'Pag* Fo>r THE McHEffiLY PLAINDEALER Thursday* April 7, 19$ J&tj £aJt£*L Va/Uh* SO I HEAR -- Just returned from the fifth . annual banquet sponsored by the McHenry Rotary Club to honor MCHS basketball players, wrestlers, and cheer leaders. This banquet will be long remembered for the terrific message so forcibly delivered by Ray Eliot, former football coach at the University of Illinois. Ray was far and away the • H best speaker heard in some |I ti me. He loosened up his crowd : £with amusing reports at the I $ start, then drove home his : points so convincingly that all : age groups gained something : good. After hearing Eliot, we can well understand how he has lifted his teams to a pitch for some of the biggest upsets of all time. Our cheer leaders, those bouncing young gals, were wellpoised and lovely young ladies is they walked up to receive their awards. We like to attend such banquets. We suppose every school has some smart punks, but our faith in young people gets a great boost every time we see such groups as were in attendance Tuesday night Somebody took time to paste that now famous 40 year item on a card, draw a picture and come up with some^ doubting humor. It was mailed from Chicago. Our Girl Friday in the sports department (Marie Yegge) guessed the name of one "Biff Meyer. And that might be our man! Art King, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. King , is a member of the varsity tennis team at Illinois Wesleyan University in this, his senior year. Nice going, Art. SPECIAL AWARDS PRESENTED Kotalik Studio Photo An impressive and happy part of the program during the Rotary sponsored athletic banquet at MCHS Tuesday night was the presentation of special awards. Pictured above are Dr. H. S. Fike, president of the McHenry Rotary club, presenting trophy to Dan Kinnerk, sophomore wrestler, who gained the most points during the past season. Ray Eliot, former football coach of the University of Illinois and featured speaker of the evening, is shown with John Steinbach, who won the free throw trophy for the second consecutive year with a lofty 77 plus percentage. The banquet was an outstanding success as Coach Eliot delivered a hard hitting address that will linger long with all who had the • good fortune to be present. , GRASS FIRES RESULT IN NO PROPERTY DAMAGE Three grass fires brought out the local firemen this past week, giving evidence that spring is with us. The first was in a lot on Elm street near the Peter M. Justen chapel, which occurred early Saturday afternoon, and the • second was behind Pine Tree Tower, east of the city, Monday noon. A 'third fire broke out on N. Park street Wednesday morning. No damage was reported in any of the fires. Firemen warn that there is a fine up to $100 for starting grass fires that get out of control and necessitate calling the department.
