Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, March 24, 1960 "SO 1 HEAR" Don Howard won't let us forget that we ran a story on MCHS track about three weeks ago, stating that Coach Hutchinson expected to start practice the following week. We met Don on the street last week right after k snow storm and he casually remarked that he just came from watching the" track team. They could use snow shoes. John R. Schmitt, one of our White Sox. pals, says li'fe isn't the same since Ed Doyle went on the rural mail route. See, Ed, somebody misses you! Our sister. Ellen, phoned us Saturday night while 'the consoiation game was being played at. Champaign and advised us to turn on Channel 11 ,if we wanted to see Indiana basketball known as "Hoosier Hysteria". Our Illinois tournament was real tame and gentlemanly compared to that Indiana deal. Coaches really put on a show and fans went wild. Action really started when the East Chicago coach whipped off his coat. Mike Creighton and Bill Oeffling made the North Suburban All-Star team and were chosen on most of the independent selections around the area. George Sullivan saw John Steinbach in the regional and had him on his team. That's when John really hit his stride. MCHS HAS 66 CANDIDATES OUT FOR TRACK TEAM JOHNSBURG ANNUAL ! BASKETBALL MEET SUNDAY, MARCH 27 MIRACLES ARE COMMONPLACE AT ELECTRIC THEATRE When we watched some of the teams that made it through the various tournaments, we decided McHenry was only one big man short the last two years. We made the Plaindealer 40 year items last week, but didn't know about it until the Hogans and the OlSons gave uc the business. They knew we rode a pony, knew our age and had a word to say about those 10 cows we milked night and morning. Only 10 cows? On Will Whiting's farm? We just got warmed up with the firsot 10! Suppose you have seen Bob Justen's new furniture store. We couldn't help thinking of the change since the days when Grandpa Jake and Grandma Justen operated the store. The ways of the old days to the modern are something to compare. There were some things about the old days we liked. For instance, Bob, your grandfather always had a bench out on the sidewalk during the summer months so a fellow could sit down for a visit. No hurry in those days. See separate story on this page about the Johnsburg basketball tournament next Sunday. You can be sure that one will be packed with action. Seems like a 600 series is nothing to blow about this year in the Major League. W. Webb had a 660, M. Crouch 646 and J. Etten 634. Hup Smith has a 642 tHls week, R. Hiller 254-620, Alice Gaulke a 211 game, Mary Beth Fuchs 548, Bill Brennan 249- 628, and Marie Wilbrandt 524. McHenry's track team will have sixty-six boys out this spring to compete in 14 events, Varsity and Frosh-Soph. The coaches are looking for depth in each event. " • Coach Hutchinson has moved Captain Mike Creighton from the 880 yard run to the low hurdles. This will give Mike more time to concentrate on the high jump. Track and Field, with boys competing against each other on an individual basis as well as working toward a total team effort, takes a great deal of perseverance and shows which boys have real heart. Everyone is invited to attend. ST. MARY'S FIVE WINS AMERICAN LEGION TOURNEY Defeat Harrison 45-31 In Finals Sunday Afternoon We ran a story a while ago on Alfred Johnston's big catch. Now, we learn that his wife caught a 7' 1" sailfish near Stuart, Florida. Mrs. Johnston had this one mounted. This is the third big one she has hauled in during her days of fishing. Sounds like a lot of exercise. The EgyptianS^jgave us the inch, which they called the ynce. It was the distance from the end of the little finger to the first joint. MCHS FRIDAY Friday, March 25, at 7 p.m., the McHenry high school gym will again be open to all basketball fans. On this date the girls will be displaying their athletic skill as they battle through a game of basketball. First the Freshmen girls face the Sophomores and then the Juniors play the Seniors. Of course a basketball game\ wouldn't be complete without cheerleaders and entertainment. To cheer them on to victory, each class has its own male cheerleaders, which undoubtly will contribute some hilarity to the affair. Between games other G.A.A. members will provide some interesting entertainment. The performers include Veronica Walsh, Pat Anderson, Gail Johnson, Kathy Curran, Mary Bailey and Nancy Tindell, doing a thrilling tumbling act, Karen Olson dancing to "Tweedley Dee" and Judy Gregory and Rose Linden with some humorous commercials. Members of the All Star teams are as follows: Freshman, Debbie Block, Marcy Christensen, Theresa Hettermann, Carol Hughes, May Kirk, Louise Leakey, Peper Lopez, Madelyn Malstrom, Sue Prawl, Gayle Reid, Bonnie Segermark, Vicki Viverito, Nancy West. Sophomores: Gayle Bonder, Kasyle Bute, Sue Dahlquist, Lynn Gustafson, Charlene Hagberg, Dorothy Kerr, Marilyn Kiehl, Doris Lossman, Janet Schimke, Marilyn Smith, Chris Szczpak, Gina Keerberg. Juniors: Dorothy Adams, Anita Barger, Heddie DeYoung, Mary Dresdow, Reni Krefft, Ardis May, Lois Schmitt, Jackie Specht, Sandi Stetson, Nancy Whiting. Eleanor Wirfs and Frances Mayfield. Seniors: Karen Bailey, Jean Borchardt, Vicki Qiedrich, Nancy Fischer, Marilyn Fuchs, Marlene Gallas, Judy Hans, Pat Hiller, Janice Huff, Shirley Jager, Ann Peschke, Nancy Piatt. These girls have practiced hard to provide a thrilling basketball game. Don't miss seeing them in action! St. Mary's gymnasium was the scene of some very spirited and well played basketball games the past week, highlighted by the championship game on Sunday afternoon when St. Mary's defeated Harrison 45-31 for the American Legion trophy. A large crowd saw the finalists battle on even terms for three quarters before the champions pulled away to a decisive viotory. St. Mary's led 29-27 going into the last quarter. /• Captain Kush, a big fellow, led Harrison With 20 points while Jon Meyer sank 17 points to lead the winners. In spite of spirited play and close defensive work, the teams held fouling to a low figure. It was a well played game with good coaching apparent on both teams. Following the championship game Fred Meyer introduced Dr. Raymond Watkins, President of Harrison School, who verv ably credited all who made the tournament a success. Dr. Watkins then presented the third place trophy to the Johnsburg public school team and Coach Duane An-* dreas. This team had a 13-5 record for the regular season and placed first in conference plav. Father Nilges presented the second place trophy to the Harrison School team and their coach, Chuck Cuda. Under the direction, of Coach Cuda, this team had a 15-5 record, placing second in their own conference and first in their conference tournament. Past Commander Robert ^endricks represented the loc^ k American Legion Post in presenting the first place trophy to Coach Doran and his champions of St. Mary's. These boys finished second in conference play and second in conference tournament play. Mr. Hendrichs pleased the crowd with a remark that this championship game was much better than the 9tate championship game played in Champaign the previous evening. He also pointed out that St. Mary's had won the large travelling trophy two consecutive years and that by winning next year it would be theirs to keep. Hendricks jokingly remarked that it might be a good time to "break up the Yankees since these big trophies cost money. Thanks were extended to the referees, Jerry Kalk of McHenry and'Harry Keilman of Algonquin, for their work in handling the tourney. And Fred Meyer's mention of Fai ther Nilges at the organ throughout the tourney drew a big round of applause. This is the eighth year that McHenry's American Legion Post No. 491 has' sponsored this basketball tournament as a part of I very commendable child Welfare program. The sponsorship is greatly appreciated by all who have seen its good influence through the years.
