What is the value of the oats in replacing Corn in the ration while the pigs are on pasture? This type question has been studied in several state experiment stations and by many commercial feed manufacturers on their research farms. Research at the South Dakota State College agricultural experiment station shows' that high quality oats, in the proper amounts, is an excellent feed for growing-finishing swine. Their research shows that oats may satisfactorily replace up to 40 per cent of the corn in rations fed to pigs on pasture. In dry lot it can replace up to 50 per cent of the corn in the mixed ration. More oats in the ration than these recommendations is apt to decrease gains and increase the amount of feed needed to produce the gains, according to Richard Wahlstrom, Animal Husbandry department. South Dakota State college. He cautions that oats with a bushel weight of less than 35 pounds may not be as satisfactory in growing pigs. The amount of high quality oats to use in swine rations, up to the maxiifrums suggested, will depend on how the prices of corn and oats compare. If the price per pound of oats is less than that of corn, it would be more economical to use the top amount of oats. Where corn is the lower priced, there is no advantage to using oats in rations for growing pigs. Walhstrom says this research helps bring the information up-to-date on use of oats in swine rations. Recommendations have been based on research done about twenty, years ago. Since that time, we have acquired much information on the value of vitamins, Page F vi wmm* THE OLD SPOT INN OSCAR & HE It MINE WEIN GARTNER, Props. S E R V I N G . . . . Another question that has been asked frequently by swine producers is: How do Saddleback hogs compare in efficiency with our standard breeds of hogs? Wessex Saddleback hogs, an English breed, are not recognized in the U.S., although some have been introduced into this country' and are being produced as a pure line for use in cross-breeding experiments. The following comment from Donald F. Engel, extension animal husbandman, University of Nebraska, will help answer the inquires about this breed: "SaddleDack hogs are, supposed to produce large litters, be good mothers, and in general. be more prolific than some of bur present breeds. However, a critical comparison cannot be made at this time because of the limited information available on Saddleback hogs in this country, as well as the small number of individuals being used in swine research program at the University of Nebraska, College of Agriculture." "Key To Profit" iq, 1959 turkey programs. Good management will cut down on turkey mortality as 40 per cent of the deaths are attributed to management. A successful producer should market 95 per cent of . the poults started. If the mortality rate is more than 5 to 6 per cent, then the producer is in for some shocking news when his check arrives from the processor. You should try to grow the grain needed to feed the turkeys. If this is not possible, the next best thing is to buy the grain at harvest and store it on your farm if you have the storage facilities. If oats are too high in price, try con-> centrating on corn, milo and and barley. The third management problem your local IFA feed dealer suggests , to turkey producers is labor. Keep your labor busy and get as much as possible for your labor dollar. Many producers have gone to bulk handling and feed equipment and pole-type sheds. the ground. This feeding experiment revealed that cattle consumed 87 per cent of the total amount stored in the upright silo at filling time, while" only 54 per cent of that stored on the ground could be recovered. There was a 98 per cent recovery of silage stored in glass-lined, gas-tight silos. Maybe the cheaply constructed type silos are actually more expensive in the long run. Three weeks before and three weeks after lambing are the most important periods for both ewe and lamb, according to Morris Hemstrom, University of Nebraska. An adequate, well-balanced ration for the ewe during this critical six-weeks' period will help insure a profit for sheep producers. Leafy, green alfalfa hay, one-half pound of grain daily, a salt and mineral mixture, and plenty of water will satisfy the increased nutritional requirements of the ewe during the lambing season. If alfalfa hay is not available, protein should be added at the rate of one pound of Vitamin A fortified 40 per cent supplement to each four or five ewes, For more detailed information concerning your feeding* problems contact your local Illinois Feed association feed dealer and he will be glad to give you assistance in solving your problems. This may not be the year to make a fortune in the turkey business. Management will be the The results of a two-year study on silage losses at South Dakota State college are most interesting. This report shows that there is considerable difference in the amount of feeding value received from corn silage stored in an upright silo and in that stored in a pile on Claire Beauty $H§pp® 100 S.
