The sign "under construction" was removed from the entrance of a new Museiim of Science and Industry exhibit the time of rites, the body was ! ^ast week, opening up a wonder world of sound and musical tone to visi'.ors. The new exhibit, "Sciencc of Sound and Musical Tone", shows in colorful, push button fashion, how the sounds with which we live, work and play originate, how they are transmitted and received. Scientific exhibits demonstrate the origin of sound as vibration in air. Transmission of vibration from a tuning work in motion is shown in color as it bumps its way through air to the world's best receiver, the human oar. In the instrument gallery, the origin of musical tones is traced as produced by a variety of instruments including the vibrating strings of a violin, the reed of. a clarinet, and the skin of a drum. Unique among exhibits is a YOUTHS SENTENCED Two Crystal Lake men were sentenced to twenty years in the state penitentiary at Joliet following a half day of evidence heard in circuit court at Woodstock Friday. They were Robert Matson. 19, and Richard Geske, 20, who entered guilty pleas to charges of rape of an 18-year-old girl on Sept. 5. while a third, John Ritzert, 17, held the girl's fiance at gunpoint. Judge Carroll said he could find no mitigating circumstances and felt there was little importance in the fact that the pair said they regretted the act. However, he added that he would give some consideration to their age. Reminder The date of our rummage sale is fast approaching. Shown with an electromagnetic tone generator, a wheel with a serrated edge spins past a magnetized rod. As the wheel turns, its teeth set up variations in the magnetic field of the rod. The variations, in turn, induce a voltage in a coil, which produces one fundamental tone. Different tones may be produced by changing the shape of the wheel. A push button movie, with earphones for nstening, in another part of the exhibit, explains how fundamental tones are converted into music, rich in harmonics, expression and power. Shown for the first time also, is a small mechanism -- 14 x 13 x2 -- called a reverberation device, which provides the acoustical equivalent of a large auditorium. Moving from the pure science of sound and musical tone, visitors may see how scientific principles of sound and musical tone have been adapted to use in homes, churches and schools.
