P. Flanders, 76, who died at his home near Ringwood Sunday night. Peter W. Frett, who travels through southern Illinois and Iowa buying poultry and eggs, finds that this year tractors are standing idle while horses are being purchased to work on farms. The reason for this is that the farmers have no money to buy oil and gas for the tractors, but that they can make loans for money to buy horses. to pursue his studies in- the aviation course. Miss Jean Nickels who will become the bride of John Reed on May 6, was guest of honor at a bridal shower at Legion hall Wednesday evening, with TWENTY7FIVE YEARS AGO From Issue of May 11, 1933 Continuous rains in this locality are the cause of excessive high water in Fox river and the lakes region, where the water has reached a mark not registered since the floods of 1924 and '25. Farm lands,. as well as low l a n d s , a r e f l o o d e d a n d t h e water of the Fox river is overflowing seawalls, filling basements and covering the lawns of the surhmer homes along the shores. Farmers along the river report many acres of plow land under water and useless for a crop this year. At Dutch Creek, north of McHenry, . more than 100 acres are under water and the creek, which is never more than 15 feet wide, is now swollen to cover a half mile in width. AIRBORNE DECTION Illinois may become the first state to use an "airborne detection" program to guard its citizens .against the devastating effects of a possible enemy nuclear attack.. Arthur E. Abney, director of the Illinois Department of Aeronautics, said steps are being taken to develop _a .state-wide air monitoring system to control effects of radioactive fallout The system would supplement organized ground civil defense , units.
