Stratton that an estimated ten-and-one-half million out-of-state visitors spent 1958 vacations in Illinois and left an estimated eight hundred million dollars in the cash registers of Illinois merchants. The official estimates were prepared by Carl G. Hodges, supervisor of the Illinois Departmental Information Service. He said, "Estimates for 1958 are slightly above those made last year, when 9Ms million visitors spent 775 million dollars vyithin our borders. We arrive at our totals only after conferences and correspondence with dozens of experts in the travel field." Hodges pointed out that in no state in the nation is tourist promotion lower than sixth in the economy. He said if any city should attract an extra dozen visitors per day for a year it would be equivalent to landing a new factory with a payroll of a hundred thousand dollars. "That is the reason," Hodges said, "why there is so much competition for the tourist dollar." Unfortunately, nothing can be done to put back in condition the many trees which were whipped by the storm. It will be many a day before results of the storm's fury can be forgotten locally. As thousands braved the chilly weather last Sunday to thrill to the sight of skilled ski jumpers soaring majestically through the air at the Norge Ski club's jumping contests at Fox River Grove, long time residents were set to reminiscing. One trip, especially, was recalled for us which took place more than forty years ago. The late Will Bacon took his bob sleigh, filled with young people, down the river to the site of the annual ski jumps. Folks who emerge; from warm cars to spend a couple of hours watching the contests today have little reason to complain of the cold. It was a good deal rougher in "the good old days".
