•*-- Four I " ' HONOR ACCOUNTANT WARRIOR BASEBALL TEAM LOSES 2-1 TO WOODSTOCK by Ron Smith MCHENRY RECREATION m Si 1958 Speaking of signs of the .times, one of our little helpers reported seeing a sign in front o^ a church in Grayslake that read "Thou Shalt Not Park." Guess our Green Street isn't „ the only place where parking problems fcrise. J 17 This same little helper saw ^ a gravel truck with a sign, ^'. *!]Have Gravel, Will Travel." And, when we viewed a crop of dandelions as a sure sign of spring, another helper gave us a happy thought --* "You know, I don't mind dandelions. The children have so much fun picking them." Made' us think that life could he beautiful for all of us if we could see many things in the same light. On the sports side, we find the Shamrocks off to a much better start than the White Sox. The "Micks" won thejr opener at Algonquin with some very good early season pitchi ing by Litwin and Lincoln. «Litwin was quite a pitcher in high school and Legion ball ill McHenry while Lincoln was going great guns for Wauconda. They should r.idke a good pfcir for the. Shamrocks. Joe Frett and his Tigers were rained out so will have • to wait for a trip next Sunday to-Dundee before getting a line On their strength. Oh, they always have a ball team! Last year Joe started without much reserve strength, but that situatioh cleared up and the team went great guns. Larry Stilling \ wants you baseball fans to know that the game here % next Sunday will start at 1 o'clock. This is the first home game and the team is quite anxious for a good crowd. TTie sudden death of Verne Harrison left us thinking back through the years when we both grew up on McHenry's West Side. Verne was younger, but used to tag us on pigeon hunts and- such great adventures. IvVSjf^ie wa&in glory back in the days when he clerked for "Muggs." Some tall yarns went out of that store! He went too, soon. Our sympathy goes to chosfe he left on this earth. And Jim Perkins lost his old sidekick, Hughie Morris. They •were a great team -- always ready- for gome good natured fun.. < Coach McCracken's Warriors lost another non - conference baseball game by a score of 2-1 against Woodstock on Tuesday, April 22. We had prevously defeated this same team 6-4 in conference play. The loss was a heart-breaker for John Steinbach,- young sophomore pitcher who pitched a fine ball game. John walked 4 and struck out 10 -and gave up only 1 earned run. Carl Moraw, the Woodstock pitcher, also pitched excellent baseball. The Blue Streaks jumped off to a 1-0 lead in the second on a walk and 2 singles. The Warriors tied the score in t;he third as Schaefer was hit by a pitch, R. Smith was safe on an error, Petersen walked, and, Don Bentz singled. Tile winning run was scored -5n the fourth on a single by Moraw, a walk, a stolen base, and bad throw on an attempted pickoff play by Steinbach. Outside of the fine pitching displayed by both teams, two men accounted for all of our hits to highlight the individual batting. Don Bentz had 3 hits 'n 3 times at bat, including an RBI, and Tom Roti contributed a single and double. t Moraw, Brown and Freund had the Woodstock hits. Our record is now 2-:3 but it is still 2-0 in conference play. The Warriors tangle with Barrington and Dundee this week in crucial Conference battles. DAILY PINUS: . Litwin also had three hits and a walk to his credit in five trips to the plate. A Wauconda man named Lincoln stepped in for Litwin with the bases loaded in the seventh and was very impressive in setting down the batters the rest of the way. Litwin lost his control in the fourth when Algonquin scored their two runs, but recovered in good shape. Bob Nolan slammed out a, tremendous 3-bagger to lead o f f t h e M c H e n r y s i x t h a n d scored the first run for his team. From there on to the finish the ' Shamrocks kept swinging away against Wilbrandt and Liebert to put the game away. Nickel doubled to start the eighth and. scored the winning run on a similar blow by Pierce. Mandy's of Elgin will be here next Sunday and game time has been set up to 1 o'clock.
