PLAN COMMISSION CONSIDERS VARIOUS AREA PROBLEMS There are few busier groups in McHenry than the newly formed planning commission, which is designed among other tfyngs, to put problems before :ne people of the region and indicate ways and means of achieving solutions. The tremendous program of planning for the future touches many phases of community life, among them onie which is of interest to almost everyone-- schools. Rapid growth, without relating the tax base to the "child . ^se" has caught many areas short of classrooms and with no source of revenue for the construction and operation of additional schools. The location of schools, too, as the location of other public facilities, is basic to community stability. In planning, for schools, the child population of the future rather than the present must provided for, based upon a good over-all plan for school districts and attendance units, and a workable financing program. These two lakes are not producing as steadily as in the past, but when they are biting you can really pick up some big gills. The unofficial Illinois goose kill for 1958 was 37,000. Unless there is a terrific increase or decrease in geese this year there will be another forty-five day • goose season next fall. The office of Governor Wilj'l'iam G. Stratton has issued a j state-wide plea for farmers-, I sportsmen and people in gen- : eral to put out feed for the j wild birds this winter. All of j the natural bird food is frozen • und^r layers of ice and snow • in almost every section of the | state. If current weather con- I ditions prevail, the results i could be disastrous with the j thousands, even millions, of j birds dying of starvation. Per- | sons unable to handle the actuj al feeding are urged to contact | their local county conservation i office and to furnish them with "t bird feed or funds with , which to purchase the feed. I Here is an interesting note from the Conservation Departj ment. It seems that they are | trying to develop a super pan I fish. Practically all possible crosses of four specials--bluegills, green sunfish, red-ear sunfish and warmouth have been tried in experimental work. The hybrids are hatched in a laboratory and later placed in ponds containing no other fish. They are checked regularly for growth, sex ratios, behavior and fertility. All of the hybrids have attained weights of mere than threefourths of a pound and lengths of about eight inches in less than two years. The finished product should be gamy, a surface feeder, easy to catch on artificial lures, colorful, and should have, flesh of good quality. It should also have a large mouth, gluttonous appetite, grow rapidly to a large size and most important of all, should be of low reprodqctive capacity. If a "super pain fish" is eventually developed, its use will probably be restricted to isolated ponds and lakes uncontaminated by other parent sunfish types.
