A Thought For Summer With Memorial Day behind us, one certainty is that we have officially started the vacation, season, even though schools will be in session for a few more days. It is a time when we in the newspaper business are particularly happy to record the leisure time activities of our readers as well as the more important events of a bustling community. All of this reminds us of a question so often asked --sometimes seriously and sometimes in jest--on what it takes to get one's name in the paper. Well, it may be a number of things, but the surest occurences which merit mention are births, marriages and deaths. The firs,t is obviously out of the question, and the second is a little drastic unless there is a better reason than seeing one's name in print. The third is sure-fire, but it's a story YOU will never read and seems a big price to pay for a few lines of type . . . especially when it is many times unnecessary. There is no need for ten easy lessons to rate this latter column. Many "make it" every day, all because a good number of folks feel it isn't necessary to exercise a normal amount of care in their daily living. One easy way to be the subject of a story you'll never read is to use the same amount of thinking behind the wheel of a high-powered new car that you did behind the wheel of that three-wheel bike when you were a kid-- especially in traffic. Hang up a collection of souvenir items on the dash boards and in the back window to obscure the view. Make up your mind that "it's the early bird that gets the worm" and drive accordingly, even though there is no particular place to go and no hurry to get there. If a safe speed of 45 is indicated for the curve ahead, show the experts you're better than the average driver and round it at 60. Ignore the lines indicating it's unsafe to pass. They're for the other fellow. Besides, meeting a car head-on on the crest of a hill is a thrill the passengers won't get every day, especially the extra trip through the windshield after the crash. There's no end of the things you can do to get your name in the paper. Carelessness is as sure as anything, and it doesn't apply only to the driver, although statistics prove he makes it more often than anyone else. It's only fair to mention that there are many other ways of getting your name in the paper -- ways we like much better. Call us any time. We like the news you are able to give us yourself, not the kind someone else presents us as a statistic. \
