Phone EV 5-j Harvard and Gale Kihde ol Lost and Found other things remain unchanged. But the market for soybeans has changed rapidly, and will likely change more in the future. The production of soybeans in the United States increased from 90 million bushels in 1939 to 234 million in 1959 and to 579 million in 1958. (Output dropped back to 538 million in 1959.) The increase in production o v e r t h e 2 0 - y e a r p e r i o d amounted to more than 500 percent. If the volume of production had controlled price over this period,.such a huge increase in output surely would have depressefT^price almost to zero. Instead, the price of soybeans is around $2.00 or better, which is about 15 cents above the price support level. And there are no surplus stocks of soybeans. Perhaps a review of the markets for soybeans and soybean products will help to explain why prices have held up so well under rapidly increasing production. Soybean production in the United States has totaled 1,600 million bushels over the pas£ three years. Of this amount about 95 million bushels, or 6 i percent, have been (or will be) • used for seed. ] Domestic processings for the three years ending next September will be about 1,200 million bushels in all, or 75 percent of total production. Produced from this amount of beans were, roughly, 12.7 billion pounds of oil and 30 million tons of soybean meal. About one-fifth of the oil was exported, partly under .special gQYewmwt., export id programs. This oil sells in competition with large amounts ol other fats and oils in world markets, so there is little chance to raise the price very much by reducing sales. About one-seventh of the soybean meal also was export' ed and sold in competition with many other feeds from all over the world. Consequently we would probably have little success in raising prices of our meal by restricting our sales. From the past three corps ol* soybeans, exports are taking some 320 million bushels, or more than one-fourth as many as are crushed in the United States. These beans are sold in highly competitive markets from Japan to Israel. Beans must compete in these foreign markets wilh many other sources of protein feeds and with many other edible oils and fats. We probably could gain some temporary price increases by reducing sales. But this would stimulate production of competitive products in other areas to take over the markets we now have. The increased production in the other countries would gradually reduce the demand for our soybeans. Thus it seems rather doubtful that we can gain any permanent advantage by reducing the production of soybeans. L. H. Simerl Department of Agricultural Economics 5379. SHOP AT HOME Union.
