PUN FOUR PARTY RURAL PHONE SERVICE Many Advantages Noted If Change - Occurs Locally Illinois Bell has proposed to the Illinois Commerce Commission an optional four-party service for rural area customers in about 170 of its Illinois exchanges, including McHenry. according to R. C. Zahn. telephone manager for this area. The new servjee would be offered onlv in those exchanges where eight-party rural service also will be available. "Many customers have asked that a higher quality service for people in rural areas be offered," Zahn said. "We are going ahead with our plans to offer it, ev.?n though Ave knowthat it will take some time to> provide the additional equipment required. The time needed will vary depending on the availability of equipment, and there may be delays in some cases." Only One Ring The new rural service will only contemplate four parties on the line, instead of eight, said Zahn. Also, each customer will hear only his own ring instead of hearing at least the ring" for one other party on his line in addition to his own. o If the company's proposal is anproved. basic monthly charges for the new four party rural service in McHenry would be 53.75 for residence and $7.25 for business customers who 1 live within one mile of the base rate area. (This is the more densely populated area of an exchange within which urbantype service is provided without a mileage charge.) Fourparty rural service customers living between cne and three miles from the base rate area would pay $1 a month more; and ' customers living over three miles away would pay $1.50 a month more. Present eight party rural service would continue to be offered, said Zahn, with no change in the monthly charge tor this service.
