A TODAY'S LANGUAGE MIGHT EVEN "BUG" NOAH WEBSTER Even Noah Webster might be bugged* today if he ran across a traxle . . . And what could be he possibly say to a hoopster? Americans seem to manufacture words like these for every gadget or social trend they produce. 4For the benefit of the man or women who doesn't read dictionaries, The World Book Encyclodedia has compiled a list of some of the words and phrases that entered our language in 1958. "Traxle," for example, is an automobile design in which the transmission is in the rear instead of against the engine. "Hoopster" is a person, usually a child or his weight-worried mother, who uses a hula hoop. Economists have brought clarity and imagination to the mysterious workings of supply and demand with th<e phrase "bottoming out," which means reaching the lowest point in a recession. The hotel has graduated from motel to "boatel"--that's a motel built over the water, where people can moor their boats during the night. If you have a heavy foot on the gas pedal, you obviously suffer from "roadomania." And if you wheel your groceries out to the car and forget to return the cart to #the store, you're guilty of "cartnaping." Science has introduced the word "megacorpse," meaning a million dead persons, such as could result from nuclear warfare. An example of making a silk purse out of sow's ear is "informational site." That's the area at the side of the road where a billboard e x t o Is "M other Maloney's Pickled Preserves" or welcomes y6u to town with "Warning: Speed Controlled by Radar." The height of simplicity is "pinch effect." That's the contraction that results from the magnetic interaction set up by a parallel flow of currents in plasma (highly ionized gas). •bug - v.t., to annoy or confuse; coined by the "Beat Generation." Young Bill Simpson, whose father, George, is pharmacist for the McHenry Medical Group, chewed on his pencil for a while, then a few wellchosen words right from the heart. When he learned that his brother, Tom, who is in service, recently married a Texas girl, Bill wrote this letter to his sister-in-law: "Dear Dorothy, "You got a good guy. I should know,)-- I'm his brother. Welcome to our family. My mother told me that you'll be my sister-in-law. Have fun and good luck. "Your brother-in-law. Bill." Prescriptions, too, Demand Accuracy!
