyer Bentz's head in ' centerfield. Bujak,' who started and finish* ed, then walked 2 to load the bases, but struck^ out the side to get out of the jam. McHenry bounced back with five runs in their half of the first. Jack Schaefer reached base on an error by the shortstop to lead off the rally. Jim Justen walked and Rog&r1 Benson reached first when the third baseman, Hunt1, ? juggled his grounder. With-the bastis loaded, Ron Smith walked to force in a run. Don Bentz then unleashed a tremendous litter over the centerfielder's head and circled the j bases for ^ a grand slam home run. Add Three More - We added three more runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. Ray Bujak singled and Jack Schaefer doubled to start it off. Justen's sacrifice fly brought one run home. Benson's grounder brought Schaefer home, and whejjut Benson reached third becauseof erratic throwing by Lake^ infielders, he scored ,Jl6n Smith's fielder's choice. ? Crystal Lake scored t^eir final run in the fifth on a sinr^e, an error by the" left fielder, and three infield oilts. We scored again in the sixth on a walk, stolen base, and ap error. » ' Rogeijfc Benson smashed <ja fast ball over the left fielder's head in the seventh and scdred e a s i l y f o r M c H e n r y s e c o n d home run of the driy. ' Don Bentz contributed 2 hits to our attack, including his home run. Ray Bujak pitched excellent ball after & shaky start in the first. Ray strpcft out 10 and, walked 5.., He gave up only one earned run. ; *; , The interesting factor about this game was that we finally unloaded some power from two of our big guys. Another good sign was the pitching performance,. The team looks improved each game thus far. The Warriors played Woodstock on Tuesday, April 22 at home and travelled to Dundee on Wednesday. Both of these games are non-conference. McHenry AB R H RBI Schaefer, ss 3 2 1 0 Justen, lb 2 1 0 1 Benson, c 4 3 1 1 R. It seemed as if everybody and his grandmother were out fishing. We pulled into a likely looking spot, let the . Anchor down and proceeded to try our luck. We had boated a nice rock bass and a goodsized bullhead when one of those "pleasure crafts" came whizzing by. 'There happened to be a good number of enraged fishermen anchored off that particular strip of shoreline and the other shore as well as the middle of the lake were relatively free of fishing boats. This can become quite exasperating if it keeps up all afternoon. Qn behalf of ourselves and other peace-loving fishermen we ask one favor of those people owning fast boats, and who have every right to use them. Please be a little more considerate of small , boats and fishermen. A little common sense and decency is one of the best promoters of good will. Later Sunday evening we located a school of bluegills. They swirled and struck short at every cast. Either they were too anxious or just playing around, but it was a little disheartening for a while. The channels at Dutch Creek and Slough Bay have been p r e t t y good s p o t s f o r bluegills and crappies lately.
