Pete is a grand old man who has stayed young. McHenry lost some good, young athletes when the Gates family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia. However, . we learn that the boys caught on right away in their new location. John and Bob are playing in the Connie Mack League. Tommy made the Babe Ruth League and like his brothers, is playing regularly. A little note says thank you to the men who gave them early training in McHenry. Ron Smith gives you a good account this week of the Johnsburg Tigers recent games covering the state tournament. A little more pitching in that third game might have carried the boys all the way. on Mike Pitzen's two run singly with two out in the last of 1 the sixth. Art Jackson's boys gained the finals'by beating Fox Lake Friday in . a slugfest 11-9. Ken Frost was the. winning pitcher but needed relief help from Ron Parks. It wasn't a pitch- | er's day. however, as six homers sailed out of the park. Fox Lake jumped off to a four run lead in the first inning but three home runs led to a seven run second inning and McHenry was ahead to j stay. Paul Adams paced the assault with two home runs and ^ <2\vol 2)J&' Jean Weyland Dennis Jackson also homered. The championship game was a real pitchers' battle. McHenry led only once in the game and that was at the end of the game. Both communities can be proud of their teams as this was a real "major league type" ball game. It is not hard to take a win, but to have victory snatched from your grasp is another thing. NOW The Johnsburg Tigers were defeated by Dolton's Cavallinis 14-5 in the semi-final state I tournament game at Elgin. The J Tigers came up with more than ! their share of hits, but couldn't icome through with enough pitching or - defense in this game to win. Joe Frett's men stroked out 12 hits (including three doubles), but the men from Dalton pounded Johnsburg pitching for 14 hits to top this figure. It is impossible to attempt to alibi such a "lopsided defeat", but it is also a fact that Jim Steffens who started on the mound for the Tigers developed a sore arm in" the second inning which forced Manager Frett to bring in'Eddie Mack who had already pitched two complete games in the tournament. As a result of inadequate rest. Mack came up with a sore arm also forcing him to leave the game. Thereafter Dick Driafz served a turn, and finally Ted Schaefer finished up with the only creditable performance of Tiger pitchers all night. Lloyd Freund led the Johnsburg attack with three singles while Dick Hiller had two doubles to help the cause. The Tigers scored in the first, third, and fifth. Larry Knutson's double drove in the first run in the opening inning. In the third, Dick . John Knox tells us the Shamrocks will play a double-header here next Sunday starting at 1 o'clock. Harvard will be the first opponent, followed by Dundee. John has hopes of his team--gaining a spot in the county league play-offs. tor? The diet has started. Vacation has not. Your tee times and threesomes will remain the same. There will be this variation. You will be playing the first round of Medal Play and your scores will determine your Flight. All clear? Congratulations, to Alice Marion who beat Lu Funk and won the first Flight of Match Play Tournament. The Championship Flight match of that tournament has been postponed until a later date. Winners in the Husband- Wife Tournament which ended last Friday were Betty and Jack Moss. They were far ahead of the Field. Closer comfielder's choice accounted for two more runs. The Tigers repeated this exact pattern in the fifth tp* conclude their scoring for the night. Hitting star for Dolton was Desousa, the first baseman, who had two home runs, both well hit over the left- center field fence. Dolton combined timely hitting with some erratic fielding plays by the Tigers to account for their heavy scoring. Incidentally, • Dolton went on to win the state championship over Chicago's Vets by a score of 8-2. The loss can be blamed on almost everything except hitting. This was the only bad game the Johnsburg team played in the entire tournament as they went on to take third place as explained petition put Joan and Ed Buss i in another column. We always did think a World Series between Milwaukee and the White Sox would be a humdinger. Now. the Republicans are having their innings and we hear the other side. Sometimes one gets confused, but. fences were not made to sit on. Joe Frett is getting his Tig- 1 fifth. We can be very proud of our course, because it plays a good strong 71. even for the guys who earn their living at the game. Many times, when the pros "invade" some local club, they make the par figures look sick by coming in with 64's and 65's. This wasn't the case at our club where very few of the pros managed to get around in regulation figures. We're all looking forward to having these Pidtabee Clul by Chris Nelsen V The Thursday cub boat race was won by Henry and Fran DeYoung, with Danny Arkema and Woody Stamer following in second. Normally a performance like that would have produced a net score of at least 10 under and picked up all the marbles. Tough luck, Henry. Fourth round competition for the Past President's Trophy was played last Sunday with these results: Gene Saylor beat Vale Adams and Frank Johnson beat John Betjeman. Next Sunday, July 31, will find Sayler and Johnson battling it out for the top honor. Good luck to both of you fellows. Sunday, July 31, will also be the start of the club championship, which is four rounds of medal pk*y. Of course, this tournament will be played "scratch". There will also be the first round of competition for the mixed A and B club tourney wherein all players use 110 per cent of their posted handicaps.. Sounds like a lot of fun for the next few weeks.
