The Prophet And The Physician If the recent past is any augury of the immediate future, Americans can look forward to strides in health during the next forty years equally as spectacular as those which have made the last four decades the wonder age of medicine. The Health News Institue calls our attention to an inventory -- of things past and things to come -- which was read at the recent meeting of the American Medical association (in Atlantic City. The speaker was Dr. Wvman C. C. Cole, Sr., of Detroit. A prophet in 1919, he said, would have taxed the credulity of a young physician if he had told him: ' - "If you are still practicing in 1959 -- " >* You wiH not have seen a clinical case of diplftheria or tetanus for 25 years. A suitable formula for -99 out of 100 babies will be obtained at any drugstore or supermarket. Rickets, scurvy. ...and infantile tetany will' be textbook This and That Mrs. Tobey had a party Tuesday Aug. 11, at her home. The guests enjoyed the demonstration and afterwards Mrs. Tobev served coffee and cake. Mrs. John Behrendt of Lilymoor entertained a small club at a luncheon party Thursday, Aug. 13. Those present were Mrs. Earl Sans of Lakemoor, Mrs. Olson and Mrs. Dees of McHenrv and- Mrs. Young of Lilymoor. Mrs. Marten, son, and daughter. Pat, spent a week at their summer home in Lilymoor. Mrs. Belford attended a bridal shower, given in honor of Miss Sue Stinespring. on Aug. 6 given at the home of Mrs. Francke. Mrs. Hollenback i of Lilymoor also attended the shower. Remember to call me if you have any news. Thank you. diseases that you will have rarely, if ever, seen in private practice. It will be at least fifteen years since you have seen a patient with surgical mastoiditis. Most cases of pneumonia and scarlet fever will be treated in your office and will essentially be cured in 24 hours. Very few babies will die of diarrhea because of what you have learned about electrolyte and water metabolism." Forty Years From Now And what about forty years from now? r The accomplishments of the health team, in the refinement of techniques of treatment, de-' velopment and mass distribution of new drugs and immunizing agents and measures of public health, said Dr. Cole, would lead the same prophet to say to the physician who will still be practicing in 1999: Cancer and leukemia Will have been relegated, to medical history. The common cold will have beer) forgotten. Babies will rarely be born prematurely. A single explanation and method of control will have, been found for allergy. A single injection or tablet will immunize children against all of the communicable diseases. Many congenital defects will be avoided by a better understanding of genetics. Such metabolic diseases as diabetes, arthritis, and cystic fibrosis will be easily controlled by improved knowledge of the enzyme system. "I am sure," Dr. Cole concluded, "this is only a small fraction of what will actually transpire." SHOP IN McHENRY * 0&.'"ed be-ee-ee We may be a little weak on harmony--but the sentiment's sincere.
