U/oJZAJI* Hie telephone calls have been different this week. Cub fans must have had their phones disconnected. Joe May, a Sox fan, called to see if we should send our sympathy to the fans who were so gay only a week ago. No. We have no desire to rub it ~inr right now. Well, let's say we have the desire, but can't pop off too much until our Sox get some runs for their pitchers. SHAMROCKS WIN THIRD IN ROW IN COUNTY LOOP Larry Stilling lias his Shamrocks off to a flying start in the county baseball league with three straight wins and no defeats. 'Next Sunday the Shamrocks travel to Woodstock where they may have their hands full. Eddie Jackson is managing the Woodstock team and those Jackson boys have done more winning than losing along their athletic trail The Johnsburg Tigers will be at home to Algonquin next Sunday for their first home game of the season. This should bring out a good crowd. Johnsburg dropped a 6 to 3 game at Richmond last Sunday in their first game of the year. Rain took them out of play the previous two weeks. Much like a team we could name in the American League, the Tigers left too many runners stranded. Getting 3 runs on 13 hits doesn't sound like the Tigers we have known. Stan Musial and Dick Weber made news the same day. Musial made hit number 3000. But, let's tell you about our local hero. It happened in the softball league. Hans Behnke was the pitcher as Weber heard the umpire call "strike two." Now, the story goes that Hans throws a "knuckler" (a 16" ball, mind you.) Whatever Hans tossed up, our hero froze in his tracks , and took a third strike. . Weber could not believe it happened And turned to the ump to tell him it' couldn't be so--"I've 'been in this league six years and never struck out" Said the ump, "You just did now, young fellow. Go and sit down." No doubt, Weber's sympathizers will be reminding him of this historic incident all season! Beat Hebron 9-2; Jaskot Hits Home Run In Big Sixth The undefeated - McHenry Shamrocks won their third straight county ^league baseball game last Sunday with a decisive 9 to 2 victory over Hebron on the home diamond. Litwin and Smith, opposing pitchers, were fairly (dose in the statistical department, but kept 10 hits scattered while Smith gave up some distance blows with men on base. It is also noted that Smith's support was not of the air tight variety. The Shamrocks picked up a run in the second when an error and stolen base set Bob Nolan up for a sacrifice fly by Nickels. With one out in the fifth, John Knox was hit by a pitched ball Becknell was safe on an error at third. A walk to Nolan and a three base blow to left center by Nickels gave the home team 3 more runs and a 44) lead. The.home boys put across 4 more runs in the sixth as Herb Baker was safe on an error. Knox singled, Becknell walked and Jaskot homered deep into left field. Hebron put across their two runs in the seventh after two were out. An error and two singles did the trick. McHenry's final run came in the seventh when Joe Stanek singled and Chuck Pierce hit a three-bagger. The Shamrocks ran wild, stealing 8 bases during the game; Becknell had 4, Nolan 2 and Stanek and Baker one each. Next Sunday the Shamrocks travel to Woodstock. % Outdoors By Jmek Walsh Mother of small boy to child psychiatrist: "Well, I don't know whether or not HE feels insecure, but everybody else in the neighborhood certainly does. Dave and Bud Gendy had a stroke of good luck last week. They both landed bass that tipped the scales at a little over four and a half pounds. That is pretty big bass to play with, but those two boys have had plenty of experience. Becker's Smokey is still going strong. He took a second place in the field trials at the Wing and Fin Club last Saturday. This dog is still a youngster j and has had three placements in the last three trials he was entered in. If you are interested in field trials and good dogs, why not plan to attend the German Shorthair Trials at the Wing and Fin this Sunday, May 18. Hie trials will include Puppy, Derby, and All-age classes. It is really interesting to watch the trainers put their dogs through the paces. Fishing is getting better every day. Crappies and bullheads are being cdught all over the Chain O'Lakes, especially in the channels and bays. The bass are biting good, but are just beginning to spawn so the best bass fishing is yet to come. Some big bluegills are being caught in the channels iand creeks. They are few and far between, but when you get one on you know you have a fish. Lake Region Car Club Happiness seldom travels in a crowd, .but thrives in a coti tage. % --Anonymous. Gene had 75 strokes till the last par 3 hole. His drive was 20 feet to the reft of the hole, and he needed the next shot to qualify him to Champaign. The green was very tricky and he missed the shot. Next year Gene should qualify, providing he practices this summer. Other boys who also went t o t h e t o u r n a m e n t , w e r e D i c k S m i t h , Bob V a u p e l l , a n d Dan Baldino. Dick Smith shot a 41-44 for an 85. Dick could play better golf and, with a little more practice and effort, should have no trouble in qualifying next year. Bob Vaupell, only a freshman, is playing very good golf. He shot a 45- 41. Bob, being nervous for the first few holes, had some trouble, but came back very well with a 41. Bob should be a good golfer in the years to come. Dan Baldino shot a 44- 45 for an 89. This is Dan's first year of competition, and he is doing very well. He also should do well next year. Besides these five boys, there are two others always in contention of taking away their position. One is promising freshman, Gary Adams. Jim Hester had a little difficulty finding'the plate in the second inning due to a sore arm and was replaced by Jack Adams. Jack's performance was highly commendable as he pitched six innings' pf no-hit, no-run ball. In the first inning Bob Hiller and Danny Sompel drew walks. A hard hit ball through the pitcher's box by Bill. Oeffling drove in Hiller and Sompel. Bi0 had a clean steal to second and was driven „in by John Gates who singled to short right to conclude a three run first. McHenry scored another run in the third, inning when' a lined double off the bat of Bill Oeffling, put him in scoring position and scored later on a single by Mike Ganert. The fourth began with a double into center field by Jack Yegge who was driven home by a tfiple off the thundering bat of Jack Adams. In the fifth, Danny Sompel was issued another walk and made a clean steal to second. Oeffling, getting his third hit of the day, drove Sompel in to tally. Oeffling stole second and was later driven in by a sharp single into center field by John Gates'. With tremendous bursts- of speed, Gates stole second and third easily and scored on Harry Hetterman's single to short right, thus scoring three runs and concluding McHenry's scoring for the afternoon. Batting honors went to Bill Oeffling with 3 for 3 times at bat and John Gates with 2 for 3 times at bat.
