Toot THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER fp^ Thursday May 12*1960 €<udt U/aJLtJi. "SO I HEAR" ' Had a nice chat with Coach Gubbins, who is in charge of basketball at Marian High, and found him very enthusiastic {ibout having the famous De- Paul coach, Ray Meyer, as speaker for the banquet next Sunday night. May 15. We find it hard to believe that Ray has been coaching at DePaul since 1942. but the records say it's so. He has been named, coach' of the year on four different occasions and has always had.winning ways. When Ray was the captain of Notre Dame teams in '37 and f38, their record was 40 won and 6 lost. That's real good! MIKE CREIGHTON SETS HIGH JUMP MARK IN STATE Mile Relay Team Unbeaten In Dual Meet Competition : Zion- Benton saw some fine jumping last week when Mike Creighton set a new high mark in the state of 6' 3 V for the high jump. Coach Gubbins will be listening. He has work ahead. Creighton whose best time is 3:41.6. The weather has thrown sports schedules for a loop, but the list shows McHenry at Dundee, Crystal Lake at Johnsburg, Algonquin at Richmond and Elgin Arrows at Harvard next Sunday in the county league. The Shamrocks will carry a winning spirit into the game with Dundee. These fellows plan on a winning season. The game at Johnsburg may prove something as to the top strength in the league. The Tigers like to win and usually do. Crystal Lake has been a snappy ball club and has some added strength this year. That game should be a battle. Our high school schedule shows the track team going to Crystal Lake today and Dundee's baseball team coming to McHenry. On Friday the district golf tournament will be an all day event.. The same goes for track on Saturday. t>eKaIb Relays Rain, sleer, and mud were the setting for the DeKalb Relays last Saturday. Twenty teams, including McHenry, participated in the all-day meet. A first was won by Mike Creighton in the high jump, with the height of 6'. Tom Creighton, Roger Zahn, Mike Creighton, and Jim Hanson took second p^ace in the 2- mile medley relay. In the mile, Ron Thoma von fourth. We finished with a total of 19 points, which lunded us seventh place. Our Fresh-Srph 440 Yd. relay team of Chuck Miller, Pat Faunt. Wayne Fuchs, and Ron Freund took a fourth place. WARRIOR NINE WINS FROM BARRINGTON AND ZION-BENTON By Louis Felicetti After our comments on afternoon sports events last week,-«l>fivi Hsimrars reminded us that the county track meet Vill be, held in McHenry, Wednesday, May 25 under lights, ^fratch that one. Let's hope there will be a let-up soon on this wintry type weather, as it not only delays tournament play, but also hurts our daily fee revenue which we need so badly to help pay for the recent additions to our clubhouse. I call Don Wattles every Monday to get the previous day's results for this column, and when he advised me there had been no play on Sunday, it left me high and dry for something to write about. During the week of^May 1 three matches whiclr had been postponed by the participants were played off with these results: Overtort beat Jackson; Buss beat Bennett; Dahl beat Bruns. It is my understanding that the greens committee has ruled against any further delayed matches such as those above. They felt that all players in a tourney should compete on the same day, namely Sunday. Any violations of this rule will be eliminated from the tournament. That's it for this week. Anonymous |Lake Region Sports ! Car Club now working on dust control to make your viewing our race as dust free as possible. Also we are improving our sanitary facilities. These improvements will be in effect starting with our first race. Our first scrambles will be a benefit for the Mental Health Center for McHenry County. The race will be held on May 22, at Raven's Farm, 3 miles south of the new bridge at highway 120 or 3 miles north of 176 on the Griswold Lake blacktop. Tickets may be obtained from any Fox Valley Rider or from the Mental Health Center, which is located next to the Clinic parking lot and across from McHenry Community High School, on East Waukegan street. If you f\*£puld like any additional inforrrfettion you can ask Mr. Blumberg or any of the staff at the Mental Health Center. We feel that the support of the Mental Health Center is the most important project facing the people of McHenry County. This project is also important to people of surrounding counties, as it will relieve to some extent the overload of their facilities for Mental Health. Humanity has made great strides in conquering diseases of the body and now must stride toward the conquest of mental illness. At present Mental Health facilities in our County are proportionately small, but they are a start. L.„to R.: Ray BrysSn, Vernon Freund, Wally Hojnacki,' Ed Peis^rt, Earl Koch, Herman Kreutz'er.
