Rakow Associates of Elgin (our village engineers) attended the last meeting of the village board on Monday, Jan. 25 and outlined the roafa program which will commence as soon as the weather allows. The Rakow company is working in conjunction with our 'road commission of which Don Parenti is the chairman. ^ A drainage ditch will be dug a)Wg Park View beyond Or chard Drive, relieving^® situa tion whrph has long been a "headache". Orchard Drive will be scarified and coated with gravel, providing a suitable bed which will be black - . topped at a later date. When c o m p l e t e d , O r c h a r d D r i v e (froirj Lake Shore Drive to the blacktop will be in as good condition as Eastwood Drive. This project will be carried oututilizing motor fuel tax money. Karl Koch, village attorney, informed the board of the amendment to the Cities and Villages Act, which requires a zoning map of the corporate limits of the village and the zoning ordinance, to be pub lished before March 1. This act will be compiled with -- and Ai% Nelson and Art Stuhlfeier were named to head up this committee. They will be assisted by the rest of the trustees. The next meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 8 in the beachhouse at 8 p.m. All members of the community are cordially invited to attend. fJ)ur Deepest Sympathy xo Mrs. Virginia Parkhurst, whose mother, Mrs. Iva Moorehead of Crockett Estates, passed away on Wednesday, Jsn. 27 about 9:15 p.m. She went into a coma about 7 p.m. and never regained consciousness. Mrs. Parkhurst went to the Villa Rest Home where her mother had been a patient since Monday, as soon as she notified. Mrs. Moorehead had been hospitalized in Mc- Henry for the preceding three weeks. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Strang Funeral Home in Antioch with interment at R i d g e w o o d C e m e t e r y n e a r Niles. Mrs. Moorehead was preceded in death-by -her husband. E«|ar Samuel, who died in August of 1948. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Schneuk of East Moline, 111., and Mrs. Parkhurst of the village, one brother, John B'yers of Gary, Ind.; five grandchildren, Karen and Pamela Parkhurst and three others, and eight great-grandchildren, Frank Parkhurst, who himsr^ was a patient at the McHenry hospital left there to make arrangements. /He collapsed at the funeral <home on Saturday and the Antioch rescue squad was summoned and administered oxyger/ until the arrival of the ambulance. He was rushed to McHenry hospital and has been receiving oxygen on and off. His condition was reported as fair as of Monday. Both Ginny and Frank need your prayers and well wishes to carry them .through this period of strife. Mrs. Parkhurst, who is in a cast, will be convalescing for many months. The subjects have been apprehended and dealt with -- to the fullest extent of the law. Let this be a warning to home* owners to keep your doors locked--and report any suspicious activities to the proper authorities. i Swimming Pool Fund Swells The Ladies of the Lake held a short business meeting before their social on Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Marie Howe. At this time, the subject of the McHenry swimming pool was . brought before the women. Because of the controversy, it was decided to have the gals vote by written ballot. The motion passed by a vote of 11-9-- to donate $25 towards the project. There are times when issues arise in connection with the club when it is not feasible to call all the members for an opinion. For this reason, it was decided to appoint five trustees and they are Betty Poledna, Theresa Schultz, Ethel (Petey) Schmidt, Anne, Zahn, and your reporter. Most other clubs operate on this basis. During the playing of games the following women had reason to rejoice: Betty Reiter, Wilma Zody, Laura Slater, Theresa Schultz, Meta Schroeder, Alice Gustafson, Marie Howe, and Louise Hammerstein. 'Nuff said? The gals snacked on homemade cakes and consumed plenty of hot java during their "after meeting" gab session. The next meeting will be held the last Thursday in February, also at the home of Mrs. Howe. Grateful acknowledgement to Marie for opening her home to the women. That beachhouse gets mighty cold in the wintertime. New Candidate for "Queen" Contest Of bourse the little gal will have to wait until 1964 before mom Kathleen and poppa Ronal Godina can register Donna Catherine for the local small queen contest! Thie husky little lady was born at Memorial hospital for McHenry County on Friday, Jan. 29 at 9:16 a.m. A nice little bundle for the nurses, she tipped the scales at 9 lbs., 8 ozs. Finding playmates will be no problem 'cause she has a big sister waiting for her at 724 West Lane--Colleen-- age 19 months. Nice, huh? Mr. and Mrs. Ronal Godina have been living in the community for over one year. The maternal grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Greaney, resides with her other daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Klapperich, also, in the c o m m u n i t y . We are referring to violations against village ordinances. It seems as though <pur canine friends are being allowed to roam. Please confine ycur pet or he will be picked up and impounded. And this \^ill cost you some of your hard-earned loot! Garbage violations include cans being left at the roadway all week lonn This is "verboten"! According to the ordinance cans must be 30 gal. minimum wills a tight fitting cover and watertight. Garbage not allowed in open barrels. Last--but in no wise least-- is the tampering with stop signs. This i* against village ordinance and must come to a "screeching halt"! According to the police department, guilty parties will be prosecuted. Please comply with these regulations which were put into •-effect Io protect our village and residents. Thanks much!! Shoppers Take Note Take groceries for Sunday breakfast off your shopping list and lei poppa "pick up the tab" at Berenice and Whitey's on Sunday, Feb. 7 when the McCullom Lake Men's Club will be serving. Those who have attended are aware of the high quality and the quantity of the food served Plan now-- to attend! Accident Victim Returns Home Mrs. Ruth Palmer of Griswold Lake, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Breridle, Sr., returned to her home last Sunday. She was injured in an automobile accident on March 15, 1959. For three weeks, she was a patient at McHenry hospital. When released she was taken to her mother's home and cared for there. Mrs. Palmer was bedridden for over 10 months! and during this time she received the best of care. At intervals, she had to go back to the hospital for treatment and examination. This gal has had one rough time and it isn't over. She is still in a wheel chair and must use crutches. She will be wearing a brace for six months. Don't forget those cheery cards and messages during Mrs. Palmer's long convalescense. Public Party The Cullom-Knoll association will again "host" a party this Saturday, Feb. 6 at McDonald's. All proceeds will go to the building fund for a larger recreation hall. Goodies to soothe the inner man will also be served. Everyone invited. Page Nine "I'm Off on the Road to Morocco" For the next three months, this will be hubby Jake Leqpp'- ,que's favdiite song! Comes the second of May--he and the rest of his buddies in squadron VR- 724, Glenview Naval Air Station will board R5D's for a fabulous trip over the ocean. -Des-: ti nation--P o r t Lyautey, Fr. Morocco, for two grand and glorious weeks! It will be their annual training cruise. Side trips to London, Paris, and other glamorous 'spots are also on the agenda. It will be in the nature of ia good-will tour with V.I.P., photographers, and newsmen also slated to . make the tour. The State of Illinois is open for suggestions for a suitable gift for Mohammed V. It should be something representative of our state. All suggestions from readers" will be greatly appreciated. This squadron will be carrying the gift and , may make the presentation. (Naturally. I'm "green with envy"!) Lest you. think it, is only a pleasure cruise-- let's straighten the record. The reason behind the trip '« of a very serious nature, and all those fellows will be in for plenty of hard work!! Get Well Wishes To Mrs. Monica Morris who has • been laid up for over six weeks with a severe case erf pneumonia, according to reports. Here's hoping this gal who is the.mainstay of a family of seven youngsters will soon be up and about! Mrs. Ethel (Sunny) Fox has been battling the flu bug for much too long also. She was missed at the last meeting of the women's organization. Sure hope we see her cheery smile among us very soon. Guess the weather hasn't helped much. Off to the Sunny South Tired of the cold and gloom --Jean and Hugh McDonald did the smart thing. Packed their bags on Sunday and departed Monday morning for torrid temperatures in Florida. Going along for the ride was Jean's sister, Mrs. Theresa Cunningham. After a few weeks in that sunny state, the trio will swing up around Oklahoma way and drop in for a visit with favorite "son" -- Ed Caron who is stationed there. Should be fun. Mystery of the Week What <jlo Mrs. Gert Walter and George Washington have, in common? What else but a cherry tree!! Gert is a bit more modern, though. Instead of a hatchet--she used the family vehicle. Same results! Now I'd better move out of town! Nasty Fall Mrs. George Haines of Fountain Lane slipped and fell on the walk alongside of her home recently and suffered a broken left wrist. The medicos encased it in plaster, which she will be wearing for a month or longer. Medical Bulletin Happy to report that Mrs. Margaret Reid* is home from Memorial hospftal after her surgery and is coming along fine. She is scheduled for trips to Elgin periodically for x-ray treatments. The cards she received during her confinement were a great help towards bolstering her morale. Keep up the good work. Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO Taken Form the Files of January 27, 1910 Frederick Conrad Block, one of McHenry's long respected citizens, passed away at his home Thursday afternoon; after two years of failing health, at the age of 61 years. Rev. A. Roberts, in charge of the Universalist church here for the past five years, has resigned to accept a similiar charge at Durham, N. C. A merry party offe relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bolger Saturday evening, to remind them of their twentyfifth wedding anniversary. Popular games of a quarter of a century, music, a mock wedding ceremony and refreshments made up an enjoyable evening. , O. B. Gilbert, who left McHenry the fore part of December, has joined the theatrical profession and is now travelling through the south with a company that is playing August Thomas' powerful'drama, entitled "Arizona". O. B. is carrying the role of Lieut. Hallack, 11th U S Cavalry. A public card party will take place at the beautiful country home of John Carey, near Ringwood, Saturday evening. The home will be thrown open as it never was before to welcome those who wish to attend. Miss Kathryn Burks entertained members of the Jolly Twelve club at the E. E. Bassett home Saturday evening. Frank Mead, an old time resident of this vicinity, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Joslyn, in Elgin, Sunday morning. Announcement has been made ol' the marriage of Miss Lillian Pouse and Mr. Raymond Powers, which took place at St Patrick's church, Wednesday morning, with Miss Eleanor Phalin and A. H. Pouse attending. The last of the McHenry boys to join the colors are now safely, home. They are Leo Smith and Carl Patzke, who spent most of their time in Siberia. From Ostend comes the news that Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson are caring for a new baby at their home. This is their eleven In child and all are well and happy. Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Justen entertained members of the Variety club at a "kid" party at their home Thursday evening, when all came in "kid" attire. James were played, with awards going to Mrs. A. I. Froehlich and George Stilling. Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Wray and daughter have moved to Elfein where Mrs. Wray has accepted a position as teacher of the third grade in the George 1\ Lord school.
