Pag« Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, October 22, 19590. Those stalwart Warriors of McHenry High showed what they are -made of as they fought their way to victory at Barrington last Saturday afternoon. Knocking off the league leaders was a man size job and the Mandli boys were men all the way. Coach Mandli told us early in the season that this is a team that worked together and could fool the experts. McHENRY UPSETS BARRINGTON'S HOMECOMING WITH 18-13 WIN IN FINAL MINUTES OF PLAY By John Barry Now comes the job of trying to take care of a strong Palatine team Friday night on Mc- Cracken Field. This will be the last home game of the season. On Friday, Oct. 30, the Warriors travel to Dundee. The final game will be played at Libertyville Saturday, Nov. 7. Any of you fellows who are interested in playing on a town basketball team are urged to attend a meeting in St. Mary's gym next Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. If you want advance information about the team, call Art Beck (Ev 5-4956) or Chuck Pearce (Ev 5-3524). The Northern Illinois Amateur Basketball association will consist of real fast teams from Algonquin. Marengo, Dundee, Huntley. Woodstock. St. Charles, Cary and McHenry. All bom? nmps will be played at 2:30 nm on Sunday in St. Mary's gym. Basketball is coming round the bend, the first game on this town team schedule will be played against Cary in McHenry. More about this team after the meeting We expect to see a real good team representing McHenry. Some people wonder why we do not run reports on the S o p h o m o r e f o o t b a l l g a m e s . Just to set the records straight, the North Suburban Conference does not permit schools to publicize the Soph games. The job the Soph coaches have is to teach the boys the game f»nd see thnt they are prepared fo" varsity play. The Lakemoor association is contributing $100 to the McHenry Swimming Pool project. The association consists of a group interested in worthy projects in the Lakemoor area. The various fund raising drives conducted at Steff and Wally Szareks /iave been instrumental in raising thousands of dollars for the Lakemoor community projects. On a bright and chilly Saturday afternoon an inspired McHenry team thrilled fans by upsetting the highly rated Barrington Bronchos 18-13. An over capacity Homecoming crowd couldn't believe their eyes as the fighting Bronchos were corralled by determined Warriors. At the conclusion of the game, it was difficult to decide who was the most excited over the win, as many football players wearing various Colored lettermen's jackets leaped the fences to hug and congratulate the Warriors. It was observed that the coaches from various North Suburban Schools were well represented among the crowd of enthusiastic fans. The Bronchos' coach, Tom Frederides, commented after the game, "Your boys played good ball; they deserved to win." Coaches Mandli and Hutchinson were well pleased with the Warriors as they played hard, and never stopped fighting until the final gun. McHenry's win puts them into a four way tie for first place with Barrington, Crystal Lake, and Woodstock. The next few weeks may not determine the outcome of this race, for it looks as though it will go right down to the wire. McHenry's first touchdown cnme on an 11 yard end run by Butch Justen who was set free by neat blocks from Steinbach, Gantert. and Miller. The touchdown was set-up by a 32 yard run by Tom Miller who was playing fullback as well as a halfback to fill in for Joe Sanford who may be back for the Palatine game. The PAT was missed. With five minutes of the first quarter gone. Barrington was forced to punt, but it was blocked by Angelo Budasi to be recovered on the Bronchos' 32 yard line. Three plays later the Warriors scored again on a 17 yard pass from Steinbach to Tom Fisher. The PAT was missed. Freund -- Times Carried 12; Total Yds. -10; Average -5. The PAT was missed. Half time score 12-6. The third quarter was scoreless as both teams failed to threaten. Both Barrington and McHenry scored in the fourth ouarter. The Bronchos scored first on an 80 yard march, climaxed by a yard plunge by Kinnamon for the touchdown. The PAT was converted by Larry Moore making the score 13-12 in favor of the Bronchos. McHenry showed true spirit and desire as they came back with 6 minutes left to score once again. The touchdown drive was set up by a 35 yard pass from Paul Morenz to Mike Gantert. Four plays later Steinbach carried the ball over on a 4 yard plunge. The PAT was missed. Barrington came back, but the Warriors held them as their defense tightened up. On the fourth down Barrington tried a final pass which was snatched by Bill Oeffling putting a damper on the Bronchos' hopes. Steinbach carried the ball twice to run out the remaining time to seal the victory. McHenry 18 Barrington 13. The Warriors once again played a good defensive game, as they held the Bronchos when it really counted. Men doing an excellent job on both offense and defense are: Angelo Budase. At Crystal Lake against Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst last weekend, for example, Parsley had 13 players in action the first half. Elmhurst used 27, yet gained only a 13-6 margin at that point. The best team in the Northeast Catholic conference, IC finally wore down the Hurricanes and won, 34-12. In Saturday's battle, Marian will play a team which St. Mary's of Woodstock whipped last season, 13-6. Most of Marian's players were on the Woodstock school's roster before the county-wide parochial school was established this season. After this weekend's game, Marian has three more contests on its schedule. The Hurricanes visit Elgin to face St. Edward on November 1 in an afternoon game. They visit North Boone at Capron on November 6, and end the season November 15 with an intersquad game. OUR CROSS COUNTRY TEAM AT MCHS HAS FINE 5-2 RECORD The McHenry Cross Country Team is having another good year with a 5-2 record. With four returning lettermen and with the aid of the new runners, the Warriors should top last year's record. The returning lettermen are Mike Creighton, who set a new record for the McHenry course and a new county meet record, Jim Hanson, who should be the number one man on the team next year, Jay Walkington, who should have his best year this year, and Dave Miller. A couple of new runners who should really give the team a lift are Roger Zahn and Tom Creighton. The Warriors will race against Elgin and Palatine this coming week. These" two races will probably be the toughest races of the year. "r. F. W. Auxiliary News Florence Svoboda IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE The regular meeting of the V. F.
