And we are real pleased to pass the news along to you about Jack arid the honor he has received. He is a real hustler. and, has a world of ability. With the highest batting average in the whole suburban area, Jack was chosen with Jim Smith of the Warrior nine as All-Conference men. As the Bill Veeck show unfolded in the White Sox park last Sunday, it was a proud feeling that came over us when Jack Brickhouse announced that the "State Dairy Princess --M a r y Ann -- somebody -- Mary Ann Granger of Mc- Henry" was on the field in her capacity of princess. With most of our sports reports mentioning the boys, it is nice to hear nice reports on the girls from time to time. Of course, we do not attend the GAA annual banquets, so seldom get the news about this fine group of girls. We hear that Sandi Bykowski won the sportsmanship award this year. That's a nice one to win, Standi. Congratulations! fi It looks like the Johnsburg £igers and McHenry Shamrocks are going to be heard from all the way in the county league race tyiis year. ?. <»? Both teams have improved toid will continue to do so. fkanager Joe Frett has some "assy pitching strength. Just How the box scores. Manager John Knox tells us fills Shamrocks will play a Rouble header next Sunday, Starting on the Elgin V.F.W. diamond at 1 o'clock, then gravelling to Algonquin for |he second game. jl The Tigers will be at home jib Dundee next Sunday and Will surely draw a big crowd. tm LEAGUE jOPENIN® NEXT SUNDAY, I P.M. SHAMROCKS BEAT CRYSTAL LAKE IN 11 INNINGS First Setback For League Leaders In County Loop Play By Mickey Schaefer The McHenry Shamrocks defeated Crystal Lake 9-8 Sunday in eleven innings behind the pitching of Denny Freund. Denny pitched three and two thirds innings of no run, three hit baseball. Denny Freund also was the hitting star with 4. hits in six trips. Joe Stanek had three hits and Roger Benson's single with the bases loaded brought in the winning run in the eleventh inning. McHenry scored five runs in the second when, after one out, Rab Weber was hit by a pitched ball and Phil Judson and Jim Wickenkamp worked the pitcher for walks to fill the bases. Joe Stanek then doubled in two runs, and the third run came in and Stanek went to third when the ball got away from the third baseman. After Schaefer struck out, Bentz walked and stole second. Denny Freund singled home both runners. McHenry scored two more runs in the fourth when Stanek lead off by beating out a bunt. Schaefer also beat out a bunt. June 11, 1959 RINGWOOD FIVE WINS INTER-CHURCH TROPHY . The McHenry Pony League swings into action this week, but will hold the Grand Opening for the season next Sunday, starting at 1 o'clock. | The V.F.W. Drum and Bugle Corps and Color Guard will be present to lend impressive support to the occasion. Word from the League President, Charles D. Brown, indicates that the program will be short since regular games are scheduled for the afternoon. Officers are encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by many of the parents this year. Full ^support and attendance at teames is necessary in the successful operation of the league. « It is hoped that sponsors [will be present next Sunday •for the opening. Their presence Jis always helpful. . Managers and coaches have ifoeen working hard with the Jboys in preparation for the ,coming season. Boys who have •not registered may do so at Jijuiy time and their names placed on the waiting list for 'future assignment to teams. J- In order to meet all requirements of a sanctioned group, ^the league officers have decided to add a row of boards •to the top of the outfield jfence. This will take help. Both Vale Adams and Earle Seepe had 69's during the past week. The winners of the "I beat Ed Buss day" were, Weselius, Bruns, Hester, Burns, Rourke, Seepe, Schmidt, Busscher, Wilkinson, and Overton. The reason we have not had low net and Peoria winners in the paper is that they have not been figured out by the time we must turn the article over to the paper. The National Open, golfing's most prized honor, will be at stake over this weekend. The sentimental favorite will probably be Sam^Snead. Sam, who is one of the finest golfers this world has ever known, has still to win his first national open. Although the younger golfers are a bigger threat this year than they have ever been, I still look for Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, and Cary Middelcolf to be in the top ten. Pictured above are the members of the Ringwood Methodist church basketball team that won the 1959 Inter-Church Basketball League Tournament. This team won the tournament two years in a row, having an undefeated season, and will keep the traveling trophy as their permanent possession. It was presented to them at the annual award dinner May 20, held at the Ringwood Methodist church. Andy Cvercko, All-American and All-star tackle from Northwestern University, was the speaker for the evening and is shown presenting the trophy. Others from left to right, Rev. HOLD "DOUGHNUT DAY" TAG EVENT IN CITY FRIDAY Little brown doughnuts -- the paper variety -- will be seen everywhere in McHenry and elsewhere in the area on Friday, June 12, when the Salvation Army's annual tagging event is held. Approximately 12,000 volunteers in the Chicagoland vicinity will accept contributions from the public and reward the givers with the familiar doughnut-shaped tags. The goal of this year's drive is $160,000, according to Mrs. Harold Vycital, chairman of the McHenry part of the campaign, and Mrs. James Bell, Wonder Lake chairman. Funds contributed are used to help support the varied program of social services and emergency assistance to persons in need. During the past year, the Salvation Army helped more than 159.000 persons in the great Chicago area without reference to race or religion. ' AB R H J. Huff, rf 4 0 0 B. Schmitt, rf 0 0 0 W.
