Van Der Veen, McHenry county rabies control officer, urges all dog owners who havt<#not had their animals vaccinated to do so immediately. Dr. Van Der Veen says that unvaccinated pets bring the rabies hazard just that much closer to home. Animal owners have an obligation not only to protect their pets and livestock, they have an obligation to protect themselves, theiR families and their neighbor. One case of rabies is too much, says Dr. Van Der Veen. This is a horrible disease. And, what most people don't seem to realize is that children are most likely to be bitten by a rabied dog. Several public health veterinarians in the east have made a study of circumstances surrounding dog bites. According to Dr. Van J>er Veen, this study revealed 0iat almost 50 percent of those suffering dog bites were Cinder 9 years of age. This indicates that when a dog is disposed to bite, as when it has rabies, the chances" are 50/50 that it will bite a youngster. There is no cure for rabies once signs of the disease appear, says Dr. Van Der Veen. Howe\;er, the Pasteur t^toatment is usually effectiw if started immediately after a person is bitten by a rabid animal. He adds, the best way to handle rabies is to prevent it. The best way to prevent rabies is to have pets vaccinated. PROFEKlOHPL DIRECTORY DR. JOHN C. GOETSCHEL.
