The group which totaled forty in all met in St. Mary's auditorium for a spelling cohtest. We are real proud of Pam Obstfelder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Armin Obstf eXd e r of Sunnyside, who reflied as the winner. Pam is in th<* eighth -grade. She received! a prize and a winners ribbon for being the champion spelleij. All students participating in - the contest also received ribbon!.; Forthcoming Events of St. Agatha's Court Officers and members of St. Ag^ha's court No. 777 and the juvenile girl Forester members will receive Communion in a body at the 8:30 Mass next Sunday, April 3. Breakfast will be cooked and served by the men of the parish immediately following the Mass in the community club hall. The men are Hoirtfr this in appreciation for thr good food and service thc» ladies bestowed on them lasSP Sunday when they observed their Communion Sunday. A small fee will be charged for the breakfast. Anyone who wishes to donate toward this breakfast can do so by contacting Marie Oeffling. A reminder to bowling fans --the court members will be boding again next Wednesday afternoon at 1:30. All members of the court are invited to come on over and join in the fun. Also on the reminder list is the lady Forester banquet coming up on April 19. Reservations must be made no later than April 17 and can be done by calling Virginia Pitzen. Instaijatioii Uf officers will be helcr in the community club hall following the dinner which will be served at Hettermann's. Items of Interest The following news will be of interest to persons who were acquainted with Betty and Duane Collis who resided on North avenue for several years befcffe moving to McHenry. ThflPCoHis family is now residents of Scottsbluff, Neb. Duanes' father. Keith L. Collis of Lohrville, Iowa, was stricken with a heart attack which resulted in his death on March 23. Duane had just phoned his father an hour earlier to tell him of the recent findings of a heart condition of their infant son. The Collises travelled to Lol^'ille for the funeral last Saturday. > Betty and Duane welcomed their third child, a son, last Jan. 16. Young Gerry made his appearance in a Nebraska hospital and weighed 7 lbs., 11 dzs. His parents took him to a Denver, Colo., hospital where the heart condition was discovered. Our prayers are* offered for the complete recovery of the infant. While in Denver, the Collises visited Bill and Dolly Schmitt who reside there. Girl Scouts and Brownie New® Troops 193 and 378 are preparing decorations and skits foj: the Mother-Daughter tea coming up in May. Peggy Peterson was cookie hostess for troop 378 even though she wasn't able to attend the meeting herself. Ruth Ann Schmitt and Sherry Oeffling taught the girls of Troop 408 a few steps in square dancing. Sherry is elected to draw a poster for the fair coming up next Sunday at the American Legion hall. Mrs. Phil Mangold is to be thanked for the homemade ^rolls the troop enjoyed. Feted at Shower .. The basement of the Mangold home was appropriately decorated for a bridal shower last Sunday afternoon. The guest of honor, Mary Banks, spent a good part of the afternoon opening lovely gifts presented to her by the twentyfive guests who were in attendance. Hostesses for the afternoon were Sharon Fitz- Gerald, Sue Brooks, Joanne Kelly and Joy Mangold. Mary will become the bride of a Lake Geneva man on April 30. Around the Town Don and Betty Lou Dowe of Bloomington spent last Monday visiting relatives here. Spending several days in Missouri this week visiting his family are Emitt Roberts and two of his children, Cindy, and Mike. CITY. COUNTY TAX COLLECTIONS FOR MONTH HIGH A report from the state during the past week listed city sales tax collections grossing $5,695,450 and county sales tax collections at $200,440. The collections represent a tax on December retail sales at one-half per cent in municipalities and parts of counties not in municipalities. Under the County Retailers' Occupation Tax Act, McHertry county's pollection amounted to $5,515.&8. In the municipal collection, McHenry ran only slightly behind Crystal Lake with the figure of $6,391.53. Crystal Lake collected $6,806.37 and Woodstock topped the county with $8,311.31. Others were as follows: Algonquin -- $1,12?.84 Capron -- $248.33 Cary -- $1,359.96 Fox River Grove -- $687.05 Harvard -- $3,611.99 Hebron-- $320.38 Huntley -- $690.62 Island Lake -- $282.12 Lakemoor -- $271.09 Marengo -- $2,280.98 Richmond -- $623.67 Spring Grove -- $147.58 Food sales topped the various categories in sales tax collections with $57,072.85. Woodstock led all communities with a total collection in all categories of $50,968.99. Crystal Lake was second with $45,561.88 and McHenry third with $39,440.10. We were horrified to discover the theft of. one of our lovely spruce trees. Ot course, we were very hurt and disappointed to see this for we take great pride in our garden. "We worder to this day just how one of our Wonder Lake neighbors could take such advantage of a summer resident and enjoy a stolen Christmas tree in his home during the Holy season. GIVE SELECTIVE SERVICE COLLEGE TESTS ON APRIL 28 College students in Illinois will take the Selective Service college qualification test on April 28 at 23 testing centers in this state. Applications for the test must be postmarked not later than midnight April 7, according to Willard A. Mannin^Illinois director of Selective Service. Applications are now available at any local board office and students ire urged to apply early. Scores made on the test help the local boards in considering students for deferment from induction in order to pursue college studies as undergraduates or graduates. The purpose of student deferments is to give promising vexing men an opportunity to prepare themselves for careers in support of the national interest. Act On Licenses Ol County Drivers From the office ,of Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier comes an announcement of action involving drivers ,in the county. The licenses of Robert Grammer, Malcom Wade and Jerry Wilcox, all of Woodstock, Clayborne Harvey and Allen McMillan of Crystal Lake, Walter Kubicki of McHenry and Edward Miller of Harvard were suspended for three offenses. Probationary permits were issued to A. Fermin Montezon ahd Arthur Thorsen of Crystal Lake and Otto Wolff of Rt. 6, McHenry. Parents can go far toward protecting their teenage drivers by restricting use of the family car to daylight hours. According to the Institute for Safer Living, 60 per cent of fatal accidents occur after dark, many of which involve young drivers. Carpentier has announced that his office has rescinded the suspension of the license of William E. Ehle of Crystal- Lake. Action was taken upon review of the record which disclosed that duplicate reports of speeding were received from a Wisconsin court. REGISTRATION DRIVE PAYS OFF WITHIN COUNTY isc The Voter's Service committee of the League of Women Voters of W oodstock-Mc- Henry and the Girl Scouts of both communities are very gratified by the startling increase in new voters' registrations as reported by County Clerk Vernon Kays. Three thousand cards provided by the League and distributed by the Scouts were hung on doorknobs to remind residents to register. Some 1,500 new registrations were recorded. March 14 was the final day for registration before the primaries.
