PLAN SPECIAL ATTRACTION AT GOP STEER ROAST A special jpneeting of f^e "McHenry County Central Republicah-- committee was called this past week by "Chuck" Miller 01 this city, at which time chairmen and committees were selected for the steer roast and outing Scheduled for Sept. zb at Fox River Grove picnic grove. Serving will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Art Giavononni, general chairman, and Ed. Dowd stated that the ticket committee headed by Charles Parker of Woodstock, assisted by Howard Nehlig, reported a very satisfactory advance sale. John 'McConnell's job of securing the meat for the steer roast was made easy this year hv the purchase of "Spud", the 4-H open class champion and reserve grand champion of all breeds at the county fair. Games and prizes have been arranged by Elmer Granso, who says that special events have been scheduled of interest to children. The special arrangement committee has secured. and will erect a huge circus tent so that in the event of bad weather, all activities will be under canvas. The guest of honor will be U.S. Senator Everett M. Dirksen, who will give a short speech. Dance music will be offered, as well as a special treat by strolling musicians who will roam the grounds playing for the guests. FORMER LOCAL BUSINESS WOMAN DIES AT AGE 82 Mrs. John Thompson, 82. who operated a barbecue stand east of the river for almost a quarter of a century, died the evening of Sept. 3 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock, where she had been a patient for three days. She resided with her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Reese, on Riverside Drive, for nine years. Her husband, John, died in 1946. She is survived by the fe{ daughter and a son, Wilwfe of Woodstock; also three andchildren. The body rested at the George Justen & Son funeral home until Friday, when it was removed to the Thomas chapel in Terra Haute, Ind. Services were held there at 2 o'clock Saturday, with burial in Highland Lawn cemetery. Zion Lutheran Church Supports Fall Rally Two hundred and seventysrvon Lutheran churches in Chicago and northern" fllindis are presently engaged in a cooperative effort planning for the ninth Chicagoland Lutheran Hour rally to be held Sunday afternoon, Oct. 4. in the International Amphitheatre, Chicago. Zion Exangelical. Lutheran church of McHenry is among the active supporters of this gigantic rally, which is sponsored by the Lutheran Laymen's League of northern Illinois. Rev. Carl A. Lobitz is pastor. Some folks condemn the worry habit one minute and then practice it the next. Some people prefer to be counted out vyften the time comes to give an accounting. ENROLLMENT ESTIMATES IN CITY EXCEEbED (Continued from page 1) m would be well above the 1,000 mark, designating McHenry as Class AA, the highest classification made by the state. ^ At Edgebrook alone, a was believed that the final figure for enrollment might be as , much as 100 higher than anticipated. Looking back on the 1 lone individual grades which sufficed some years ago, it is hard to believe that in 1959 there are eight first grades; .six, second; six, third; six, fourth and the same number > of fifth grades. Waiting List The last kindergarten registration revealed 300 enrolled . and it was necessary to put between twenty and thirty more on the waiting list. - Cgunty-wide. Superintendent of Schools Richard Tazewell estimated that there may be • as many as 20,175 attending classes in public and private schools. Lasr year, there was about 19,129. , During the 1958-59 year, there were 10,674 in elementary public schools and 4,089 in private elementary schooIS"* and 232 in private high schools. Many of the high schools would have shown an even greater increase except that enrollment at Marian Central high school runs over 440, taking some from each of the coun- , ty public schools. The need for expanded facilities is very evident, and a number of communities have had *o make provision for continued growth in the years ahead. Locally, this has been done at Johnsburg, where a new elementary school is being constructed, and also at jHnrrisc school, Wonder Lake. LONG ILLNESS ENDS IN DEATH Of ANNA W. WICKUNE Anna W. Wickline of Wonder Lake died Wednesday morning, Sept. 9, at McHenry hospital after a year's illness. She was born in Chicago April 13, 1890, and had lived at Wonder Lake for twenty-one years, coming there from Chicago. She is survived by her husband, Grover W. Wickline; a sister, Clara Chance, of Chicago: a brotheh Harry Meier, of Chicago; onq niece and one nephew. The body rests at the Peter M. Justen & Son chapel, where Rev. Burton Schroeder of Nativity Lutheran church will officiate at last rites Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Learn To Swim When the beginner has learned to use his legs in an up and down thrash, he is ready to use the arms in dog paddle or human stroke. Alternately reach forward with each arm and pull back to the vertical; with a bent arm return to the extended positi9n, with recovery underwater. Thus the swimmer is constantly sliding on one forward extended arm while the other is pulling back under the body. The chin is held at water level and -a breath taken as you' slide forward on one side. Breathe in through the mouth and exhale through the nose. This is an intermediary step in learning the crawl stroke, but many people feel such paddling procedure is necessary since it enables the learner to keep himself up_wj?ile his head is held out of water. The higher the head is held the more energy is needed to keep going. Streamline your position as mueh as possible, relax and pull back as well as downward. A steady kick will help keep the body horizontal, but keep the kick under water --kicking air will get you nowhere. Ninety per cent of the power comes from the arms usin^ the shoulder muscles in the forward drive as you ride over and through the water. Practice-- practice--practice.
