Politicians In the early days of his power, he is full of smiles, and he salutes everyone whom he meets. -PLATO (428-348 B.C.) Greek philosopher The aim of every political constitution ought to be: first to obtain for rulers men who possess most wisdom to discern and most virtue to pursue the common good of the society -- and in the next place to take the most effectual precautions for keeping them virtuous whilst they continue to hold their public trust. --ALEXANDER HAMILTON or JAMES MADISON (authorship uncertain) A politician ... one that would circumvent God. -WILLIAM SHAKESPEABB (1564-1616) English playwright If we withdraw the confidence «• placed In these our present statesmen, and transfer it To those whom we mistrusted heretofore, This seems I think our fairest chance for safety: If with our present counsellors we fail. Then with their opposites we might succeed. -ARISTOPHANES (445-380 B.C.) Greek playwright NO JAILS THEN: The Code of Hammurabi (2100 B.C.) provided 5 methods of punishment: 1) fine, 2) death by whipping, 3) death by crucifixion, 4) death by fire, and 5) death by drowning. Huge upright stones (megaliths) have been found in China, France, Abyssinia. Britain, Java, Balearics, and India. Reason?? Nobody knows, but they likely had some religious significance. The collection, which was featured at the Art Institute of Chicago earlier this spring, is expected to be an excellent complement to the exhibit of works by McHenry county artists. The Fair this year is scheduled fcr June 24, 25, 26 at the McHenry Junior high school. The Sosaku Hange collection will be assembled by Oliver Stabler of Huntley, who with Ja rnles Michener is considered one of Jjje two outstanding authorities on the modern Japanese print. Mr. Oliver Statler has written a book "Modern Japanese Prints" and has an extensive collection of this type of art. Sosaku Hanga, according to Mr. Statjer, has overthrown the tiresome monotony of earlier Japanese woodblock prints, has absorbed some of the European originality and forms, but has retained characteristics which reveal its deeply oriental flavor. The Fair committee feels very fortunate to be ?ible to present a show of this quality for its viewers especially at a time when things oriental have captured the interest of the American public in general. The Art Fair is sponsored by the woman's auxiliary to Mc- ED'S RENTAL RENTS Chain Saws to Sanders EVergreen 5-4123 Henry hospital. Each year in addition to an outstanding exhibit by local artists, the committee have secured excellent loan shows to heighten interest for both artists in the area and for the less arty viewer. Past loan shows have included exhibits by Fairweather- Harden, Charles Feingarten and Exhibit A galleries. t DRIVING AND THE LAW In a discussion of law and the legal profession delivered at Jthe homecoming and initiation banquet of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. Gov. William G. Stratton said, "Bad or deliberately careless driving has the same moral irresponsibility as firing a shotgun down a crowded sidewalk." The governor commented on the success to date of Illinois' traffic safety campaign, which has "Resulted in a reduction in traffic fatalities four con s ? e u t i v e years. "But," he said, "until bad driving becqmes a moral wrong, until the public feels, find knows that driving while drunk, or driving against the rules is immoral, as well as being against the rules, we cannot come to the ultimate solution of safety."
